SUNITHA KRISHNANSunitha

Krishnan, born in 1972, is an Indian social activist and chief functionary and co-founder of Prajwala, an institution that assists trafficked women and girls in finding shelter.

The organization also helps pay for the education of five thousand children infected with HIV/AIDS in Hyderabad. 

Prajwala’s “second-generation” prevention program operates in 17 transition centers and has served thousands of children of prostituted mothers.

The NGO’s strategy is to remove women from brothels by giving their children education and career opportunities. Krishnan and her staff train survivors in carpentry, welding, printing, masonry and housekeeping. 

Malayalam movie director Vineeth Sreenivasan was inspired of her life while developing the story of his latest movie, Thira (film).

Sunitha Krishnan works in the areas of anti-human trafficking, psychiatric rehabilitation and social policy. She was invited to speak at TEDIndia 2009 at Infosys Campus, Mysore.

"She brought the house down in Mysore at (TED Video). And by that, she broke hearts and moved people to action. The audience listened painfully to some of the stories of the more than 3,200 girls she has rescued, girls who had endured unimaginable torture and yet, somehow, nevertheless found the will to heal and thrive.

She spoke of the need for everyone to overcome silence about the phenomenon of human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, and for us not only willing to accept them in our communities but to offer our love and compassion to its victims.

Mother Teresa was born on 26 august,1910 in Macedonia.She was the celebrated mother of the poor and the helpless and she perfectly defined motherhood. Serving miserable was her motto of life and she just loved to help the miserable. She believed that It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us. It is easier to give a cup of rice to relieve hunger than to relieve the loneliness and pain of someone unloved in our own home. SAMPAT PAL DEVI

The Gulabi gang was founded by Sampat Pal Devi, a mother of five and former government health worker (as well as a former child bride), as a response to widespread domestic abuse and other violence against women.

Gulabis visit abusive husbands and beat them up with laathis (bamboo sticks) unless they stop abusing their wives.

DR. KIRAN BEDI

Kiran Bedi (born Kiran Peshawaria on 9 June 1949) is an Indian social activist and a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.Bedi joined the police service in 1972 and became the first woman officer in the IPS. Bedi held the post of Director General at the Bureau of Police Research and Development before she voluntarily retired from the IPS in December 2007. Bedi was the host and judge of the popular TV series "Aap Ki Kachehri" (English, "Your Court"), which is based on real-life disputes and provides a platform for settling disputes between consenting parties.

She has also founded two NGOs in India: the Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation for welfare and preventative policing in 1988which was later renamed as the Navjyoti India Foundation in 2007, and the India Vision Foundation for prison reformation, drug abuse prevention and child welfare in 1994.Bedi was awardedRamon Magsaysay award in 1994 for Government service.

Kiran Bedi along with 15 other police officers set up Navjyoti India Foundation (NIF) in 1987, NIF started with a de-addiction and rehabilitation initiative for the drug addicts and now the organization has expanded to other social issue like illiteracy and women empowerment.In 1994 Bedi setup India Vision Foundation which works in field of police reforms, prison reforms, women empowerment and rural and community development. Her efforts have won national and international recognition, and her organizations were awarded the "Serge Soitiroff Memorial Award" for drug abuse prevention by the United Nations.

DR. ELA BHATT

Ela Ramesh Bhatt (born 7 September 1933) is an Indian cooperative organiser, activist and Gandhian, who founded the Self-Employed Women's Association of India (SEWA) in 1972, and served as its general secretary from 1972 to 1996. A lawyer by training, Bhatt is a part of the international labour, cooperative, women, and micro-finance movements and has won several national and international awards, including theRamon Magsaysay Award (1977), Right Livelihood Award (1984) and the Padma Bhushan (1986).

Ela Bhatt was born in Ahmedabad in India. Her father, Sumantrai Bhatt, was a successful lawyer, while her mother, Vanalila Vyas, was active in the women's movement and also remained secretary of All India Women's Conference, which in turn was founded by Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay. Second of three daughters, her childhood was spent in the city of Surat, where she attended the Sarvajanik Girls High School from 1940 to 1948. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the M.T.B. College (Gujarat University) in Surat in 1952. Following graduation Ela entered the Sir L. A. Shah Law College in Ahmedabad. In 1954 she received her degree in law and a Gold Medal for her work on Hindu law.

AYAAN HIRSI ALI

yaan Hirsi Ali full name: Ayaan Hirsi Magan Isse Guleid Ali Wai’ays Muhammad Ali Umar Osman Mahamud) (born 13 November 1969) is a Somali-born American (formerly Dutch) feminist and atheist activist, writer and politician who is known for her views critical of female genital mutilation and Islam. She wrote the screenplay for Theo van Gogh's movie Submission, after which she and the director both received death threats, and the director was assassinated. The daughter of the Somali politician and opposition leader Hirsi Magan Isse, she is a founder of the women's rights organisation theAHA Foundation.

MEDHA PATKAR

Medha Patkar(born 1 December 1954) is an Indian social activist turned politician. Aam Aadmi Party(AAP), has announced her as party's candidate for North East, Mumbai for Loksabha elections 2014. She is the founder member of Narmada Bachao Andolan and National Convener of National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM), an alliance of progressive people’s organisations. She was a representative to theWorld Commission on Dams, to research the environmental, social and economic impacts of the development of large dams globally. She has also filed a public interest petition in the Bombay High Courtagainst Lavasa along with other members of National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM), includingAnna Hazare. She is known for her alternate view on growth of country and liberalization.

National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM) is an alliance of more than 250 grass root people’s struggles in India working on a range of issues related to socio – economic – political - justice and equity.Medha Tai founded the National Alliance of Peoples' Movements to facilitate unity and provide strength to peoples' movements in India fighting against oppression, further questioning the current ‘development’ model so as to work towards a just alternative. She is National Convener of NAPM.
