like so many others, I lost someone in Khao Lak. A deeply beloved friend of mine died there that morning. At this point in time I had no idea where or what Khao Lak was. I started searching for a good map, but never found one. I tried to figure out where my friend had stayed, if anyone had met her and if she was still alive. After some time I had to accept the fact that she had not survived. I began to piece together, bit by bit, a picture of the place where she had spent her last week. This map is my attempt to give something back to the people who have helped me so much the past year.

DisClaimer Most of the data is collected by interviews and the positions are ed-ited by hand from satellite pictures shot the days and weeks after the tsunami. This means that there are structures and buildings in these pictures which may have been totally eradicated by the waves and others which may just be obscured by clouds. There will inevitably be many errors on the map because of this. Please contact me if you find any such errors and I will update the maps accordingly. This map is not intended to show land property of any kind. The purpose of the map is to mark the possible locations of resorts and other points of interest.

KHAO LAK is the name of a small village situated in the Phang-Nga province in the southern part of Thailand. Khao Lak has in recent years, become synonymous with the whole coastal area, extending up to 20 kilometres north of the village itself.

West is the Andaman Sea, which borders on the Indian Ocean (the worlds third largest ocean).

On the morning of December 26, at 7:58:53(Khao Lak local time), an earthquake with a magnitude of about 9, occurred off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The epi-centre was beneath seabed at 3.32 N 95.85 E. The force of the earthquake generated tsunamis which subsequently swept across the Indian Ocean. At approximately 10 o’clock, the water receded from the beaches of Khao Lak. Twenty five minutes later the first wave hit the shores and swept inland.
