DAMEN visualizes “Development” as a process of capacity building of the people in order to empower them to solve their socio-economic problems through collective action and their own participation.

Mission of DAMEN is to make the people of marginalized communities understand the true notion of development and build their capacity, which would enable them to organize themselves into groups for collective action leading towards self-reliance and empowerment.

GOAL

The long-term goal of DAMEN is of sustainable development through capacity building of the communities and makes them self-reliant in overcoming their problems through collective action.

Home School Education Program

The goal of DAMEN’s social sector programs is to organize activities in the fields of education and primary health, primarily by mobilizing women caught in the cycle of enduring poverty. Through its home school education program, DAMEN seeks to empower poverty riven females by enabling them to start a non-formal home school and provide primary education 5 to 14-year-old out-of-school children. DAMEN currently supports 95 such female-run home schools in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Nankana Sahib, which provide primary education to around 3,200 plus children and thus keeps them off the streets and affords them a chance to educate, learn, and, hopefully, transition into productive citizens. Attached is the home school report for the last quarter, July - September 2019:

CASE STORY Home School Teacher

Teacher: Mubarra Aslam

Age: 32 Years

Education: M.A. Urdu

Marital Status: Married

Children: 2

My name is Mubarra Aslam. I belong to Lower Middle Class family but it was my dream to get higher education. So I worked hard and completed matriculation from Siddhu Model School Changa Manga. After that I peruse for higher studies and completed M.A. Urdu. After getting higher degree I want to be a teacher so that I can pass on my knowledge to under privileged communities. So I approached DAMEN as I knew this will help me in achieving my ambition. By collaborating with DAMEN I get new ideas & advance knowledge that helped my teaching skills and escalate strength of students in my school.

Health Awareness Sessions

DAMEN is working to provide basic health opportunities for women and children in deprived communities of Punjab that includes Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, and Nankana Sahib. In the past DAMEN was operating health centers and organizing medical camps in these active areas by hiring LHVs. These LHVs were providing basic health services to these communities at very low cost.

It is not allowed by Government of Pakistan that LHVs can run medical camps and health centers. DAMEN is complying rules and regulations passed by Government. So the contract of LHVs has been cancelled in July 2019. DAMEN is now signing LHVs & LHWs to conduct health awareness sessions to women and children in all active areas. The purpose of these sessions is to provide a platform to deprived communities where they can discuss their problems and get beneficial tips from professional LHVs without any consultation fees.

Training and Capacity Building

Empirical evidence suggests that capacity building plays an important role in the growth and expansion of communities and organizations. DAMEN therefore places a great deal of importance on the training and capacity building of its staff and the local community in which it carries out its operations.

· Community capacity building deals with supporting people to develop their skills and use them to raise awareness about social issues and consequently bring about positive change in society. DAMEN’s vision and mission are also based on this principle of self-empowerment and active social participation. Community capacity building is primarily achieved by holding regular Women Social Organization (WSO) meetings.

· DAMEN also creates opportunities for its employees to grow and develop their skills, competencies and expertise so as to enable them to contribute to their self-development and the development of the community.
