LORD BALAJI AND THE 7 HILLS

About Tirupati Balaji

According to the Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu

incarnated as Sri Venkateswara appeared on Earth

during Kali Yuga, in order to save mankind from trials

and troubles of Kali Yuga. Hence the temple built in this

place for Lord got the name Kali Yuga Vaikuntham, and

Lord is referred as Kali Yuga Prathyaksha Daivam. The

temple is also known as Tirumala Temple, Tirupati

Temple, and Tirupati Balaji Temple.

Page 85: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

84

The Lord here is also known as Venkatachalapathy or

Venkataramana or Tirumal devar or Varadaraja or

Srinivasa or Balaji or Vithala. He has a dark complexion

and four hands. In his two upper hands he holds a

discus (a symbol of power) and a conch (a symbol of

existence). With his lower hands extended downward

indicates us that we should have faith and devotion, and

should surrender our problems to him.

About Tirumala Temple

King Thondaiman had built the holy Tirumala Temple

exactly the way he was instructed by Lord Srinivasa to

build it. In fact, Thondaiman, much to the pleasure of

Lord Srinivasa, had recreated the entire Vaikuntam

(Lord Vishnu's celestial abode) on the Seshachala hill.

Page 86: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

85

Lord Srinivasa (Balaji) promised Lord Bramha that He

would reside on the Seshachala Hills till the end of the

28th Kaliyuga and redeem the sins of all the devotees

who would visit the Tirumala Temple.

Later, amid chanting of Vedic hymns by all the Gods,

Sages and priests, Lord Brahma lighted two oil lamps

inside the Garbha Griha of the temple and said "These

oil lamps shall burn eternally until the end of this

Kaliyuga and in the end these lamps would go off on

their own thus signalling the end of Kaliyuga... After

that, Lord Srinivasa would go back to Vaikuntam and

this holy Ananda Nilayam collapses...”

Tirumala Tirupati was named as Bhuloka Vaikuntham or

Kali Yuga Vaikuntham by Sri Ramanujacharya, who

himself is an incarnation of Adishesha.

The Seven Holy Hills

Vrushabadri - Hill of Nandi, the Vahana of Shiva

During Krita Yuga, a demon named Vrushabhasura lived

in Tirumala and was a devotee of Lord Shiva. For his

daily puja and offering, he used to cut his head and

offer as prasadam to Lord Shiva. After the puja he used

to get a new head. Seeing his devotion and faith, Lord

Shiva was very pleased and appeared before him, and

asked him for a boon. Vrushabhasura asked for a fight

with the Lord. Lord Shiva accepted the fight and it

continued for several days. Finally, Vrushabhasura was

defeated. Before leaving his last breath, he asked Lord

to name that hill where he attained salvation, after him.

Since then that hill is called Vrushabadri.

87

Anjanadri- Hill of Hanuman

Anjana (the cursed Apsara named Punjikasthala) did

penance to Lord Shiva for a child for several years.

Pleased by her devotion, Lord Shiva sends Vayu Putra in

the form of a crow carrying mouthful of payasam and

drops it on her hand and asks her to consume it. Later

on, she conceives, and gives birth to a divine child

named Hanuman. As Anjana did penance on this hill, it

is named after her, as Anjanadri.

Neeladri - Hill of Neela Devi, one who accepts the hair

offered by devotees of Lord Venkateswara.

The story goes like this. When Balaji lost a small portion

of hair after hit by a shepherd, a small portion of his

scalp becomes bald. There is no hair growth over that

place and this was noticed by Gandharva princess,

Neela Devi. She felt such a handsome face should not

have any defect. Immediately she cuts a portion of her

hair and implants it on his scalp with her powers. As hair

is considered as the beautiful aspect of women, Lord

Srinivasa notices her sacrifice and he said all the hair

given to him by devotees in Tirupathi belongs to Neela

Devi. Giving our hair to god is the symbol of leaving our

ego. This hill is dedicated to Neela Devi.

