Grant Writing & Program Design Projects

Since 2013, while consulting to grassroots’ nonprofits in the Central District, I have brought them

grant-awards totaling: $207, 209.00.

In addition to the technical grant writing skills that I brought them, I played a major role in helping

them to conceptualize the design of their programs and projects. My career experiences in program

design and evaluation, etcetera, helped me to increase their grant application’s competitiveness.

Central Area Senior Center

I. Since the fall of 2014, I played a leading role in bringing to the Central

Area Senior Center (CASC) local grants totaling $103,954.00. The

CASC is an affiliated program of Senior Services, one of Washington

State’s largest providers’ of services and programs for the elderly in King

County. Working with the director, my grant writing consultancies are as

follows:

II. Co-wrote an application to the Department of Neighborhoods for a Small

Project Grant. This included the conceptualization and design of: Memory

Lane: A Seniors Digital Story 1920—WWII. The project was designed to

create a video film documentary that captures the oral stories by a diversity

of multicultural seniors who grew up in Seattle’s Central Area

neighborhoods—during prohibition, the Great Depression, New Deal, and

World War Two. The project award totaled: $24, 500.

III. Co-wrote an application to the Department of Neighborhoods for a Large

Project Grant. The grant was to conduct a feasibility study to identify and

prioritize options for future redevelopment of the center. This will require

surveying, architecture, parking and traffic analysis, engineering, and

community engagement. Grant total award $49,454.

IV. Co-wrote an application to 4 Culture Building for Culture, a King County

grant making initiative. The award funded was for the renovation of the

Green Dolphin Entertainment Center for seniors. The Grant total award

$27,500.

V. Co-wrote an application to Seattle’s Department of Aging and Disability

Services (ADS) for a technology upgrade grant. The grant was used to

purchase computer and project equipment for the computer. The Grant

total award $2,500

Multimedia Resources and Training Institute Winter 2012-Current

Since 2012, working with the Multimedia Resources and Training Institute, my

responsibilities included writing grants to support after-school program training in

multimedia technologies for underserved at-risk immigrant refugee and other minority

youth. As of November 2015, I have successfully brought MMRTI a combination of

grant awards totaling $98,255.00 for the following:

I. 2015: 4 Culture grant. Worked with the Executive Director and designed

a project titled: “Generations through the Lens,” an after-school training

project for at-risk youth to capture the stories as told through the lens of

first, second, and third generations of East Africans in the Pacific

Northwest. The Grant total award $10,000.

II. 2015: City of Seattle Civil Rights Department: Race and Social Justice

Initiative Three Town Hall Panels to Address: 1) Crime and Public

Safety; 2) Housing; and 3) Equal Employment Opportunities

Commission. The Grant total award $5,000.

III. 2015: City of Seattle: Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative.

Worked with the executive director and designed a project for funding

titled: “The Joy of Soccer, a Documentary about the Seattle Sounders and

Fans”. The project was designed for 10 at-risk youth in the Seattle Youth

Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI) to have a summer experience

learning how to use multimedia technology equipment to document a

story about the Seattle Sounders FC2. This included contacting and

partnering with the Sounders organization and the Seattle Public Library

Douglas Truth branch in the Central District. The Grant total award

$21,791.

IV. 2014: The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, University of

Washington. The grant will be used to set up a One Stop Online Health

Care Directory for East African Immigrants in King County The Grant total award $10,000.

V. 2014: City of Seattle Neighborhood Matching Fund Small Project:

“Sense of Place First Ethiopian Summer Festival in the Central

District: The Grant total award $22,464 (total includes private gift

donation of $250.

VI. 2013: Seattle Arts and Culture Work Readiness Project The Seattle

Seahawks: A Video Documentary. Worked with the Executive Director

and designed a project that allowed 15 at risk youth to have a summer

after-school experience learning multimedia technology. The project was

a video documentary about the Seattle Seahawks. This required

partnering with the Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Central Public Library, and

Sports Illustrated in New York City N.Y. The film was shown on

Saturday, November 23, 2013 in the Microsoft Auditorium a public event.

The Grant total award $24,000.

program on behalf of G.A.M.E., Inc. The grant was use to expand their after-

school project by setting up a multimedia digital training component. The

grant was awarded the maximum $5,000.

