& thrilling nature, Kailash ManasaroarYatra is undertaken bythousands of people eery year. Holding signicance for the

HindusastheabodeofLordShia,itholdsreligiousimportance

alsofortheJainsandtheBuddhists.

Lake Manasaroar lies at 4556mt aboe sea leel and is the

highest freshwater lake in the world. As per Hindu theology,drinking water from the lake cleanses all the sins of the past

hundredlies!Howeer,whetheritisthepristinebeautyofthe

regionoritsreligioussignicanceorthethrillingnatureofthetrek

throughsnowcoeredhillyterrains,roughweatherandbeautiful

expanses,KMYisamuchsought-afterextraordinaryexperience.

Ministry of External Affairs organizes Kailash ManasaroarYatraeery year from last week of May up to end of September. A

maximumof960yatris(includingLiaisonOfcers)canparticipate

intheYatra.TheYatraisundertakenin16batches,eachledbya

LiaisonOfcer,whoisappointedbytheMinistryofExternalAffairs.

TheKailashManasaroarYatraadertisementispublishedinmajor

nationalandregionalnewspapersintherstfortnightofJanuaryeery year. The adertisements are also placed in Doordarshan

and All India Radio. Adertisement in newspapers gies ery

detailedinformationabouttheeligibilitycriteria,arduousnature

oftheYatra,risktopersonslife,selectionprocess,comprehensie

medical tests which are mandatory, amount of fees charged by

ariousorganizationsinoledintheYatra,andthenon-refundablecomponent of payments. Both the adertisement and Kailash

ManasaroarYatrabookletarepostedonofcialwebsiteofthe

MinistryofExternalAffairs.

The duration of the Yatra proper is 27 days. Howeer, before

beginning theYatra proper, the yatris need to spend 3-4 daysinDelhitocompleteariousformalities,suchasobtainingaisa,

undergoingamedicalexamination,etc.Theyatrisneedtonalise

theirtraelplansaccordingly.ThescheduleforthisyearsYatrais

gienattheendofthisbooklet.Thetraeldatesindicatedforthe

At Taklakot, if required, the batch will be diided into two

groups, with one group undertaking the Kailash Parikrama

(on foot) followed by the Manasaroar Parikrama (by bus) and

theotherdoingrsttheManasaroarParikramafollowedbythe

KailashParikrama.Thisisprimarilybecausethecampsalongthe

Parikramacanaccommodateonlyabout30peoplecomfortably.BoththegroupswillbetakentoQihubybus.Whilethegroup

which will do rst the Manasaroar Parikrama will remain at

Qihu, the group doing the Kailash Parikrama rst will be taken

toDarcheninadifferentbus.

The Qihu group will moe to Darchen after completing theManasaroarParikramawhiletheothergroup,aftercompletingthe

coachtoAlmora,asmalltowninthefoothillsoftheHimalayas

in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand.As the yatris hae to leae

baggage is packed and ready by 0500 hours.The journey fromKathgodam to Dharchula is performed by non-A.C. buses. The

KMvNwillmakearrangementsfornighthaltonreachingAlmora.

betterunderstandingofeachotherparticularlythestrengthsand

HeadquartersatMirthi.Pithoragarh,wheretheyatrisstopforlunch,

offersspectaculariewofmountainpeaksandgreenhillsides.The

yatrisareadisednottospendtoomuchtimehereasthejourney

onthebankofrierKali,withNepaljustacrosstherier,isthelast

bigtownenroutetoKailashManasaroar.Theyatrisareadisedto

comparedtoanyotherplacefurtheronduringthecourseofthe

toPanguiaTawaghatbybusandthen13kmstrekfromPanguto

Sirkha(KMvNCamp)iaNarayanSwamiAshram.Trekkingwould

startfromPangu.AtPangu,Yatriscanhireportersandponiesforcarryingluggageandforpersonaluseforthefurtherjourney(up

to Lipu Pass). Pangu lies in Chaudasvalley of Dharchula tehsil

andistherstillageenroutetotheYatra.AneiewofKhela

andsurroundingsisseenfromthisplace.Onecanalsoiewthe

HimalayanpeaksinNepalregion.

SituatedontheKailashMansaroarRoute,NarayanSwamiAshram

hasbeenbuiltbyShriNarayanSwamiji.TheconstructionofAshram

startedintheyear1936.Ittook10yearstoconstructtheAshram.

Allthematerialforthetempleandhousingweretransportedfrom

Almora.300to500peoplewereengagedintheconstructionof

the temple and the buildings. Narayan Ashram is known for itspicturesque,scenicandmesmerizingbeauty.

Sirkha is at a distance of 14 kms from Gala. A few shops are

aailableinSirkha.FromSirkha,YatriswillproceedtowardsSamuri

(2316mts)whichisatadistanceof2kms.Thereissteepascent

through thick forest from Samuri to Rungling or Samuria-Dhar(3048mts).ThisisfollowedbyasteepdescentfromSamuria-Dhar

to the stream Simkhola-gad. From Simkhola-gad, a gentle slope

willleadYatristotheillageGala(KMvNCamp).

Thedaybeginswithastrenuous18kmdownhilltrektoBudhi.

