Śākambharīṁ Jīva Śakti Samdhāyinīṁ Ślōka: Śrī kāruṇya sudhāmayīṁ jagadadhiṣṭhātrīṁ sadā pōṣakīm

sasyāraṇya nadī nadādi vasurūpāṁ annadāṁ dhāruṇīm kṣudbādhāparihāriṇīṁ sakala bhūtādhāra bhūtāṁ parām dhanyāṁ dhānya samr̥ddhidāṁ sutarasīṁ lakṣmīṁ hr̥dā bhāvayē

This slōka describes Goddess Śrī Mahālakṣmī as ‘Dhānyalakṣmī’ i.e. wealth in the form of harvest. She is an ocean of compassion. Though She is the commander of all the worlds, She always nourishes Her children like a loving Mother. Different bounties of harvest, forests, all rivers, earth, all foods and even all the riches that are used to obtain these foods – everything is the form of Dhānyalakṣmī. With all my heart, I contemplate on Śrī Mahālakṣmī Dēvī who not only provides foods to the entire creation right from an ant to Brahma, but also relieves them from the

shackles of mundane bondages which is the real cause of sorrow. Pallavi: Dhānyalakṣmīṁ annadāyinīṁ prārthayē puṇyasampādinīṁ pūrṇāṁ prasannāṁ

According to the respective merits of individuals, Goddess Śrī Mahālakṣmī cheerfully provides for their needs as enumerated by the Supreme philosophy ‘Pūrṇamada: Pūrṇamidaṁ’.

Caraṇaṁ: Śākambharīṁ jīva śakti samdhāyinīṁ | ākāradāyinīṁ ārōgyabhāgyadāṁ śrīkara sudīrghāyuraiśvarya kāriṇīṁ | prākr̥ta vara pradām rakṣita jagattrayīṁ..Pallavi..

Dhānyalakṣmī is elaborately described in Dēvī Bhāgavata and other texts as the Mother who provides the nutritious foods to all the creatures. She is the primal cause that transforms the forms of beings from childhood to old age according to the foods consumed. Also, She is the one who provides longevity, health, wealth, comforts and everything that is required for here and hereafter. She protects all the three worlds. Caraṇaṁ: Puṣṭipradāṁ lōka pōṣiṇīṁ citkaḷāṁ | iṣṭaphala siddhidāṁ indriyādhīśvarīṁ tuṣṭidāṁ svāhā svadhākāra dhāriṇīṁ | sr̥ṣṭikartrīṁ sadā dr̥ṣṭa samvardhinīṁ..Pallavi..

Śrī Māta, enunciated as ‘Chitkaḷā’, is granting favors to all in the form of ‘Swāha’ and ‘Swadhā’ through Dēva and Pitr̥ Yajñas. She is the giver of energy and satisfaction. She is the presiding deity of the senses thus orchestrating the entire universe. (Brahmasri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma garu composed ‘Aṣṭa lakṣmī Gīta Mālika’, a

garland of eight compositions venerating the Eight Forms of Śrī Mahālakṣmī. Embedded

with root syllables (Bījakshara) and secrets of Mahālakṣmī mantras, these compositions are also pregnant with profound philosophy and can be tuned to music. Above song is one among

them describing the form of Śrī Dhānyalakṣmī.)

Traditions-Fulfilments

Worship of Lord Lakṣmi Nārāyaṇa with Tulasi leaves from Puṣya ŚuklaVidiya to Pan̄cami fulfills all desires.

Sadhu Vachanam “Do not brood over your past mistakes and failures as this will only fill your mind with grief, regret and depression. Do not repeat them in the future.”

— Akkalkot Sri Swami Samartha.

Bharateeyam “Ramana Maharshi is one of the greatest spiritual masters of the century! His teaching is complete and perfect. His answers to the deepest questions are the most direct and accurate, simplifying the most complex problems with just a few words, clearing out every doubt or misunderstanding. There is never an unnecessary word, nor a missing one.”

- Shoshi Shofroni – Spiritual seeker blessed by Sri Bhagawan.

Spiritual Quest (Answers by Sri Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma)

Amidst this mechanical life, where is the time to do Sandhya Vandana and other mandatory rites? Is there any

simplified method? “There are no methods to simplify mandatory rites like Sandhya Vandana. Truly speaking, it is cheating oneself mentioning the lack of time to perform them. These rituals do not require much time allocation. These are evaded only due to lack of respect and laziness. Is it even fair to mention lack of time as reason, when so much of time is spent on watching TV and other addictions?”