Federal Level

1) Consultant to Write 1993 First Million Dollar HUD Federal Grant

YouthBuild Pittsburgh, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA

Hired to write a Department of Housing and Urban Development request

for proposal grant under the Community Development Act of 1992

“Hope for Youth—YouthBuild.” The purpose of the grant was to train

thirty economically disadvantaged youth in the housing construction

trades, while they receive remedial education for their General

Equivalency Diploma (GED). In a public announcement July 5, 1994,

Henry Cisneros, Secretary of HUD, and Harris Wofford, Senator, (D-

PA), announced that YouthBuild Pittsburgh was the only Pennsylvanian

affiliate to receive the full $1 million grant.

November 1993

2) Consultant to Write 1995 Second Million Dollar HUD Federal Grant

YouthBuild Pittsburgh, Inc., Pittsburgh, PA

Hire to write the second YouthBuild HUD proposal to train an additional

thirty youth. This proposal included an evaluation plan of my own

design based upon the principles of a Pert chart (Program Evaluation

Review Technique). The goal was to provide YouthBuild Pittsburgh a

tool to better monitor program events and activities and to allow

immediate feedback of program results. As a result, YouthBuild

Pittsburgh received the second HUD $1 million grant in June 1995.

This totaled $2 million in two consecutive fiscal awards.

During early fall, I wrote a preliminary grant to the U. S. Department of

Commerce Economic Development Administration. It included research that

supported the need to build “Harbor Gardens Greenhouse,” an innovation in

economic development and training of low-income and unemployed-displaced

workers. Bidwell Training Center was awarded a matching fund grant totaling

$1.8 million.

Researched funding support for internal training of medical staff and physicians in

informatics technology and wrote the grant application for the UPMC Medical

Center’s Information Services Division. The state economic development grant

totaling $250,000. Also develop a template-training manual to help IT

professionals’ cross-train IT professionals using clinical software programs.

exemption status; wrote a Technology Matching Fund Grant to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods;

and facilitated a presentation to the Board of Directors during their retreat.

Multimedia Resources and Training Institute Seattle, WA 98144 Winter 2012—2015

Social Media Instructor and Strategic Planning Consultant

Hired in the winter of 2012 to teach a group of residential East African immigrants’ the basic fundamentals

of online social media networks for best optimal use including marketing and advertising. In the summer of

2012, I received another contract to do an organizational strategic plan that included an audit of the

organization’s operating capacity and assessment of its program performance. The findings of this six

month research uncovered many impacts in the underserved refugee immigrant youth and adults in Seattle

and King County.

Young Urban Authors, Seattle, Washington Spring 2011-Fall 2014

Program Development Consultant

Hired to conduct a program profile and assessment of Young Urban Authors, a program funded as part of

Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative. The findings showed that the program had a major impact in

the behaviors of fifteen youth who achieved a goal to become published authors by attending a series of

book writing workshops. Their books are currently sold on Amazon.Com.

Community Outreach Consultant Set up a special recruitment project for non-traditional students. They were defined as staff members of

nonprofit and government organizations; and the unemployed homeless. The project was innovative

because it required faculty members leave the sanctuary of the university and visit local city homeless

shelters, half-way houses, and a major state correctional facility to discuss college degreed programs. The

project lasted for approximately 90 days and netted the recruitment of several nontraditional students. Also,

it was written about in Bloomberg Business Week magazine in May 5, 2010.

The Call & Post

Researched archived documents and microfilm editions of the Call and Post newspaper from 1916-2000.

The Call and Post is Ohio’s oldest and largest African American free press founded in 1920 by

inventor/publisher Garrett Morgan. The research goal was to uncover historical evidence of the history,

origins, and more that could be used to help celebrate the newspaper’s 90th

anniversary. The findings led to

the Call and Post being digitalized as an online African American historical newspaper. The digitalization

was in a partnership with Pro Quest, a company that digitalizes newspapers and other documents for online

databases. The database of Call and Post archived collections are on websites of the Cleveland Public

Library and other libraries throughout the United States.

Researched and authored a three part series on the growing presence and problems involving persons with

mental health problems in the downtown areas of the Cleveland business district. This special research

project involved nearly twenty hours of interviews with top mental health policy makers, managers of

mental health and homeless shelters, former public safety director, a municipal judge, and onsite interviews

with clients of a demonstration public housing project for persons with mental health problems. The article

was used as part of a fundraising campaign package to support a demonstration housing project for persons

with mental disabilities.

