Introduction

Provided here is an instructional material prepared to develop speaking, reading and writing skills for English speakers who want to learn Kannada. The help of an adult with the knowledge of Kannada script is suggested.

It is our hope that this instructional material will enable you to orally construct basic sentences with the help of concepts presented with pictures and side notes in English. It is recommended that you follow this booklet in order as the information is presented systematically.

This book is the second of an eight-book series; each book contains 12 sets of lessons. Each set of lessons can be taught or learnt under 2 hours. Each set introduces a set of spoken language skills paralleled with reading and writing techniques of Kannada script.

The activity in every set can be divided into 3 types:

• Review: Exercises to review language concepts, vocabulary and script learnt in the previous sets • Poem: A poem for improving reading skills followed by a exercises which reinforces language concepts

learnt in previous levels • Script: Aspirated consonants, subscripts and vowel blends

The pattern drills with pictures and exercises are meant for reinforcing the information. These drills aim at establishing this information as a habit and not as a translation. Exercises will require you to apply the lessons learnt, and test your retention of the information presented.

The script section contains an introduction to the Kannada alphabets, symbols, blends and consonant clusters. This will enable you to learn Kannada script in parallel with the spoken language. The sound value in Roman script is also given along with the primary letters to help you identify the target language sounds. This booklet is deliberately made so that you can develop speaking, reading and writing skills all at the same time.

The language used in structurally graded lessons is the standard spoken Kannada. The Bangalore - Mysore dialect of Kannada is generally accepted as the standard spoken Kannada, but you might also encounter both formal and informal usage in this book. The use of linguistic terminology in English is provided and the use of simple, newer grammar terms are preferred over traditional Kannada grammar terms.

I hope that this instructional material will be helpful in your journey to effectively learn Kannada.

Notes to the Teachers

Sight words: These are high frequency words or commonly used words; learners are encouraged to memorize them by sight so that they can recognize them without using any decoding strategies. Please encourage learners to say the terms multiple times in order to memorize them as this book uses lots of pictures. Language immersion is the best technique to learn a new language. When learners have a limited opportunity to immerse themselves in a new language environment, it is very difficult to retain the language. This book employs a limited set of high frequency words repeated in different forms. You may see some new Kannada words coined from simple words instead of the technical terms that are uncommon in spoken Kannada. For example, Teach: ಕ� Teacher/s: ಕ�ಸುಗ(ರು) Student/s: ಕ�ಗ(ರು)

Grammar Terms: Learners of a new language do not have to learn the grammatical terminology of that language. It would be most efficient to use the terminology of their first language. Diphthongs: Kannada script has ten base vowels, three Diphthongs and two semi vowels - ಯ and ವ. Diphthongs are combinations of two sounds. It is possible to write words without using any diphthongs, since they can be replaced by a vowle + semi-vowel. Diphthongs are introduced in these books for compatibility with older Kannada books but the use of semi-vowels is preferred instead.

�ಬು��ರು (ಮ�ಾ�ಾ�ಣ Aspiration) is the strong burst of breath that accompanies with pronunciation. To feel

or see the difference between aspirated and un-aspirated sounds, one can put a hand or a lit candle in front of one's mouth, and say pin [pʰɪn �ನ ] and then bin [bɪn �ನ]. One should either feel a puff of air or

see a flicker of the candle flame with pin that one does not get with bin. In most dialects of English, the initial consonant is aspirated as in pin and un-aspirated in bin. Aspirated consonants are usually absent in native Kannada words. They are mostly used to write words borrowed from other languages like Sanskrit. voiceless voiceless aspirate voiced voiced aspirate