(‘Personality Development’ lessons from Śrī Lalitā Sahasranāma stōtra)

“‘Maitryādi Vāsanā Labhyā’ is a very important nāma in Śrī Lalitā Sahasranāma stōtra for all spiritual practitioners. Spiritual practice is not just something to take recourse during difficult times, but for all who want to live a good life. It is not just that few hours of Puja we do. To live a good life, all our actions - life, earnings, spending, relations - everything should be filled with Dharma from dawn to dusk. How do we conduct ourselves and maintain relations in this mundane world? To do this, we must develop four qualities.

Significance and elucidation of this Nama should be taught in personality development curriculum, especially during these turbulent times when everyone is unable to stay calm despite being materially successful. Āśāntasya kutaḥ sukhaṁ? Where is happiness when there is no peace? One should keep their mind peaceful. How to attain that state is what our sages taught after thorough exploration of human psychology. In this competitive world, this nāma shall aid like panacea even to children.

This nāma says ‘Maitryādi..’, which means ‘Mytri’ and others. What are these others? Sage Patanjali says in Yoga aphorisms, “Maitri Karuṇa Mudita Upēkṣāṇānsukhaduḥkha puṇyāpuṇya viṣayānāṁ bhāvanāta cittaprasādanaṁ" - Cultivation of friendship, happiness, kindness and passivity brings equanimity in duals - joy or sorrow, merit or demerit etc. leading to a state of peace thereby stabilizing our spiritual practices.

In another place, scriptures mention ‘"Maitryādi citta parikarma vidhāya vidyāt klēśaḥ prahāṇamiha labda sabījayōgā:| Kṣātin̄ca satya puruṣānyatayādhigamya vān̄chanti tāmapi samādhi bhr̥tō nirōddhum’. This means this qualities help overcome hindrances. One reaches the state of ‘I’ in the spiritual practice known as ‘Sabīja Yōga’ gradually leading to the understanding of the ‘Supreme Philosophy’.

Sage Vidyāraṇya in Pan̄cadaśi mentions, “Maitrī Karuṇa Mudita Upēkṣa sadvāsanā pāṭhavēnā durvāsanākṣaya: samyak bhūyāt". This means that these qualities aid in introspection and one gets rid of evil tendencies.

Practicing these four qualities bestows the grace of Mother. Let’s all pray the Divine Mother to grant us that energy, forbearance and courage to cultivate these four qualities! “ - Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma

The first nine days of the month Magha are celebrated as Śyāmalā Navarātri also

known as Gupta Navarātri. Reciting the sixteen

names of Goddess Śyāmalā given by Lord

Hayagrīva to Sage Agastya bestows intelligence.

Śrī śyāmalā ṣōḍaśa nāma:

nīpapriyā, kadambēśī, kadamba vanavāsinī॥

sadāmadā ca nāmāni ṣōḍaśaitāni kumbhaja॥ (Gupta Navaratri begins from January 28, 2017)

TYĀGARĀJA

“Sri Tyāgayya’s life is filled with devotion, music, divinity, simplicity and above all kindness to all his fellow creatures. His innumerable compositions are incredible for their spiritual profundity, command of language, divine ecstasy, musical melody, and devotional zeal. If all the compositions of Tyāgayya are arranged in specific order, that itself forms ‘Tyāgarāja Rāmāyaṇa’. Many of his compositions have become the idioms and phrases in Telugu vernacular such as ‘Endarō mahānu bhāvulu andarīkī vandanamulu’, ‘yenta vārālainā kāntā dāsulē’ etc. Another notable feature of his compositions is that they were not composed in parts – literature once and tunes at another instance. His compositions sprang like a fountain from the very bottom of his heart aroused by experience, ecstasy and devotion. He composed Kr̥tis on almost every God – Rāma, Śiva, Gaṇapati, Divine Mother etc. Some of his compositions are on music itself. His compositions are pregnant with spiritual intricacies from Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas to mysteries of Astrology, Dharma, Philosophy, Yoga to musical secrets compiled from Swarārṇavaram, Swara Ratnākaram etc. Even to this day, thousands gather at his birth place Tiruvayyur on his birthday for his Ārādhana day to sing ‘Pan̄caratna Kr̥tis’. Let’s be true disciples of Tyāgayya by enjoying the melody and crypticism of his music, while encouraging those practicing his music to attain everything here and hereafter.”