88

Garudadri or Garudachalam - Hill of Garuda, Vahana

of Lord Vishnu.

It is believed that Garuda brought Kritichalam Hills from

Vaikuntha to this place.

The White Boar Incarnation of the Lord had saved the

Earth from the clutches of the demon Hiranyaksha.

Mother Earth was pleased with Her Lord and begged

Him to live with Her. The Lord then asked Garuda, to

bring down from Heaven a beautiful hill. This Hill is

called Garudadri. It is believed that the Lord Varaha

lives in Tirumala upon the Western bank of Swami

Pushkarini till today. It is called Varaha Pushkarini.

Seshadri or Seshchalam — Hill of Sesha, Dasa of

Lord Vishnu. It was named after Adishesha (the divine

serpent on whom Lord Vishnu rests).

It is believed that the origins of the Tirumala Hills

(Seshachalam Hills) lies in a contest between Vayu (the

wind god) and Adisesha (the first serpent). During

Dvapara Yuga, Adisesha did not permit Vayu from

entering Vaikuntam, as Lord Vishnu was in the company

of his consort, Lakshmi. Infuriated Vayu challenged

Adisesha to a fight to decide the stronger between

them, Vayu was tasked with trying to blow off Adisesha

Page 90: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

89

from the holy mountain Meru while Adisesha was asked

to protect the peak with his hood.

After a long time, Vayu appeared to yield and Adisesha

lifted his hoods assuming that he had won the contest.

Vayu then blew away one of the peaks. The peak

landed near the Swarnamukhi River and is currently

known as Seshachalam hill.

A variant to the legend is that the contest created chaos

on earth and Brahma, Indra and other gods pleaded

with Adisesha to relent. When Adisesha obliged, the

peak (Ananda hill) and Adisesha were blown off Meru

and landed near the banks of river Swarnamukhi. When

Adisesha was dejected with his defeat, the Gods

converted Adisesha into the seven hills with the hood

named as Seshadri hill or Seshachalam hill or Venkatadri

hill.

Another variant to the story is: Adisesha, fatigued by

the contest was instructed by Lord Vishnu to rest on

Earth in a place that he chose for his stay in Kali Yuga.

Narayanadri - Hill of Narayana (Vishnu)

Narayana Maharishi wanted to do penance to see Lord

Vishnu. He asked Lord Bramha for an appropriate place

where no disturbance will be there. Lord Bramha then

Page 91: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

90

directed him to this hill for his penance. Pleased by his

penance Lord Vishnu presented him a boon that the

same hill will be remembered for him and his penance

and named after him as Narayanadri.

Venkatadri - Hill of Lord Venkateshwara.

’VEN’ meĀns sin, ‘KATA’ meĀns remove. By cēĀntinĒ Lord VenkĀteswĀrĀ’s nĀme witē true love Ānd devotion, all sins will be removed.

Madhava, a sinner suffering from leprosy was cured as

he joined pilgrims going to Tirumala on a pilgrimage.

The pilgrims were singing 'Govinda Govinda!' as they

moved on their way. These words were like magic to

Madhava's soul. He felt a burning sensation and he

realised that the dreaded disease had left him. Brahma,

the Creator appeared before Madhava and said: "You

are the cause for the people to know that whoever steps

upon this hill with devotion, it will burn away all sins and

imperfections! Henceforth this hill will be called

Venkatadri in your honour!"

It is the place where Lord Himself resides. Tirupati Balaji

(Sri Venkateswara) Temple is located in this Hill.

Page 92: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

The majestic seven hills of Tirumala are so sacred that,

Sri Ramanujacharya (incarnation of Adishesha) refused

to put his feet on the hills, as the Seven Hills being the

Seven Heads of the Serpent Adishesha, on whom Lord

Vishnu rests. Therefore, Lord Venkateswara is also

known as Saptagirinivasa or Lord of Seven Hills. The

Seven Hills are also said represent the seven sages

(Saptarishis).

