But, a Guru either to impart Mantra or Brahmavidya should examine the disciple to identify if the disciple is truly a seeker and does not have malicious intentions. A disciple should pray Lord to direct him to a true Guru. Hallmark of true disciples are humility, lack of craftiness, and readiness to obey Guru’s instructions. One obtains a true Guru only with the grace of the Supreme Lord. Also, a disciple should validate Guru’s instructions against scriptures. Upanishads said the qualities of ‘Srōtriyaṁ’ and ‘Brahmaniṣṭhaṁ’ as the hallmark of true Guru.”

Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma)

Śiva Yōgi

“Sadguru Śri Śivananda Murthy garu was born in Śaiva tradition and became a great Śiva Yōgi. He was born for a purpose and had a mission to accomplish i.e. awaken Bhāratīyata (Indianness) and revive Bhārat’s great culture and traditions. His actions are subtle, process is microscopic but the transformation in individuals as well as society is phenomenal. His radiant personality, magnanimous generosity, towering leadership performing various Yāgas and Yajñas, building temples, prolific authorship, inspiring speeches and above all his simple and austere life received the blessings of Jagadguru Śri Śri Śri Bhārathi Tīrtha Swami in Ānandavana, Andhra Pradesh. Śivananda murthy garu built ‘Ādya Lakṣmī’ temple in Ānandavana and instructed everyone to worship Her to eradicate India’s poverty. His multi-pronged approach for the renaissance of Sanātana

Dharma is as below -

Meditation - He spent every moment of his life working to evoke the traditions and Bhāratīyata

Epicenter of Śakti – He conducted several Yāgas and Yajñas invoking tremendous divine energies

Relentless work - Īśvara Ārādhana & Dharma Sanrakṣaṇa.

Revival of Ārṣa Vijñyāna.

Service and Refuge - With utmost love, compassion and divine power, he revived many people from their grief and plight. On the occasion of his birth anniversary on December 21, 2016, let’s all reminisce and follow the path laid by him for the revival of Bharata’s glorious Sanatana Dharma!”.

Tiruvembavai & Tiruppavai Practice of religious observances and undertaking vows in Dhanurmāsa finds elaborate mention in both Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava scriptures and traditions. Different practices are in vogue in different parts of Bhārata. Śiva Puraṇa mention that in Dhanur māsa –

1. Śiva manifested as ‘Fire Pillar’ (Agni Liṅga) in Aruṇāchala on Ārdra star day in the month of Margaśira.

2. Śiva Pārvati Kalyaṇa happened on one Monday in this month.

3. Worship of Śiva before Sunrise is efficacious and auspicious.

Along with the above, devout reading of ‘Tiruvembāvai – Tiruppali Yelucchi’ composed by Maṇikyavachakar is also done.

Similarly, ‘Tiruppāvai’ composed by Śri Āndal (Gōdādēvi) is read in Vaiṣṇava temples and made popular by Śrimad Rāmānuja Ācharya. Rising at early dawn, waking other gōpikās, taking bath together and spending all the time singing Kr̥ṣṇa’s glories and meditating on Kr̥ṣṇa, Gōdādēvi observed Śri (Margali) vratam for thirty days with the only goal of attaining union with Lord Kr̥ṣṇa in this Dhanur māsa. Tiruppāvai is the songs (Pāsurams) sung by Āndal during those thirty days. Paramācharya Śri Chandraśēkhara Saraswati emphasized the

significance of reading both in Dhanur māsa.

