    Vandittu Sutra (34)

    Object: This is the longest principal aphorism ofboth night (devasi) & day (ri) Pratikramana.

    A householder or layman is supposed to observe5 ethical codes of conduct (chra),

    12 laymans vows (shrvakchr/shrvaka vrata)and various restraints.

    This aphorism is to ask forgiveness,if any transgressions (atichr) have occurred

    while observing these vows.

    Vandittu Sutra (34A)

    The 12 vows (Shrvaka vrata) have beengrouped in three parts.

    (1)Anuvrata: (Minor or lesser vows)

    Anuvrata means following of vows at a lesserdegree compared to same vows observed bysadhus and sadhvis. They are five anuvrata.

    (2) Gunavrata: (Auxiliary or Self-discipline vows)Gunavrata safeguards anuvratas by increasingits efficacy and quality. They arethreegunavrata.

    Atichr (Atikramana) means;Violation of laymans religious vows,wrong doing or transgression.

    Bowing to the Omniscient pathfinders(tirthankaras) and liberated souls (siddhas),

    the leaders of monastic congregation(dharmchrya), and all the sdhus, I wish toconfess for all the transgressions I may have

    I want to confess for any transgressions of right faith(sammattass), I may have committed during the day in regard

    to (1) having doubts or loss of faith in Holy Writ(2) desire to follow wrong faith (3) uncertainty about thefruits of religion (4) shown disgust towards monks & nuns

    for their untidy appearance or soiled clothes or

    (5) praised or kept acquaintance of a person with wrong faith.

    As regards voluntary confinement of directions (dissu) thefirst spiritual vow of self discipline (guna vrata),

    I want to reprehend for whatever violationsI may have committed from, crossing the limitations ofmovement in (1) upward, (2) downward or (3) horizontal

    directions, (4) extending the limitations in one direction by

    reducing in another and (5) crossing the limit by oversight.

    As regards simplicity (bhogbhoga vrata) the secondspiritual vow of self discipline, I want to reprehend for

    what ever violations I may have committed like,consuming alcoholic beverages, meat,

    other forbidden food and fruits,enjoying the fragrance of flowers, camphor, and wearing

    flower garlands, once or more than once.

    (4) selling or renting domestic farm animals,(5) digging or drilling wells.

    (4) inviting them to take meal after their time has passed and

    (5) doing charity in a state of anger, pride or jealousy.