Page 93: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

92

WHY DO DEVOTEES OFFER MONEY IN THE

TIRUMALA HUNDI?

Devotees visiting Tirumala temple never step out

without offering money to the temple hundi (donation

box). It is believed that this is to help the Lord pay His

dues to Lord Kubera, whom he is indebted to. Legend

sĀys tēĀt tēe Lord’s mĀrriĀĒe on EĀrtē wĀs so expensive that He is still in debt! And the money that is donated or

offered in the Balaji temple is a means of meeting Lord’s Debt, by HIS Devotees. Here is more on this legend.

Sage Bhrigu Angry With Lord Vishnu

Page 94: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

93

Once Sage Bhrigu had to find out the worthiest Gods

among the Trimurti of Bramha, Vishnu and Shiva, for a

fire sacrifice conducted by Kashyapa Muni and other

sages. He visited Lord Bramha and Lord Shiva but he

did not believe them to be up to expectations.

Sage Bhrigu then visits Lord Vishnu. At Vaikunta, Vishnu

was resting on the serpent Shesha with his consort

Lakshmi in service at his feet. Bhrigu was infuriated that

He did not notice his entry and kicked Vishnu on his

chest, the place of Lakshmi in Vishnu's body.

To pacify the sage, Vishnu held his legs and pressed

them gently. He squeezed the extra eye in Bhrigu's foot

- the symbol of his egotism. The sage realized his folly

and apologized to Vishnu. Thereupon, Bhrigu concluded

that Vishnu was supreme of the Trimurti and informed

the sages the same.

Lakshmi Leaves Vaikunta

Lakshmi was angered by Vishnu's action of placating

Bhrigu who had kicked Her place in Vishnu's body and

thus insulted her. She abandoned Her heavenly abode

and resided in Karavirapur (Kolhapur) on earth.

Vishnu Follows Lakshmi

After her departure, a forlorn Vishnu followed suit and

took abode in an ant-hill under a tamarind tree, beside a

Pushkarini on the Venkata hill, meditating for the return

of Lakshmi, without food or sleep.

Page 96: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

95

Taking pity on Vishnu, Brahma and Shiva assumed the

forms of a cow and its calf, to serve him. Lakshmi in the

form of a cow herdess sold the cow and calf to the king

of the Chola country. The Chola king sent them to graze

on the Venkata Hill along with his herd of cattle.

Meanwhile, at the palace, the cow was not yielding any

the cow herder followed the cow secretly and

discovered the cow emptying her udder over the ant-

Angered by the conduct of the cow, the cow herder

flung his axe to harm the cow. However, Vishnu rose

from the ant-hill to receive the blow and save the cow.

When the cow herder saw Vishnu bleed by the blow of

his axe, he fell down and died of shock.

The cow returned to the king, bellowing in fright and

with blood stains all over her body. To find out the

cause of the cow's terror, the king followed her and

found the cow herder lying dead on the ground near the

ant-hill.

Vishnu rose from the ant-hill and cursed the king to

become an Asura (demon) because of the fault of his

servant. Upon the king pleading innocence, Vishnu

blessed him to be born as Akasa Raja and that the curse

would end when Vishnu will be adorned with a crown

presented by Akasa Raja at the time of his marriage

with Padmavati.

Birth of Srinivasa and Padmavati

Thereafter, Lord Vishnu took birth as Srinivasa, son of

Vakula Devi. He decided to stay in Varaha Kshetra and

requested Varaha (the boar avatar of Vishnu) to grant

him a site for his stay. Vishnu built a hermitage and

lived there, attended to by Vakula Devi.

