ST JOHN’S MISSION CHURCH, FRON It was lovely to welcome so many old and new friends and neighbours to our Harvest Thanksgiving Service on Friday 11
th September. The service was led by Rev Esther, prayers were said by Ven Peter,
Claire gave the reading and we were pleased to welcome Anthea Bradburn who gave the Address. We thank the Berriew Church Choir who came and gave us their support in the singing of the harvest hymns and who sang ‘Shout for Joy and Sing’. The church had been beautifully decorated by Sylvia and Heather Matthews and Sandra and Lawrence Morris to whom we give our thanks and after the service the congregation enjoyed a harvest supper prepared by all the ladies of the church; our thanks to them also. Our Harvest celebrations continued on Sunday morning when Ven Peter was the celebrant. The young people Millie, Finlay and James led the singing of ‘Thank you God for this new day’ and the offertory was taken up by Millie, Finlay and James. We send our best wishes to Roy Matthews for a speedy return to health and hope he will soon be well enough to return home from hospital. It is with sadness we send our deepest condolences to Mrs Betty Gleave and family on the passing of Mr John Gleave. John was a true gentleman and a lovely man and he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this sad time. A Difference this Harvest in Berriew We in St Beuno’s, the Fron and Pantyffridd, have been most grateful for donations given
in the past (often in our green envelopes) for the mission, ministry and upkeep of our
churches at harvest time.
But we feel strongly that Harvest in particular is a time when we should be giving away
some of our resources to those who have next to nothing.
So this year we are inviting you, if you wish, to join with us in giving, as an expression
of thanksgiving for all that we have, to our brothers and sisters in the Ethiopian Church
who are helping to look after refugees fleeing from war in South Sudan. We will do this
through an organization called Us. (formerly known as USPG), an established mission
organization which has existed for nearly three hundred years. Your help is desperately
needed and will be very gratefully received. Please read on . . .
Help Us to support South Sudanese war refugees. We are sending emergency funds to support the Anglican Church in Ethiopia as it reaches out to
refugees fleeing war in South Sudan.
A civil war between political factions in South Sudan saw 350,000 refugees fleeing the country for the
Gambella and Asosa regions of Ethiopia during 2014.
South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia
Now fighting is intensifying and a further 150,000 refugees are arriving in Ethiopia, putting immense
pressure on relief efforts.
Most of the refugees arrive with only what they can carry, usually their children and a few clothes.
The needs are enormous. But, with support from the Us Rapid Response Fund, the Anglican Church is
doing what it can to provide food aid.
In addition, churches in refugee camps are providing education and serving as community centres.
Please join with us regular worshippers in making a donation today to our Rapid Response Fund
appeal for South Sudanese refugees through the envelopes provided in our three churches in Berriew.
THANK YOU!
Our Harvest Worship this year at St Beuno’s is on Thursday 8th
. October at 7.00pm
and on Sunday 11th
. October at 10.00am. We look forward to welcoming you!
So what about giving to our Parish Church?
We are of course extremely grateful for the support which local people give to us to
maintain and extend your church. So this year we will be hosting a Gift Day in St
Beuno’s towards the end of the year, on Saturday 28 November, when we shall be
inviting you to see what we are about and some of the activities we offer and in which
we would love you to join! We are also very keen to hear from you about ways in which
you think the church and community could engage better. And there will be an
opportunity to give financially on that day as well.
STOP PRESS: Thus far, Fron and Pantyffridd have given over £200 to the Harvest

What our young Folks have been up to this past month!
Teen Seekers and Litle saints
As you know from last month’s newsletter the young folks’ cycle run was
completed and since then they have been collecting their sponsorship –
Many, many thanks to all who have helped them in this way.
On Saturday 12th September they held their coffee morning and once again
you turned out in good numbers to support them – many thanks again.
Their charity fund is almost hitting £900 now so we are hopeful of reaching
our target of £1000 by Christmas!

challenges ahead! And of course – fun and friendship as we build our faith
together.
Little saints –for our Primary aged group – will have their first meeting this
month on Saturday 24th October – NOTE*** – not the usual Saturday as