‘Gūdhaṁ’ in Sanskrit also means experience. Subrahmanya is one who grants the experience of God-Soul oneness. He is the ultimate goal, the Supreme Parabrahman, propounded by the Upaniṣads. He is extolled as ‘Manōhāri Dēham’ – the one with enchanting physical beauty. ‘Manōhāri’ – He steals the minds of those who worship His Rūpam (Form) i.e. grants the state of merger of mind with the Supreme (Manōlaya or Amanaska Yōgam). He always resides in the hearts of Mahat i.e. great Yōgis. ‘Mahā Vēdabhāvam’ – He is the quintessence of all the Vēdas. Elaborate description about Yajñas is provided in Karmakānda section of the Vēdas. Subrahmanya is the embodiment of the ‘Yajñāgni’ i.e. the sacred fire in the Yajña. This term corresponds to the mantra of Subrahmanya. The very term ‘Subrahmanya’ is made up of ‘Su’ and ‘Brahmanya’. Even in Sri Vishnu Sahasranama, Viṣṇu is extolled as’Brahmanya, Brahmanjnya, Brahmanapriya’. One should know the true meaning of these Vedic terms. ‘Brahmaṇya’ means 1. Vēda 2. Dharma 3. Tapas (Penance) 4. Jñāna (Knowledge) and 5. Paramātma (Supreme Godhead). Those who lead their life as prescribed in Vedas with Dharma and Tapas acquiring and distributing the knowledge are ‘Brahmajñana’. Śri Kāvyakaṇṭa Gaṇapati Muni said that worship of Subrahmanya is needed for Bhārata to preserve our heritage, culture, customs and traditions inherited from our Sages ages ago. Let’s all pray Lord Subrahmanya to grant us the intellect to tread the path of Dharma and Jñāna!” - Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

‘Sundara Hanuman’ Mantra

Hanumān an̄janā sunu: Vāyuputrō mahābala: Kapīndra: piṅgaḷākṣaśca laṅkā dvīpa bhayaṅkara: Prabhan̄jana suta: Vīra: Sītāśōka vināśaka: Akṣahantā rāma sukha: Rāma kārya durandharā mahauṣadha girērhārī vānara prāṇadāyaka: Vāgīśa tārakaścaiva maināka giri bhan̄jana: Niran̄janō jitakrōdha: Kadaḷīvana sanvr̥ta: Ūrdhvarētā mahāsatva: Sarvamantra pravartaka: Mahāliṅga pratiṣṭhātā bhāṣpakr̥t japatāṁ vara: Śivadhyānaparō nityaṁ Śiva pūjā pārāyaṇa ||

This is ‘Sundara Hanuman mantra’ stated in Samhitas. This has 32 nāmas, out of which five nāmas are rahasya nāmas. So, only 27 nāmas are revealed here. Whoever recites these twenty-seven nāmas, will be cured from all types of deceases. When Hanuman reached Lanka in search of Sita Mata, Lord Brahma appeared and praised Hanuman with these names. He also said “Sundaraṁ Hanuman mantraṁ idamēva harīśvara”, which means this is Sundara Hanumanmantram. In this mantra, Lord Brahma quoted all the actions of Hanuma in Sundara Kanda even before Hanuman entering Lanka. Sundara Kanda got that name because the power of this mantra is permeated all across in this Kanda. Also, there is a relation between these 27 nāmas and 27 Nakṣatras. Added to the above, this being composed by none other than Brahma increases the efficacy multi-fold, as God’s compositions always are mystic.

Smarṭurugāmi sanōvatu Dattātrēya is the form of Guru. Guru is the form of Dattātrēya. Without Guru’s grace, one can’t get the grace of Dattātrēya and vice versa. Dattātrēya is an embodiment of pure consciousness and Supreme knowledge (Suddha Chaitanya & Brahma Jñāna). Hence, worship of Datta has found more importance in the practice of Advaita. In Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Prahlada surrenders to Datta and seeks divine knowledge. First few chapters of Uddhava Gīta also contain mention about Datta as told by Lord Kr̥ṣṇa. In the four Yugas, Dakṣiṇāmūrti (or Kapila), Dattātrēya, Vēda Vyāsa and Śrī Ādi Śaṅkara are extolled as Guru Parampara respectively. Dattātrēya is the preceptor for ‘Tripura’ tattva. He belongs to the Avadhūta tradition. Many Purāṇas described Datta incarnation as very efficacious and compassionate. Ādi Śaṅkara extolled Sri Dattātrēya as

‘Smartrugāmi Sanōvatu’ i.e. one who grants everything – health, wealth, protection – just when someone thinks about Him. ‘Dattātrēyaṁ mahātmānā varadaṁ bhaktavatsalaṁ prapannārti haram vandē smārṭurugāmi sanōvatu’.