Silence - Peace One day a man rushed in and flung himself face down before the Maharshi in a paroxysm of weeping. Great sobs tore his body. The Maharshi said nothing, and no one else dared. I watched the Maharshi. His head was turned aside, and he seemed indifferent. After some little time, the violence of the man's grief subsided and gradually he became quiet. Still no one spoke. Then at last, reverently the man rose and made a deep salutation. The Maharshi turned his head and smiled upon him. I felt suddenly as if all the flowers of the world had poured their fragrance into our midst. - Adapted from ‘The Way of the Spirit’ - Stories by M.A. Piggott

In this spectacular second month of Autumn, worship of Dēvās and pitr̥ dēvās yields highest merits. Presiding deities are

Lord Nārāyaṇa and Goddess Lakṣmī. Goddess Lakṣmī is worshipped in the form of Dhanalakṣmī and Dhānyalakṣmī. The

star Puṣyami belonging to Saturn occurs on the full moon day. Saturn aids in spiritual progress. Little worship of Saturn gets

rid of his malefic effects. This month is the conjunction between Dakṣiṇāyana dear to pitr̥ dēvās and Uttarāyaṇa dear to

dēvās.

In Northern Bhārata, it is traditional to start Magha Snana (ablutions) from Pauṣya Paurṇima. This is known as Magha Mela.

On the day of Sankranthi, many people take bath in sacred rivers at Prayaga, Ujjayan, Nasik, and Haridwar to get rid of sins,

as Purāṇas described about the fall of few drops of nectar into these sacred rivers.

This month also attaches significance to charity of grains, fruits, gold, vegetables, beets, sugarcane, cows especially clothes

and sesame seeds. For healthy heart and good blood circulation, it is good to eat sesame seeds with jaggery. On the Sundays

of this month, Abhiṣēk to Lord Sūryanārāyaṇa with cow milk bestows good health. One can get protection to the house by

applying turmeric and Kumkum at the threshold of the house on Puṣya śuddha daśami. Puṣya Paurṇima is the best day to

start Vedic education.

Bhogi: This is very dear to Lord Indra. One should worship Lord Indra along with

their family deity on this day. Bonfire placed in front of house or at cross roads

are lit by children using wood sticks and garlands of cow dung balls which are

used for gobbemma in Dhanurmāsa. Bone fire is lit with chanting the name of

the God. Not only does it remove evil effects, it also bestows great wealth. It is

traditional to perform Śrī Gōdā kaḷyāṇaṁ as Andal completed ‘Śrī Vratam’ on this

day and attained oneness with Lord Śrī Ranganatha on this last day of

Dhanurmāsa.

Sankrānti: Uttarāyaṇa begins from this day. Sun enters Makara zodiac at 12:48 am in Āślēṣa star Priti yōga Garaji Karaṇa

Mēṣa Laghna. Puṇyakala lasts for 24 ghadiyas i.e. 9hours 36 minutes from the time of Saṅkramaṇa. Any little Mantra, Japa,

Pārāyaṇa, worship gives enormous results. Offering arghya to pitr̥ dēvā yields higher merits to ancestors and bestows with

progeny. On this day, one must take ceremonial bath. Lighting the lamp with sesame oil, archana to Siva with mixture of

rice and black sesame seeds is auspicious. Eating sesame in food is stipulated in scriptures. One gets rid of all poverty and

lives happily attaining wealth by performing ‘Dadhimanthana Vrataṁ’ as told by Sage Jabali to Sunaga. In this vrata, it is

said that Lord Siva must be worshiped with Ṣōḍaśōpacāra, either in the form of Liṅga or Pratima, by performing abhiṣēka

with cow ghee and archana with sesame seeds and rice. One obtains the grace of Lord Śiva staying up all night with

nāmasmaraṇa and Śiva puja on the next day. Another way of this vrata is to worship Yaśōdā kr̥ṣṇa and give Yaśōdā kr̥ṣṇa

along with milk vessel, churning staff and other materials in charity.

Kanuma: Worshipping harvest and animal wealth as ‘Dēvi Lakṣmi’ is the specialty of this day, because animals, especially

cows and bulls and harvest sustain us. The sustaining power in them is the form of God.

- Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma. (Adapted from ‘Swami Vivekananda’ discourse)

“Swami Vivekananda is the Guru of Gurus. His life, teachings, success, personality, leadership, organizational skills and above all his compassion – everything is phenomenal. Though initially attracted by Brahmo Samaj ideals that suited his logical temperament, soon Narendra felt its hollowness and was fueled by spiritual quest. He met many religious leaders and was questioning about Religion, God etc. Meanwhile, one of his friends, Surendra invited Him to sing Bhajans on the occasion of some Guru visiting their home. Narendra went, sang Bhajans and met Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa there. The Master invited him to Dakshineshwar. In their very first meeting, Narendra questioned Sri Ramakrishna about the existence, experience and realization of God. Asserted by the Master, Narendra revived his spiritual practices under the direction of Sri Ramakrishna. He took Sanyasa later and took ‘Vividhishananda’ as monastic name, which later was changed to ‘Vivekananda’.

