Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma)

‘In this dark age of Kali, performing Yajñas and Yagas, following Dharmas, attaining Jnana and knowledge of scriptures, living with good conduct, detachment and dispassion is very difficult. Then, how to attain liberation? “What you said is correct. Chaotic situation wherein Dharmas are not clear is common in this Yuga. But, it is simple to obtain liberation if one follows traditional injunctions to the best extent, while being devoted to God.

Namaḥ śivayā

“One can achieve everything with ‘Namaskāra’ because Śiva is ‘Namaskārapriya’ i.e. gets pleased with prostrations. Even, Rudra Namaka mantras affirm this statement

‘Namaskāra’ can be done in many ways. One can bring both hands together and bend their head with devotion (An̄jali) to offer Namaskāra. Another way of prostration with all the eight limbs touching the floor (Sāṣṭāṅga) is also in practice. Offering Namaskāra while performing circumambulations (Pradakṣiṇa) is yet another way. Namaskāra should not be done between Śiva and Nandi. Among the Namaskārams, ‘Pradakṣiṇa’ Namaskāra is accorded highest importance. Lord Gajānana become

Gaṇapati by performing Pradakṣiṇa Namaskāra to His parents - Jaganmāta and Jagat pitā. Śiva Purāṇa mentions ‘Śiva Pradakṣiṇāt Sarvam Pātakaṁ Nāśyati Kṣaṇāt’ i.e. one shall get instant relief from all the sins accumulated even from previous births if Namaskāra is done with Pradakṣiṇa to Śiva following the scriptural stipulations. Circumambulating around the omnipresent Lord pervading the entire universe grants everything in both mundane and spiritual.”.

– Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma. (Adapted from ‘Śivaradana’ discourse)

Śrī Satyanārāyaṇaṁ Upāsmahē “Humbly prostrating at the Feet of Venerable Sages for their boundless compassion who packed many complex and mysterious aspects of Vedanta, Tantra etc. into this Vrata

and made it so efficacious to aid people like us. This vrata essentially consists of three parts – performing Puja, partaking Prasādam and listening to the story. All the three parts are fully packed with subtle intricacies of Yajña, Yāga, and awakening of Kundalini etc. At mudane level, these stories reassure the existence of the ‘SUPREME’ at every step. For example, it is mentioned repeatedly that whenever anyone wants to perform this Vrata, they get money and materials in abundance. This demonstrates that even in this dark age of Kali, if one even takes vow to perform virtuous deeds, God shall definitely provide

necessary succor. These stories encompass all the four castes of the yore. In the first and second stories, Brahmin and Sudra performed the Vrata with knowledge and utmost faith respectively. Both realized their objectives. But, the trader undertook the vow itself with a pre-condition and later altered the timeline multiple time to suit convenience. Similarly, the king rejected the ‘Prasādam’ (grace) of the Lord. ‘Prasādam’ here represents the offering in Yajña. Those that endowed with riches or occupying high worldly positions doubt Dharma and God. These two are hindrances to attain Vedanta knowledge. These five stories contain profound knowledge about the ‘Five Sheaths’ – Pan̄cakōśa – Ānandamaya, Vijñyānamaya, Manōmaya, Prāṇamaya, and Annamaya. Sage Nārada approaching the Lord to seek relief for all the distressed is Ānandamaya kōśa and so on in the reverse order. One should ponder about the Nārāyaṇa pervading all these five sheaths within us while performing this Vrata. In this Puja, cloth is spread, Kalasa is kept filled with water and tied with threads. Gaṇēśa, Durga, Trimūrties, presiding deities of the quarters and nine planets are invoked with fruit and coin on betel leaf. This cloth represents the universe. Kalasa represents Nārāyaṇa after the invocation with proper chanting of Mantras. ‘Satyam’ (Truth) is commitment. Śrī RāmaKr̥ṣṇa Paramahamsa said that following truth with mind, speech and body under all circumstances is true ‘SatyaNārāyaṇa Vrata’. Just like fire burns those who misuse, God who is none other than the Truth punishes those who do not follow Truth. ‘Satyam’ also means universal laws i.e. those principles that remain unchanged anytime. Anyone violating those universal laws are punished by nature. ‘Satyam’ means ‘that which never fails’. Hence performing this Vrata with utmost faith is certain to yield great merits.”