Onanaerage,thetrektakesabout7to12hoursdependingon

thetnessleelsoftheyatris.Themostarduouspartofthetrek

istherst7to8kmsuntilLakhanpur.Theroutedownhillisrocky&narrowandmustbetraersedonfoot.Stepshaebeencared

outoftherockheretomakethetreksomewhatcomfortable.After

Lakhanpur,thetracktakesmoreorlessaleelcourse,alongthe

rierKali,whichisaerybeautifulstretch.Alongtheway,asthe

yatrismayhaetocrossthroughsomewaterfalls,raincoatsmaybe

kepthandy.TheillageofLamariisonthisroutewhichisagoodplace to rest and enjoy a hot cup of tea.

FromLamari,thecuringtrailwilltaketheyatristhroughMalpa,thesiteofthetragiclandslideof1998.Here,therubblestillcoersa

partofthecamp.KMvNwillproidelunchfortheyatrisatMalpa.

Thelaststretchofthetrailisacrossaquaintbridgewhichleads

tothecampatBudhi.Oncetheyatrishaerecoupedsufciently,

theymayisittheoldourmill(Gharat)runonhydelpower,whichsuppliesthelocalillagewithneatta.

AfteranoernightstayatBudhi,theyatriswillbeginoneofthe

mostscenictreksontheIndiansideofthejourneywithasteep

climbof5kms.Justasstrainisfelt,thepathleelsoutandwinds

itswaythroughthespectacularalleyofChhialekh.

Thesightsofspecialimportanceinthealleyincludeitsprofusionofraremountainowers(likecobraowers,irises,MayAppleower,

KasturiKamaletc.)andtheglacier.Theyatriswillwalkthrough

abeautifulgreenmeadowontheirwaytoGarbyang,alsoknown

asthesinkingillage,withquainthouseshaingcareddoorsand

newelposts.TheapproachtoGunjiisthroughathicketofaromatic

trees,whichexudesthelocalincense.Theyatriswillalsohaethe

AtGunji,thereisatwonighthaltwheretheITBPmedicalteamwill

testtheyatrisagaintogaugetheirtness.Theywillbeallowedto

continuethepilgrimageonlyiftheyclearthistest.

From this point, the ITBP team, and its doctors, will guide the

yatrisuptotheTibetanborderfromwheretheChineseauthorities

will take oer. This trek along the Kali is done in stages with

ITBPjawansguidingtheyatriseerystepoftheway.TheroutefromGunjiclimbshigherandeleatesinagradualmannerwith

egetationchanges.AstheyatrisgetclosertoKalapani,theywill

passamountainwhichhasSagevyasascae.AccordingtoHindu

legend,thisisthecaewhereSagevyasaperformedpenancefor

years.AagpostedbytheITBPisindicatieoftheentrancetothe

cae.TheITBPhasbuiltahydelprojectoertherierKali,which

suppliespowerfortheKalapanicamp.AtKalapani,theyatrisndan emigration checkpoint, where all the documents including

passportareeriedbeforetheymoetowardstheborder.

ThestretchfromKalapanitoNabhidhangisanuphillclimb.Asthe

yatrismoetotheupperreachesoftheHimalayas,theKaliwillbe

leftfarbelow.

The9-kmstretchtakestheyatrisaboethetreelinereealingthe

faceofthemountains.Duringtheoweringseason,therouteitself

islikeacarpetofowersinshadesofyellow,purple,pinkandwhite.

Thisstretchissubjecttobriskwindsanditisadisablethatone

wearsproperclothesandkeepsheadcoered.

ItisfromthecampatNabhidhangthatonecaniewtheunique

phenomenonofOm.Themountainontheeasternside,OmParat,

haspatternsonthesnow,whichresembleanaturallyformedOm,

araresightsincethemountainisusuallywreathedinclouds.

ThisisthelaststretchinIndiabeforetheyatriscrossoertothe

Tibetanside.Thisisatreacherouswalkatthebestoftimesand

moresoiftheweatherconditionsarenotpropitiousatthenarrow

pass, which is at 16,500 ft.The crossing of the pass is a nelytimedaffairwiththegroupcrossingintoTibetmeetingthegroup

thathascompleteditsParikramaandisreturningtoIndia.Yatris

haetoleaethecampasearlyas0300hourssoastomeetthe

returninggrouparound0700hoursatthepass.Thecrossingmust

becompletedbetween0700hoursand0900hours,thetimewhen

theweatherconditionsaregenerallyfaourable.

Yatrismusttakecaretoaoidsuccumbingtohighaltitudetiredness,

as the winds are bitter and the atmosphere is rare with little

oxygen.Eenahalf-hourhaltcanbedifculttowithstand.Itishere

thatthegrouphastoshowahighspiritofcooperationtoensure

thateachmemberisabletocrossthisdifcultstretchacrossiceandsnowsuccessfully.ITBPpersonnelwillofcoursebepresentto

Extremities (hands and feet), ears and nose must be protected

againstextremecold.Continuousexposureofextremitiescanbring

down the body temperature drastically and cause high altitude

feels that his/her body can sustain the low temperature in thearea.

Prompt treatment for minor cuts, blisters and ulcers must be

Theyatrismustmoetheirngers,toesandfacialmuscles,andexercisetheirlimbsduringperiodsofimmobilitybywigglingthe

Since yatris hae to carry food for the duration of both the

Parikramas, i.e. 9 days, they should plan and purchase the food

items in India itself.As a basic guideline, the food items should

beeitherpre-cooked/partly-cookedoreasytocook,asfoodtakesmuch longer to cook at high altitudes. As far as possible, food

shouldbeconsumedinliquidform.

Thenormalpracticeisforeachbatchtodecideontheamount
