megha-vāhana-garva-bhitO greatly powerful Kṛṣṇa, for seven days You held up Govardhana, the king of the mountains, as if it were an umbrella and Your arm were its handle. In this way You dissipated the pride of him who rides on the clouds (Indra). (242)

mahā-varṣa-nivāraṇa Staying under Govardhana Hill for seven days, You dispelled the hunger and thirst of Vrajavāsīs with Your glance. You foiled Indra’s intention and forced the great rain to stop. O Kṛṣṇa, all glories unto You. (243)

gopānupṛṣṭa-janaka gopodgītākhilehitaO Kṛṣṇa, all glories unto You. Seeing Your extraordinary and great activities, the amazed cowherd men of Vraja wondered (about Your actual identity). They enquired about this from Your father and he replied by celebrating all of Your pastimes. (245)

It is also mentioned in AgastyaSaṁhitā:

“O great ascetic! Here the cause of the purification of the nose is said to be the smelling of fragrant flowers etc offered to the Infinite Lord.”

śrījīvaḥ: arcitasyānantasya bhagavataḥ sambandhī yo gandhapuṣpādis tasyāghrāṇaṁ ghrāṇendriyasya iha jagati viśuddhis taddhetuḥ syād ity abhidhīyata iti ||164||

Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī: Here, in this world, the cause of the purification of the smelling organ is said to be smelling of fragrant flowers etc related to the worshipped infinite Bhagavān. 40. atha śrī-mūrteḥ sparśa-

naṁ, yathā viṣṇu-dharmottare—spṛsṭvā viṣṇor adhiṣṭhānaṁ pavitraḥ śraddhayānvitaḥ |pāpa-bandhair vinirmuktaḥ sarvān kāmān avāpnuyāt ||

“The pure and faithful person who touches the Deity of Viṣṇu becomes freed from the bondage of sin and attains all desires.”

śrījīvaḥ: atha śrīmadarcāmātrasya sparśādhikāriṇāṁ sparśamāhātmyam āha—spṛṣṭveti ||165||

Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī: This is a glorification of touching the Deity for those who are qualified for it.

na te yama-puraṁ yānti yānti puṇya-

(41) Seeing the

Deity, as des

cribed in Varāha

Purāṇa:

"O Earth! Those who see Śrī Govinda

deva in Vṛndāvana do not go to the city of Yama, but achieve the goal of

pious persons."

śrījīvaḥ: atha sarvān prati darśanamāhātmyaṁ ca sarvāsām arcānāṁ vadan bhaktyāveśaviśeṣād upary upari parisphūrtyā śrīmadarcāviśeṣāyamānasya sākṣādbhagavataḥ śrīgovindadevasya darśane māhātmyaviśeṣam āha—vṛndāvana iti | yānti puṇyakṛtāṁ gatim iti sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje [bhā.pu. 1.2.6] iti nyāyena suvicāravatāṁ sarvasatkarmaṇām ekāntagatiṁ bhaktyākhyaparamapuruṣārthasiddhim āpnuvantīty arthaḥ ||166||Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī: After speaking to all people about the glories of seeing all forms of Deities, the author, by becoming absorbed in bhakti,

receives more and more visions, and thus particularly glorifies seeing Śrī Govindadeva, Who is directly Bhagavān, the special form of the Deity.

As it was expressed in ŚB 1.2.6, the best dharma for the human being is that from which bhakti originates.

Therefore, “they achieve the goal of pious persons” means:

"they achieve the only goal of the persons who think profoundly and perform all good actions.

This goal is called bhakti, the supreme objective of human life."

42. ārātrika-darśanaṁ, yathā skānde—koṭayo brahma-hatyānām agamyāgama-koṭayaḥ |dahaty āloka-mātreṇa

viṣṇoḥ sārātrikaṁ mukham ||BRS 1.2.167

(42) Seeing the āratī ceremony, festivals, etc

Seeing the āratī ceremony is described in SkandaPurāṇa:

“Seeing the face of Viṣṇu lit by the light from the āratī lamp burns up millions of sins commited by killing brāhmaṇas and engaging in illicit sexual activities.”

śrījīvaḥ: punaḥ śrīmadarcāmātrārātrikadarśanaphalam āha—koṭayaḥ koṭīr iti | mukhaṁ kartṛ ||167||

Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī: This verse speaks about the result of seeing the āratī ceremony of all forms of Śrī Viṣṇu. Koṭayaḥ is an alternative expression to koṭīḥ. Mukham is the subject of the sentence.

utsava-darśanaṁ, yathā bhaviṣyottare—ratha-sthaṁ ye nirīkṣante kautukenāpi keśavam |devatānāṁ gaṇāḥ sarve bhavanti śvapacādayaḥ ||

BRS 1.2.168 Seeing festivals, as described in BhaviṣyottaraPurāṇa:

“The dogeaters and other low persons who see Keśava on His chariot, even if it

is only out of curiosity or for amusement, all become devatās.”

śrījīvaḥ: rathastham ity utsavāntaropalakṣaṇaṁ, sarve śvapacādayo’pi | devatānāṁ pārṣadānām ||168||

Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī: The chariot festival (rathayātrā) represents here all other festivals as well.

All those who see Śrī Hari on the chariot, even if they are cāṇḍālas or other lowclass persons, become devatās, i.e. associates of Śrī Viṣṇu.

The expression “etc” (Seeing the āratī ceremony, festivals, etc) refers to seeing a pūjā, as illustrated in AgniPurāṇa:

"He who sees the Lord with devotion, faith and joy, after He is worshipped or while He is being worshipped, also attains the fruit of yoga".

BHAKTISANDARBHA:PREFACE 34

published by New Śrī Haridās Nivās, SpainA334: even by doing bhajana of Śrī Kṛṣṇa through fear one attains liberation, so even fear (in connection with Kṛṣṇa) cannot be useless – Kaṁsa is an example of that;

thus for devotees like Uddhava, Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the best choice both in their practising as well as perfect stage;

this was confirmed by Kṛṣṇa when He explained to Uddhava (ŚB 11.29.33) that by attaining Him, he will attain the results of the four goals of human life:

jñāne karmaṇi yoge ca vārtāyāṁ daṇḍa-dhāraṇeyāvān artho nṛṇāṁ tāta tāvāṁs te ’haṁ

catur-vidhaḥ“Dear Uddhava! Whatever of the four goals of human life is sought by people through jñāna, karma, yoga, mundane business and political rule, You can achieve all of them by being My devotee.”

issue 72, page 8 mRrekHkfDrlq/kkygjh

A335: also Śrī Uddhava prayed for eternal and undeviating bhāvabhakti at the feet of Kṛṣṇa (ŚB 11.29.40)

A336: servitude to Śrī Kṛṣṇa is indeed the goal of human life

A337: the greatness of ŚrīKṛṣṇabhajana related to the līlās in Śrī Gokula is unsurpassed because Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pure and supreme nature, characterized by giving the reward that is deserved by a real wetnurse even to His enemies such as Pūtanā, is not manifest in other avatāras (ŚB 3.2.27)
