OF INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC, DANCE & ARTS 2018
Kalavaibhavam | Kaladarpanam | Kalpanaa
Kaladarpanam: The Esplanade ShowsThis year, SIFAS will present a dance production conceived and set to music by a team of professionals under the artistic guidance of noted Indian arts scholar Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao and renowned musician Dr Sriram Parasuram, and choreographed by the Gurus of SIFAS. PRAKRITI VIKRITI, will bring together senior students, alumni, musicians and gurus from SIFAS & India and will be performed at the Esplanade Studio on 17 & 18 March 2018. The Festival’s offering from the Indian shores will showcase the highly accomplished artistes Ranjani-Gayatri, Pt. Sanjeev Abhyankar and Vidushi Kala Ramnath. The Festival will also feature a rare South Indian Guitar Solo by Prasanna.
Kalavaibham: The SIFAS StageThe festival is a presentation of talent, not just from SIFAS, but from all of Singapore’s premiere institutes and freelance performers along with distinguished artistes from India. It is the only Festival which gives our homegrown artistes the well-deserved opportunity to present their talent on a common platform. Kalavaibhavam offers a range of music and dance programmes daily for the 24 days of the Festival with free admission for all. Kalavaibhavam will conclude on April 8th with congregational singing titled “Mummoorthigal Vizha” – a musical tribute to the trinity of Carnatic composers – Tyagaraja, Dikshitar and Syama Sastry.
Kalpanaa: The Visual Arts platformIn another first, the Visual Arts Students of SIFAS will present an art exhibition at SIFAS and the Esplanade during the festival, based on the topic of Nature to complement the dance production. This year SIFAS grounds will create an atmosphere of a Mela with food from different regions, art and craft stalls and demonstrations by the Visual Arts Academy.

PRAKRITI VIKRITI: Nature’s NatureA SIFAS Dance Production
SIFAS proudly presents PRAKRITI VIKRITI, a unique dance production representing the phenomenon of Nature set in a poetical lyric saga. Prakriti, nature, is constituted of the five elements; the pañca bhūta-s; earth, water, fire, wind and cosmos, the basic sources of life in the universe. The dance repertoire explores how nature helps us when it is enjoyed and worshipped and how life on earth suffers when it is destroyed and misused, which is reflected in the title Pra | Vi Kriti, the nurturing and destructive nature of nature.
PRAKRITI VIKRITI is an amalgamation of three Indian Classical Dance forms, Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Kuchipudi, and the choreography is set to poetry from ancient Tamil and Sanskrit literatures as well as lyrics in Hindi and Telugu. Ragas set in both Hindustani and Carnatic styles, depict each season and the production combines dance and music as it invokes and explores nature’s nature.