Planning & Program Development Consultant June 2005—January 2007

Researched the feasibility for setting up the “Harbor Light Food Service Employment & Job Training

Program: Targeting Employment & Job Training Unmet Needs of Ex-Offenders.” The research included

an examination of “best practices” in job training programs that target at-risk groups. D C Central Kitchen,

in Washington, D.C., was examined for its success at job training substance abusers, ex-offenders, and the

homeless. Thus, I organized a delegation from Ohio to visit DC Central Kitchen. Our three day fact-

finding visit received special recognition on Capitol Hill by (the late) Congresswoman, Stephanie Tubbs

Jones; 21st Congressional District, Ohio.

Youth Opportunities Unlimited Winter 2009-Summer 2010

Program Design & Development Consultant Designed a demonstration pilot summer youth employment program for low-income high school-age youth.

The goal was to teach them the principles of starting a small entrepreneurial retail business while they

received hands-on training making custom-ordered and designer T-Shirts for sale. Designed three training

manuals: 1) Small business retail training manual; 2) T-Shirt production training manual using digital

campers, computers, and a 200 lbs. heat press; and 3) Safety policy manual for operating equipment and

rules for appropriate behavior. Evaluation results show that the project was a huge success with the

potential to be a self-sustaining fundraiser to support youth programs.

Hire to work on the JOBNET (Joint Oakland Based Neighborhood Employment Team) demonstration

project that introduces neighborhood residents to free computer access—in public libraries—with

employment services; recruited employers and clients to participate in the new pilot project that led to

hiring JOBNET clients. An evaluation of the JOBNET project was my Master's thesis, in which library

administrators used all recommendations to help secure future funding totaling $150,000.

Evaluation of the “Cleveland: Now”

Awarded permission to do a program evaluation of a popular city economic development project

“Cleveland: Now” of the late 1960s. Permission was granted by the first African American Mayor of a

major metropolitan city The Honorable Carl B. Stokes, Cleveland Municipal Court and Former Mayor of

Cleveland. The project involve data collection and analysis that went back to the days when the Mayor was

in office and launch the program; in addition, I was given special permission to interview Mr. Stokes in his

municipal court office. The project was for: PIA 202C Policy Analysis and Program Evaluation; Graduate

School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, and The Honorable Carl B. Stokes,

Organized a special Podcast author reading event at the Douglas Truth Library, the

first of its kind in its 100 year history. The event open to the public featured a

recording and book signing of Co-Author Dr. Joseph W. Scott reading from his new

book: “Little Ethiopia of the Pacific Northwest.” As part of the event, I mobilized

partnership sponsors that included the Seattle Public Library; Urban Forum

Northwest Talk Radio; City of Seattle Office of Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Seattle Public Library January 2011-May 2011

Organized a special author reading event that was held Wednesday 5/18/2011 at the

Seattle Central Public Library Microsoft Auditorium. The event featured University

of Minnesota’s Assistant Professor Dr. Teresa Gowan, who read from her new book:

“Hobos, Hustlers, and Backsliders: Homeless in San Francisco” (Fall 2010). I

Organized the Dr. Teresa Gowan, May 18th, event in partnership with the Seattle Public

Library and the Seattle King County Coalition on Homelessness. Dr. Gowan presented an

illustrated talk about her five years of field work with homeless men in the most liberal city

in America. She vividly depicts the lives of homeless men in San Francisco in her book

"Hobos, Hustlers, and Backsliders," where she analyzes the influence of the homelessness

Organized the Young Urban Authors, July 8, 2012 author reading Podcast event at the

Seattle Public Library. Here is where teen authors share stories and poetry depicting

teen life, love, emotions and street experiences growing up in the multicultural

Southwest neighborhoods of Seattle. The teens were in the program Seattle Youth

Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI) that funded a new innovative program to train

at-risk youth to become published authors. The event was co-sponsored by

Amazon.com/Create Space and the Seattle Public Library.

Created a matrices tool which records behavioral information during an interview survey for continued

funding of NeighborhLine, an online database of economic and community development, job training,

grants, etc. via state and national mainframes. This copyrighted social research tool, while originally

designed to record levels of defensiveness in a specific population being introduced to the computer,

has wider application in social research: submitted to the Administration of Subsidies and Grants at the

State Library of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA January 31, 1991.

Designed a Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) Chart for the evaluation and

monitoring of the YouthBuild Pittsburgh HUD grant in 1995. Praeger Publications published the PERT

chart in Public Administration: Balancing Power and Accountability; Jerome B. McKinney and

Lawrence C. Howard (1998).