śiva jñānaṁ – Samavedam Shanmukha Sarma.

The Compassionate Dakṣiṇāmūrti Part 15 1

Knowledge is the embodiment of God. Only God is capable of bestowing knowledge. Hence, God is the Guru of Gurus.

We surrender ourselves taking refuge in ‘That’ praying to ‘That’ Supreme Lord as ‘Nārāyaṇa Samārambhām’ or ‘Sadāśiva Samārambhām’. Nārāyaṇa or Sadāśiva are forms of the one Supreme Lord with two different forms and names, but whose nature and philosophy is the same.

Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti is the embodiment of Sadāśiva’s form as Guru. He is compassion incarnate who manifested as great silence, broke apart the bonds of heart for spiritual seekers and granted them the realization of the Self.

The Supreme Parabrahman came into ‘Being’ as Dakṣiṇāmūrti to grace seekers and grant them knowledge gradually. On different occasions, He manifested in different forms as a result of different penances and bestowed Brahmavidya to seekers.

Sages Sanaka, Sananda, Sanat Kumāra and Sanatsujāta once went to Kailāśa in search of Sadāśiva for obtaining the knowledge of Brahman. At that time, Sadāśiva was found dancing along with Mother Gauri in the midst of all Gods. Sages were dismayed how such person could teach Brahmavidya and hence turned back. On their way back, in Kailāśa itself, they found Lord Siva seated under a banyan tree in the form of handsome young man. Amazed at His enchanting form, the sages approached Him to seek Brahmavidya.

Oh! What a wonderful scene!

There – those spiritual seekers of Brahman who were old – sat around the young swami. They already learnt everything that could be expressed by speech. They sought refuge in the Lord to understand ‘That’ connection with Supreme which is beyond word and speech. The compassionate Lord clarified all their doubts just with ‘His Silence’. Just by looking at Him, the sages had their desire fulfilled of experiencing the Brahman.

What is the purpose of these discourses, once the Lord Himself who is summum bonum of all the educations manifests Himself directly?

‘Silence’ exists in ignorance, but that is inactivity or inertia. Also, ‘Silence’ remains after everything is known. That is ‘Stillness’. That is peace. That is complete consciousness. That is the experience of ‘Sat-Chit-Ananda’ i.e. ‘Truth-Existence-Bliss’.

Search between these two states of silence is nothing but the state of ‘Seek’, ‘Penance’ and ‘Worship’. Result of this spiritual practices is knowledge. Once knowledge is obtained, everything is ‘One’. The embodiment of that state of infinite stillness is ‘Dakṣiṇāmūrti’.

“Citraṁ vaṭa tarōrmūlē vr̥ddhā: Śiṣyā: Gurur yuvā | gurōstu maunaṁ vyākhyānaṁ śiṣyāstū cinna sanśaya||” ‘What a wonder! At the root of the banyan tree, there are aged disciples whose Guru is young. Guru’s teaching is Silence, which dispelled the doubts of disciples.’ – Śrī Ādi Śaṅkara in the hymn on Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti. Banyan tree – This indicates the ever-expanding universe. The origin of this universe, the Supreme Parabrahman, appeared at the root of this banyan tree as the ‘Master of the Universe’. Philosphically, banyan tree represents diversified mind consciousness(‘Medha’). The Self-Consciousness which is the basis for mind is Dakṣiṇāmūrti. Chinmudra – This is nothing but Jñyānamudra, Gurumudra. This is the Yoga of thumb and index finger known as ‘Aṅguṣṭa Tarjani’. This denotes the union of Jiva (self) and Brahma (Supreme). This is the quintessence of Mahā Vākyas such as ‘Tattvamasi’.

In another sense - 1. Asti – Always in existence 2. Bhāti – That which is radiating everywhere 3. Priyam – That is the true giver of joy 4. Nāma – Name 5. Rūpa – Form. This name and form

are the forms of universe. Remaining three denote the nature of Brahman. The silence that exists after the elimination of name and form is ‘Jñyāna’ (Knowledge). Five fingers represent five distinct characteristics starting from Asti to Rūpa. Thumb and index fingers are special, as they represent name and form respectively. Remaining three fingers represent Asti, Bhāti and Priyam i.e .the Parabrahman which remains forever. Union of thumb and index finger indicate the subjugation of name and form by Supreme.
