BATHUKAMMA of DIVINE TELANGANA Bharat Bhushan

Bathukamma. The very name brings me into a vibrant mood. This fascination for Bathukamma has cast a spell on me since my childhood.

The cascading effect is such that whenever Bathukamma festivities draw near, I go down memory lane, recalling, with a twinkle in my eyes, those cherished days as a toddler and growing up years, during which I had a lively time. The best phase of my life, I must say.

Even today those scenes, as if woven out of fantasy, remain vivid in memory. And, I know from first hand experience that this real-life happening is for keeps, for posterity.

In my childhood, a festive atmosphere prevailed in our ancestral house in Warangal, on the eve of Bathukamma. And it was not

just in our house. Every home I visited in our neighborhood wore a decorative ap-pearance, which in itself was all inviting and exciting a prospect.

There was a distinct grandeur, and to a lesser level still is, that one can only associ-ate with a festival of this nature, where fun and frolic is the order of the day. This is the unique aspect about Bathukamma, which is at once synonymous and symbolic of the Telangana region in Andhra Pradesh.

Every household, womenfolk in particular, had to be a wholehearted part and parcel of the festivities. It is not just about colorful decorations in the front yard but the captivating display of flowers of every use, each in full bloom that stands out.

Truly speaking the paraphernalia essential for Bathukamma were, and are, depend-ent on the availability of water. This, as we shall find out, has a direct bearing on how the festival is celebrated.

Decked up with local flowers, Bathukamma, the pyramid- shaped heap, is the art of decorating with an impeccable precision. The more colorful the get up, the more magnetic is the attraction. This is made amply clear when one gets to see the painstak-ing efforts taken by the family members right into the wee hours of D-Day.

Gods were unhappy because of powers and actions of two demons, Sumbha and Nisumbha. They solicited the advice of sage Medha. She told them that only Devi Mahamaya (Goddess of great magic, Durga) could res-cue them from the demons. The gods combined their spiritual strength and gave to the mighty Goddess Durga. Durga went to demon kingdom in the form of a beautiful woman. Bewitched by her beauty, the demons proposed to her. She agreed on the condition that they would have to defeat her in war. Not knowing the strentgth of the beautiful Goddess, the demons ac-cepted the challenge and were killed in the war.

Different rituals are followed during these ten days, the most impor-tant being that of Durgastami ( 8th day), Navami or Maharnavami (9th day) and on the final day - Dasami, the Goddess is taken out in procession and im-mersed in a lake, river, or well.

Jammi Puja Telugus also worship Jammi tree to celebrate the Pandavas victory. Pandavas stashed their astras (weapons) on the Jammi tree during their 13th year of exile. This bundle of weapons looked like a corpse and was guarded by a snake. The Pandavas retrieved them on the sacred Vijaya Dasami day. So, on this day Ayudha puja (prayer to tools or weapons) is performed. (Tools, books, vehicles and appli-ances etc. are worshipped). People go to Jammi tree on this day and recite the following sloka and also write it on a piece of paper and attach it to the tree:

Some households display Bommala Koluvu (arrangement of toys and dolls). On this occasion women and children visit their friends and relatives in their new clothes. The festival lasts for ten days, begin-ning on the first day of the month of Aswayuja.

Introduction

Telangana or Telingana is an uniquely defined region in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It includes the northwestern interior districts of Khammam, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Rangareddi, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Medak, and the state capital, Hyderabad. The region lies on the Deccan plateau to the west of the Eastern Ghats range. The Krishna and Godavari rivers flow through the region from west to east.

History:

Telangana region (also known as the Deccan) has been ruled by many great dynasties like Sathavaha-nas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Mughals, Qutubshahis and Asafjahis. The Kakatiyas impressions on architec-ture are found still to this day. The Sathavahanas ruled over Telangana for about 400 years from the 2nd century B.C. to beyond the 2nd century A.D. Sathavahanas were also called Salivahanas and Sata-karnis. In the 3rd century B.C., Simukha, the founder of the Sathavahana dynasty, unified the various Andhra principalities into one kingdom and became its ruler. (271 B.C. -- 248 B.C.) Satakarni II, the sixth ruler of the dynasty (184 B.C.) was an able ruler who extended his kingdom to the west. Pulu-mavi I brought renewed strength and glory to their kingdom. The only silver lining in this dynasty was the excellent literary work, Gathasaptasati, of Hala, the 17th Satavahana king. Dharmapuri in Karimna-gar was the capital city for many years.

Culture and Identity:

Centuries of independent existence has given Telangana its own distinctive culture and identity. Even the telugu language spoken here has evolved into a new dialect with a liberal mixture of words from Urdu. Hindi, the Indian national language, is also widely spoken and understood in Telangana.

Festivals :

Telangana celebrates very distinctive festivals like Bathukamma, Bonalu. Bathukamma is Telangana ver-sion of Navratri celebrated all over India. The ladies make beautiful "bathukammas" which are basically an arrangement of flowers and other items, and dance and sing around them, praying for the well be-ing of their families and villages. The Bathukammas are then immersed into the locally accessible water bodies. The other Hindu festivals, such as, Diwali, Holi, and Ganesha chaturthi, are also celebrated with equal enthusiasm as in northern India.