Kārtīka - Brimming with Kr̥ṣṇa

Namō bhagavatē tasmai vāsudēvāya

dhīmahi; pradyumnānirud'dhāya namaḥ saṅkarṣaṇāya ca|

The Month of Kārtīka is replete with Kr̥ṣṇa. Performing rituals to please ‘Kārtīka Dāmōdara’ is auspicious. Even remembering the ‘Dāmōdara’ līla, in which Kr̥ṣṇa was tied with rope around His waist to release the sons of Kubēra from curse, grants relief from sins.

rudantaṁ muhurnētra yugmaṁ mr̥jantaṁ karāmbhōja yugmēna sātaṅka nētraṁ | muhuḥ śvāsa kampa trirēkhāṅka kaṇṭha sthita graiva dāmōdaraṁ bhakti baddhaṁ ||

Kr̥ṣṇa lifted the Gōvardhana Mountain on Kārtīka Padyami day. Hence, worshipping the model of the same made with cow dung grants protection to those who seek refuge in Him. Purāṇas mention that Kr̥ṣṇa led Arjuna by example to eat at one’s sister’s home on Vidiya day. Kr̥ṣṇa is worshipped in cowsheds along with cows on Śukla aṣṭami day. On Dwadaśi day, Kr̥ṣṇa is worshipped along with all other Gods and Sages, as Purāṇas mention that they all go to Br̥ndāvana. Performing puja for Kārtīka Dāmōdara near ‘Tulasi’ Br̥ndāvana shall yield same merits. Many observe Bhīṣma Pan̄caka Vrata as told by Kr̥ṣṇa Hiimself from Ēkādaśi to Paurṇima. Kr̥ṣṇa performed ‘Rāsa līla’ on Kārtīka Paurṇima day. According to Dēvī Bhāgavata, one obtains the grace of Rādha dēvī if they worship Rādha Kr̥ṣṇa on Paurṇima day. Varaha Purāṇa mentions that one attains Gōlōka if one meditates on Kr̥ṣṇa either at Madhura or Br̥ndāvana in Kārtīka.

Śrī Kāvyakaṇṭha Gaṇapati Muni - Umā Sahasraṁ buddhīnāmasi dātrī siddhīnāmasi netrī | vīryāṇāmasi peṭī kāryāṇāmasi dhāṭī || 6.6

“You are the Divine Mother who bestows the intelligence to obtain all kinds of knowledge. You are the patron of all kinds of achievements. You are a storehouse of all enthusiasm and courage. You are the power to face (stay in the forefront) all endeavors.”

Above sloka describes all the forms of Divine Mother that grant us what are necessary to achieve victory in all our endeavors – Intelligence (Buddhi), Success (Siddhi), passion and bravery (Virya) and power and valor (Dhati) to face anything and march forward.

Vandēhaṁ maṅgaḷātmānaṁ; bhāsvantaṁ vēda vigrahaṁ | yājñavalkyaṁ muniśrēṣṭhaṁ; jiṣṇuṁ harihara prabhaṁ jitēndriyaṁ jitakrōdhaṁ; sadādhyāna parāyaṇaṁ | ānandanilayaṁ vandē; yōgānanda munīśvaraṁ || Sage Yājñavalkya is the son of Dēvavrata and disciple of Maharṣi Vaiśampāyana. With utmost devotion, he forfeited all the knowledge gained till that moment to pacify the anger of his Guru. This knowledge was absorbed by some sages in the form of Tittiri birds and became popular as ‘Taittirīya Samhita’ or Kr̥ṣṇa Yajurveda. Later, he worshipped Sun God. Sun God taught him Yajurveda with horse face, whose meter also runs similar to the march of a horse. This became popular as ‘Śukla Yajurvēda’. He authored Smr̥ti known after his name as ‘Yājñavalkya Smr̥ti’, Satapatha Brahmaṇa and Br̥hadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad. He arranged Yajurvēda as fifteen branches. Sage Kaṇva, Sage Mādhyandina and others continued to propagate Śukla Yajurvēda after him. Maitrēyi and Kātyāyani are his wives. Maitrēyi is a proponent of the knowledge of Brahman. On his birthday, it is our duty to remember and offer humble salutations to this great sage. – SVSN Sarma.

Kārtīka Dīpaṁ Ākāśa dīpa Vrata begins from Kārtīka Śukla Pādyami. It is customary to light the lamp in temples at the time of twilight. Kṣīrābdhi dvādaśi - Churning of milky ocean happened on this day.

On this auspicious day, Lord Nārāyaṇa wakes up from His Yōganidra to give darshan to all Dēvas and sages. It is traditional to worship Lakṣmī Nārāyaṇa near Tulasi Br̥ndāvana. Lighting a lamp

on this day with 360 wicks, removes the sin of not lighting lamp at least on one day within a year. Kārtīka Paurṇima - Fire is lit with garlands made of stray grass in Śiva temples. Everyone walks under this Jwālā Tōraṇam after Mother Pārvati is taken in procession three times. Scriptures mention that this diminishes the influence of evil effects. One should definitely light lamp at home or in temple on this day. Even small amount of japa, hōma, dāna yields good results.

