History of Durgapuja in Autumn or Akal bodhan:

The worship of Devi Durga in the month of Ashwin is called ‘Akalbodhan‘- an uncustomary time for commencement of the

worship. It is so called since the period of this worship differs from the conventional period (During the spring – ‘Basanta’).

Ramayana says that when Rama was engaged in the fierce battle.with Ravana, he wanted to secure the blessings of victory

from Devi Durga. He held the puja to evoke the goddess during autumn to his dire plight, thereby worshiping Durga Untimely (In

Akal). Hence this puja is called Akalbodhon.Pleased with his devotion Durga blessed him. The battle started on Shaptami and

Ravana was killed at the Shandhikshan (In between) Ashtami and Navami; he was cremated on Dashami. Therefore, the four

days of the puja that we celebrate ends in the triumph of the good over evil.

Divine weapons of Ma Durga: Trishul- The trident of Lord Shiva is the main weapon of Maa Duga which she uses to slay the demons. It symbolizes the three gunas – Sattva,

Rajas and Tamas. Sudarshan Chakra – This is another important weapon that Durga holds in one of her hands. It signifies the power over universe. The

chakra was given by Lord Vishnu.

Conch shell or Shankha – This conch shell was gifted to Maa Durga by Lord Varuna. It is the symbol of the sacred sound of ‘Om’, which is the most primitive sound in the Universe. It resembles Maa Shakti’s role as the energy behind creation.

Bow and Arrow- The bow and arrows held by the Goddess symbolize both potential (bow) and kinetic (arrow) energies. It points to the fact that Maa Durga is in control of all energies in the Universe. The bow was given by Vayu and arrow by Surya.

Thunderbolt- The thunderbolt gifted by Lord Indra is another item Maa Durga holds in her hands. Thunder is a symbol of rage and anger and these qualities are a part of Maa Durga, who destroys evil ruthlessly.

Sword – Maa Durga also carries a sword in her hand The sharp blade of this sword signifies divine knowledge that shines through all the darkness.

Lion- Was given by Himalayas Faming Dirt- Given by Lord Agni. Half bloomed Lotus- The lotus in half bloom in the hand of Goddess Durga symbolises that though success is certain, yet it is not final. It also

symbolises that as the lotus grows amidst mud, human mind also has to continuously evolve spiritually Abhaya Mudra- The Goddess' one hand is always in mode of blessing her devotees or 'Abhaya Mudra'. It signifies that the Goddess would

always keep Her devotees free from fear.
