Objective: To promote Telugu language reading and writing among the second generation

while nurturing their competitive spirit and fostering teamwork.

Program: Registration and Arrangements – Starts at 9:00 AM

Prayer and Opening remarks by DTA President – 9:30 AM

Writing competition for ages 8 to 17 – Starts at 9:45 AM

Vocabulary competition for ages 3, 4 and 5 Starts at 9:45 AM

Vocabulary competition for ages 6 to 9, 10 to 12, and 13 to 17–at 10:30 AM

Poem recitation competition for all ages - at 12:30 PM

Vote of Thanks – 2:00 PM

Cost: $4 per participant in the competition and can be paid at the Venue.

Eligibility: Children between the ages of 3 and 17.

Children born outside US and immigrated within the last 3 years from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may be tested as a separate group.

Groups: All contests are between individuals only. If there are more than 15 contestants in an age group (except for writing contest), the total number of contestants will be divided into smaller groups for a run-off contest among individuals and a total of 8-12 contestants will be selected for the finals. The number of contestants in final competition will depend on the number of run-off groups. Competition eligibility and word lists for age groups are:

Ages 3, 4, and 5: Words from Level 1 and 2

Ages 6 to 9: Words from Level 2 and 3

Ages 10 to 12: Words from Level 2 and 3

Ages 13 to 17 and children of all ages immigrated in the last 3 years: Words from Level 3 and 4

Ages 8 to 17 – Writing Telugu Words and Sentences

All ages - Telugu poetry recital

Format for Vocabulary:

Word Translations (Telugu to English and English to Telugu)

Sentence Constructions (in Telugu using the translated word)

Five rounds with each round having English to Telugu and Telugu to English translations, and sentence construction using the Telugu word

Format for Writing:

Writing 20 Telugu words that are dictated

Writing 10 Sentences that are dictated

Format for Poetry recital:

Each contestant will recite a poem from the list of poems posted on DTA website without mistake.

When all the contestants complete their turn, the first contestant will recite another poem. This continues until only one contestant remains.

General Rules:

Pre-registration is required to participate in the contest.

Register early at the DTA website http://www.detroittelugu.org/

All disputes that arise must be handled professionally and must be notified to a DTA Executive Committee member immediately.

DTA Executive Committee reserves the ultimate authority to rule on all disputes related to the admission criteria.

The DTLC Judges reserve the authority to rule on all disputes related to the competition

Suggestions to improve the quality of the competitions must be submitted in writing to a DTA Executive Committee member or to any DTLC member.

All the contestants and everyone accompanying them must stay silent during the competition proceedings.

Rules for the Vocabulary competition:

Each contestant will be given a word for translation. The contestant must start answering within 15 seconds. Upon correct translation, the contestant can score bonus points by framing a Telugu sentence using the word within 15 seconds following translation. If the contestant who was given the question first could not answer within 15 seconds, the chance ends there and doesn’t go to the next person. Each correct translation scores 1 point. Each sentence framed scores 1 bonus point. No negative points are awarded.

The second question goes to the contestant on the left. The Telugu half of the round is complete when all contestants get a chance to answer a question.

The English half of the round goes exactly as described in the above two steps, except that English words are to be translated into Telugu words and the Telugu sentences constructed must use the translated Telugu word.

The second round starts with the Telugu half followed by the English half from the other end of the contestants and proceeds to the right (anti-clockwise). The next rounds proceed exactly in the same pattern as the first two (i.e. rounds 3 and 5 proceed clockwise and round 4 anti-clockwise).

With each round the difficulty of the words is expected to increase.

At the end of the five rounds, the scores are tallied and First, Second, and Third places are determined from the highest scorers. In case of a tie for any or all three positions, three rounds of

tie-breaking contest will be conducted only to the tied contestants to determine their places.

Each tie-breaking round consists of both the Telugu and English halves as described above.

Rules for the Writing competition:

The proctor will dictate 20 words and contestants have 30 seconds per word to complete writing that word.

Following the word dictation, 10 sentences will be dictated and contestants have 1 minute per sentence to complete writing.

Top 3 winners will be decided based on the score.

If there is a tie, a second round of competition will be conducted if time allows.

Rules for Poetry recital competition:

The contestant has to start recitation of a poem from the list of poems posted on DTA website within 20 seconds without a mistake. Each mistake or a pause of 5-10 seconds during recitation of the poem or if the judge has to help with a word, adds one point. A collection of 10 points during the recital automatically results in the loss of turn.

A pause of more than 10 seconds during recitation or non-completion adds 10 points and results in loss of turn.

When all the contestants complete their turn, the round ends and the first contestant starts the next round by reciting another poem of his/her choice from the list.

This will continue until one contestant remains who will be declared to be in first place.

The second and third places will be determined from the previous two contestants based on the number of poems recited and if that count is equal, on the points.

Contestants are encouraged to memorize all 50 poems posted.