Congratulations to all of our winners, we hope to see you next year!
Berriew W.I.
In the absence of the President, Vice - President Katriona Heereman welcomed everyone to the
September meeting. Various items were discussed and details for the Centenary evening were finalised.
Sue Minikin explained the rules for our fun Curling evening and we then formed teams and ‘Curled’.
This proved to be quite hilarious and everyone enjoyed the fun. After a few rounds the scores were
added and partners Ferol Richards and Lilian Dawson proved the winners with Ann Markwick and Ann
Dixon second.
The game was thirsty work so we were ready for a welcome tea and biscuits served by Jane Brooks and
Jill Evans.
Iris Tombs won the evening raffle, and the competition,‘Highland Games’, was won by Ann Markwick.
In October we have two meetings, the first one being on 7th,
which is an open evening when many other
W.I.s will join us. This will begin at 7.15p.m. with the speaker at 8p.m. to be held in the Community
Centre. It will be a Musical evening led by Cecil Hayward.. On the 21st we visit the Lych-gate tearoom
for a Cookery Demonstration with Sarah Cullen-Jones. Do come along and join us for either or both of
these evenings.
Did you hear the bells ring out on Wednesday evening? It was to celebrate 100 years since the
formation of W.I. To add to the celebrations we had a buffet supper at the Old School when we
welcomed many past members. Everyone had a wonderful evening, meeting old friends, looking at
photos and having lots of chat! One of our longest serving members, Frances Hughes, cut the
Celebration Cake, which had been baked by Iris and decorated by Ann M, and we drank champagne to
toast the W.I. and wish it success for the next 100 years.
Thank-you to the Bell Ringers, who did a splendid job, and to Deb who accompanied us as we gustily
sang out ‘Jerusalem’ Helen produced an excellent power point presentation of the history of the W.I.
which we watched while we drank, ate and chatted. Thank-you goes to all the members who cooked,
and prepared food and then had the job of washing up! Also a big thank-you to President Sue for
organising the event. Well done everyone for making the evening a success.

of sympathy following the passing of Joan. She would have been surprised at how many
cards and messages have been received. Also, we would like to thank everyone for their
kind donations at her funeral, which was in total over £750.
Wayne.

CHOCS IN BOOTS
The popular fundraiser for the local branch is back. At the end of October they will be on sale
at Lychgate Tearoom, Berriew. Thanks to everyone who participates – from knitting boots,
supplying chocolates or buying them. A big thank you to Sarah and her staff for their
continued support of the charity.

The Tom Cat Spot
October, swallows gone to warmer climes, clocks go back and Christmas items in the shops.
Never mind Wales will qualify for the European Championships to cheer us all up. It's also
worth keeping and eye on the river to see if any salmon return to the Rhiew. I remember them
leaping up the Whirl Pool when I was younger and remember being amazed by their
determination to make their way upstream.
Congratulations to Berriew W.I. on their 100 years in existence. I understand there was a great
celebratory party last month which was enjoyed by all. Well done to them.
So can you remember “Tango”. He would lie in wait and pounce on you from a hole in the
hedge. You certainly had to be very light on the loafers to avoid losing the rear of your trousers
to the hound!!
What a good job has been made of converting Silver Scenes into much needed homes. Well
done to all involved. Of course pre Silver Scenes, a garage and petrol filling station was in
place. Tony and Muriel were there for many years and latterly Mr. & Mrs. Ray Heath. Plenty of
petrol was sold down the years but what was the trade name of the last petrol sold there?
Until next month keep smiling.
Tom Cat.
Dear Tom Cat in the Berriew Newsletter-July '15 edition,
Thank you for the photos from Berriew Endowed School in !953-I recognised myself in the
bottom right hand corner.
However in the August15 edition –in the answers-I couldn’t find my name-only a Howard
Thoms and I also spotted at least one other “wrong” spelling. My Mother would have been
very annoyed.
That aside-it was nice to see these photos. Now I am told that these 1953 photos were extracted
from a School group photo . Now I really can’t remember this group photo being taken-so it
would be really nice to see a copy of this school photo.
I can also offer up another Berriew Endowed School group photo-with a Tombs in it-namely
Brother Hugh-middle row-3rd
pupil from right hand side.
Thank you –HOWARD TOMBS-in Reading.
We apologise for any spelling errors but the names were copied from the sheet that
accompanied the photographs. If anybody does have an original photograph, perhaps
they would be good enough to contact me so we could send a copy to Howard. V.W/ED.