śiva jñānaṁ – Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

This world is Liṅgātmakaṁ Part 13 (This world is the form of Liṅga) 1

‘Our salutions to that gargantuan resplendent Rudra who is not just in Fire, Water, plants and trees, but in everything in this world.’

It is amazing to note that Śr̥tis mention that Rudra is all pervading across this entire universe in 55 forms in eleven different groups with each group consisting of five different forms of Rudra. Wonderful elaboration is provided about this omnipresence in our scriptures. These forms are distributed in 1. Ādhiyajña – Sacirifical Fire 2. Ādhibhūtaṁ - Existing mundane world 3. Ādhyātmaṁ - Here, this refers self or body 4. Ādhidaivataṁ - Structure of Gods and 5. Antarikṣaṁ – Cosmos. Yoga, worship, spiritual practice is all about comprehending their unity in diversity. Each group consists of eleven Rudras known as ‘Ēkādaśa Rudras’.

Their names and forms differ according to their characteristics, nature, and power. Just reminiscing those names yields immense merits. Some have as many as three names. Some have similar names also. They are as follows –

1. 1. Samrāṭ, Kr̥śānu, Āhavanīya 2. Vibhu, Pravāhana, Agnidhrīya 3. Avasyu, Ruvasvān,

Accāvākīya 4. Andhāri, Bandhāri, Nēṣṭrīya 5. Ukṣik, Kavi, Pōtrīya 6. Budha, Vaiśwa,

Vēdasa, Brahmāṇāmśamsya 7. Vahni, Havyavāṭ, Hōtrīya 8. Svātra, Prachēta,

Praśāstrīya 9. Sumdhyu, Sundhyu, Mārjālīpa 10. Ahirbudhnya, Ahirbudhnya, Pratya

Gārhapatya 11. Aja Yēkapāt, Aja Yēkapāt, Nūtana Gārhapatya. 2.

Vēdas and Brāhmaṇa scriptures describe these forms as the forms of Rudra related to Yajña. These are the energy embodiments of Īśvara that orchestrate different tasks in the universe in the form of Yajñāgni (Fire in the Sacrificial Offering).

3. Ādhibhūtaṁ – These eleven forms are the energy embodiment of Īśvara that are

present in nature and are experienced by mundane world. They are 1. Pr̥tvi (Earth)

2. Jala (Water) 3. Tējas (Effulgence) 4. Vāyu (Air) 5. Ākāsa (Ether) 6. Sūrya 7.

Chandra 8. Ātma (self) 9. Pavamāna 10. Pāvaka 11. Śuchi. Out of these, eight are

tranquil forms while three are ferocious. This combination of calm and terrible

forces is the Īśvara Vibhūtis that orchestrate this entire universe.

4. Ādhyātmaṁ – Consciousness in different senses within the human body and the

life vitals. These are 1. Srōtra (ears – 2) 2. Cakṣu (Eyes – 2) 3. Nāsā (Nose – 2) 4. Vak (Speech) 5. Nābhi (Navel) 6. Upastha

(reproductive organ) 7. Vāyu (Air) 8. Ātma (Body). These eleven are Rudra forms within our body. Scriptures refer these

with other names also. They are 1. Vāk Prāṇa 2. Pāni Prāṇa 3. Pāda Prāṇa 4. Upastha Prāṇa 5. Pāyu Prāṇa 6. Srōtra Prāṇa 7.

Tvak Prāṇa 8. Cakṣu Prāṇa 9. Jivā Prāṇa 10. Ghrāna Prāṇa 11. Mana: Prāṇa.

Realization that all the vital energies in our body are nothing but the embodiment of Iswara’s energy happens in a divine plain.

5. Ādhidaivataṁ – Eleven Rudras in the divine forms – 1. Ajaḥ 2. Yekapādaḥ 3. Ahirbhudnyaḥ 4. Tvaṣṭaḥ 5. Rudraḥ 6. Haraḥ 7.

Śambhuḥ 8. Tryambakaḥ 9. Aparājitaḥ 10. Īṣānaḥ 11. Tribhuvanaḥ. These names slightly differ in some scriptures.

6. Cosmic – The eleven potent forms of effulgence in the cosmos are – 1. Bhrājamāna 2. Vyavadāta 3. Vāsuki 4. Vaidyuta 5.

Rajata 6. Puruṣa 7. Śyāma 8. Kapila 9. Atilōhita 10. Ūrdhva 11. Anapatya 7.

As mentioned above, eleven forms of Rudra are present in five planes. Their influence is inevitable on every living being in this universe. The Rudra Tattva of all these fifty-five forms is nothing but Lord’s omnipresent Śakti. The divine form that is pervading within and beyond this entire universe resplendent with all these fifty-five energies in their full form is called ‘Mahā Liṅga ’. (To be continued…)