Jyōtisphāṭika Liṅga Mauḷi vilasat pūrṇēndu vāntamr̥taiḥ

Astōkāplutamēka mīsamaniśaṁ rudhrānuvākān japāna

Dhyāyēt ipsita siddhayē dhruvapadaṁ viprōbhiṣin̄cēta Śivam”

“That embodiment of effulgence and purity, which is pervading from the nether worlds up to the horizons of the higher

worlds that are invisible to human eye, is moist by Śakti.”

Another form where all these fifty-five forms of Rudra are in complete existence is the Sun’s Sphere through which the

structure of our earth and other planets is stage managed.

Hence, Sun is the ‘JyōtirLiṅga’ as far as we are concerned.

That’s why Puranas declared to worship Sun as JyōtirLiṅga.

“Adutyam ca Śivam Vidyāt Śivamāditya Rūpiṇam

Ubhayorantaram Nāsti Ādityasya Śivasya ca”

- Bhaviṣyōttara Purāṇa

Scriptures declare that there is no difference between Aditya

and Śiva.

“Saura maṇḍala madhyasthaṁ sāmbāṁ samsāra

bhēṣajaṁ nīlagrīvaṁ virūpākṣaṁ namāmi Śivamavyayam”

“That Śiva present in the epicenter of Sun’s sphere along

with Amba as Nīlakaṇṭha and also known as Virūpākṣa, is the

panacea for this disease of mundane.”

Rudra mantra nyāsa decrees, “… Saṅkarṣaṇa svarūpā yō sāvāditya: Paramapuruṣa sa ēṣa rudrō dēvatā”

“Resplendence in Sun, the embodiment of all the eleven Rudras, is nothing but the form of Saṅkarṣaṇa” – This viewpoint

emphasizes the harmonious oneness of Śiva and Vishnu. Rudra is the presiding deity for Sun, even as per astrology.

Hence, Sun is the ‘JyōtirLiṅga’.

Dharmic scriptures conduct Sun as twelve forms of Aditya i.e. Dwādaśa Āditya in twelve months based on energy and

radiance provided during that particular month. Dwādaśa JyōtirLiṅgas are based on this only.

“Ētē ke pan̄cāsat rudrā yātra samāsaritāḥ

tadēkaṁ liṅgamākhyātaṁ tatrēḍaṁ sarvamāsthitaṁ ”

Scriptures decree that wherever these fifty-five forms are present, that Itself is Liṅga and it embeds everything reminding

one about the ‘Lord’ in the Śiva Liṅga.

Our humble prostrations to that Supreme JyōtirLiṅga. (To be continued…)

Installing Prahlada statue at Simhachalam: Beyond being the principal cause for Lord

Vishnu’s Nrusimha incarnation, Prahlada also prayed Lord to make Simhachalam His abode, to which the compassionate Lord agreed. Since times immemorial, the efficacy of Simhachalam has been experienced by many. During his discourses at Simhachalam in January 2015, Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu explained how Lord incarnated as Nrusimha to make the words of His devotee true. He also enumerated how ‘Narahari’ and ‘Vanavihaari’ are applicable to other incarnations of Vishnu as well. He thoroughly emphasized the necessity of installing Prahlada statue at Simhachalam to obtain abundant grace of the Lord, just as a calf is placed before the cow to get milk. Inspired by his discourse, a devotee Smt. G. Sarada Devi came forward to bear the expenses. With relentless efforts of Simhachalam Devasthanam administration and staff, hereditary trustee’s encouragement, devotees’ cooperation and above all the grace of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha, Sri Samavedam garu’s vision of benefitting the multitude of devotees became true when the idol was inaugurated on Vijaya Dasami day in 2016. Sri Guruvu garu visited in November 2016.