A while later, a King named Akasa Raja who belonged to

the lunar race, came to rule over Tondamandalam. The

childless Akasa Raja performed a sacrifice to gain an

heir. As part of the sacrifice, he was ploughing the

fields. The plough struck a lotus, which had an infant

girl in it. Upon the advice of a divine voice that the girl

would be a harbinger of fortune, the king adopted the

girl and named her Padmavati, since she was found in a

lotus (padma). The princess grew up into a beautiful

maiden and was attended by a host of maids.

One day, Srinivasa went to forest for hunting and

accidentally found the pretty young Princess Padmavati,

picking flowers with her maids. Srinivasa then informed

Vakula Devi that unless he married Padmavati, he would

not be calmed.

SrinivĀsĀ tēen nĀrrĀted tēe story of PĀdmĀvĀti’s previous birth and how it was His destiny to marry her.

After listening to Srinivasa's story, Vakula Devi offered

to go to Akasa Raja and his queen and arrange for the

marriage. On the way, she met the maids of Padmavati

and learnt from them that Padmavati was also pining for

Srinivasa. Vakula Devi went along with the maid

servants to the Queen.

Lord Vishnu Borrows from Kubera for Marriage

Meanwhile, Akasa Raja and his queen Dharanidevi learnt

about Padmavati's love for Srinivasa. Akasa Raja

consulted Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, about the

marriage and was informed that the marriage was in the

best interest of both the parties. The God of wealth,

Kubera lent money to Srinivasa to meet the expenses of

the marriage. Srinivasa, along with Brahma and Shiva

started the journey to the residence of Akasa Raja on

His vahana, Garuda. At the palace entrance, Srinivasa

was received by Akasha Raja with full honours and was

taken in procession on an elephant to the palace. In the

presence of all the gods, Srinivasa married Padmavati,

thus blessing Akasa Raja. Together, they lived for all

eternity while Lakshmi chose to live in his heart forever.

Importance of Hundi at Tirupati Srinivasa/ Balaji

Temple

It is believed that Lord Srinivasa (Lord Vishnu) promised

Kubera, that the loan He borrowed for His marriage with

Padmavati, would be paid back by the end of Kali Yuga

with interest. So, the devotees help Lord repay the loan

by offering money in the Hundi. It is believed that those

who make offerings at the Tirumala Temple, never goes

back empty handed.

WHY DO PEOPLE OFFER THEIR HAIR TO LORD

BALAJI?

When Goddess Lakshmi, left Vaikuntam, insulted by

Sage Bhrigu, a forlorn Vishnu took abode in an ant-hill

under a tamarind tree, beside a Pushkarini on the

Venkata hill, meditating for the return of Lakshmi,

without food or sleep.

Discovering Vishnu on the ant-hill, the cow provided its

milk, and thus fed him.

Meanwhile, at the palace, the cow was not yielding any

STORY OF HATHIRAM BABA AND LORD BALAJI

This incidence happened around 600 years ago. A

Babaji, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Ram

(seventh Avatar of Lord Vishnu) from North India (from

Uttar Pradesh), came to South India on his pilgrimage,

Ānd visited TirumĀlĀ. FĀscinĀted āy Lord’s mĀjestic appearance, he decided to settle there near the temple

by constructing a Mutt.

He used to visit temple 3 times a day and continue to

ēĀve Lord’s dĀrsēĀn for ēours. SeeinĒ tēis, tēe temple

Page 106: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

105

authorities started suspecting him, and decided not to

allow him inside the temple anymore.

In sheer despair of being parted from Lord, Babaji

started praying to Lord Ram, crying for His Darshan in

his Mutt. Being disappointed after being repeatedly

turned away from the temple, he used to come back

and spend his time in his Mutt, playing dice board game.

He used to play the dice assuming him on one side and

Lord on the other side.

Once after playing all day long, he went of to deep

sleep. Suddenly, he heard a pleasant voice, “Wake up,

it’s me, your RĀm”. To ēis surprise, ēe sĀw Lord RĀm Ās a small boy, beautifully adorned with jewels. It was not

a dream, but in REAL. The Lord had come to play dice

board game with him. Since then Babaji started calling

HIM as Balaji (Bala- small child, ji-respected).

