History 1Shri Bhadrabahu Swami and

his older brother Varahmihir were scholars in Vedas & Vidyas.

They met Shrut Kevali Yashobhadra Suri & decided to take Diksha and become Jains.

In a short time, they became scholars of scriptures of Jain Religion.

Page 10: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 10

History 2Shri Acharya Yashobhadra Suriji offered

AcharyaPad to Bhadrabhau and appointed him as his successor.

He thought Bhadrabahu wasmore qualified than

his older brother Varahmihir.

Page 11: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 11

History 3This decision irritated and enraged

Varahmihir who ultimately renounced his Diksha (monk-hood) from Jain Sangh and became fortune teller.

His ego was hurt for not receiving AcharyaPad.

Page 12: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 12

History 4When a son was born to the king,

Varahmihir declared that he would live for a hundred years,

but Bhadrabahu declared that he would live for only

seven days, and that he would be killed by a cat.

Page 13: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 13

History 5

On the eighth day the prince died because of a door's anklet falling

on his head which had a picture of cat drawn on it.

Due to this humiliation Varahmihira left the kingdom.

Page 14: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 14

History 6After few years Varahmihira passed away.

He had taken birth as ‘Vyantardeva’(a class of forest dwelling heavenly god).

He came to recall his earlier birth and soon out of jealousy (ego) and

anger, started inflicting pain (Upsarg) to People of the Jain community (Sangh).

Page 15: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 15

History 7He became evil,

started torturing and terrorizing the Jains, especially followers of Bhadrabahu,

by spreading plague amongst the Jain Sangh.

As a result of which, many people began to die suddenly and

losing faith in the Jain religion.

Page 16: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 16

History 8Jain Sangh requested Bhadrabahu Swami to

stop plague and the terror, so he composed Uvasaggahar Stotra.

The impact of this stotra was so great that the strength of Vyantardeva got

immensely diminished.

Page 17: 5 Explanation of pratikramana sutra 18, uvasaggaharam

Uvasaggaharam Stotra 17

History 9He also called upon Dharanendra,

the divine follower ( devta ) of Parshvanath to help.

Through help of Dharanendra, Varahmihir was fully defeated and

Jain society was relieved.