Overwhelmed with joy, He arranged his board game to

play with Divine. Babaji Defeated Lord in the game, as a

result Lord asked him to request for a boon. What could

any devotee ask for after having a Vishwaroopam

Darshan of Lord Ram. He just asked for serving Him at

His feet. Pleased by his devotion, Lord promised him to

come again to play with him.

Page 107: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

106

Next day, Babaji excitedly waited for the sun to set so

that he would again play dice with the Lord. Finally, the

wait was over. When the temple doors were shut at

night, the Lord moved out of his Ananda Nilayam and

visited Babaji to play the game of dice. After finishing

the game, the Lord returned back to Ananda Nilayam,

promising to come back again.

It became a regular practice for the Lord to visit the

Mutt and spend time playing dice with Babaji at night

when the temple doors were closed. One day when the

Lord was playing dice with Babaji, He heard a voice of

someone calling Babaji. The Lord asked Babaji to go and

check it out. When Babaji went out to see if anyone was

there, he found none. He then returned to inform the

Lord, but he found that the Lord had already left the

place without informing him. When he picked up the

dice board to keep it safe, he saw a diamond studded

necklace of the Lord lying at the board. He picked up

the necklace and kept it safe thinking that the Lord

might have forgotten it and he would return when He

comes back to play next time.

Next morning when Pradhana Archaka was getting

ready to give bath to the Lord, he noticed a missing

necklace. He then took it to the notice of Temple

Authorities. The authorities were worried about the theft

of Lord’s necklĀce. All tēe employees were cĀlled upon

Page 108: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

and enquired about the missing necklace. The Pradhana

Archaka informed the management about the incident

of Babaji in the recent past and straightaway raised

suspicion over him. The Temple Authorities ordered to

get Babaji for enquiry.

BĀāĀji meĀntime wĀs wĀitinĒ for Lord’s ĀrrivĀl to plĀy tēe ĒĀme of dice. For lonĒ, tēe Lord ēĀdn’t come to play. He heard someone shouting his name at the

doorsteps. By the time, he reached there, the soldiers

got in and started searching all over the place. Babaji

was surprised to see them searching all over. On

enquiring he was told that someone had stolen the

Lord’s necklĀce.

Babaji immediately understood what they were looking

for and got the necklace he held safely to return the

Lord when He visits again.

‘Is tēis tēe necklĀce you were lookinĒ for?’ asked Babaji!

One of tēe sĀiniks sĀid, ‘Tēere you Ēo! You ēĀve stolen the Lord’s necklĀce. You Āre under Ārrest!’

Babaji pleaded his innocence but they would not listen.

They arrested and took him to the temple authorities.

On enquiry, Babaji told them that the Lord used to visit

his Mutt and play dice with him every night, when the

temple doors were shut.

Page 109: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

108

‘Tēe Lord ēĀd forĒotten His necklĀce Āt my Mutt Āfter playing the game yesterday. When I noticed, I picked

up necklace and kept it safe to return back when He

comes ĀĒĀin.’ said Babaji.

The Pradhana Archaka of the temple raised his

eyeārows Ānd sĀid, ‘We ēĀve āeen doinĒ Āll sorts of pujas and sevas every day to the Lord for so many

yeĀrs, tēe Lord ēĀsn’t ĀppeĀred to us Ānd He ĀppeĀred to you? Moreover, He played dice game with you?

Whom are you bluffing? Are you a greater devotee than

us? ‘

Some of the Authorities suggested presenting him

āefore tēe KinĒ’s courtyĀrd for justice. Tēe next morning, he was presented in the courtyard of the

Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, as a culprit who had

stolen the necklace of the Lord. After listening to the

cēĀrĒes, Sri KrisēnĀdevĀrĀyĀ Āsked BĀāĀji’s explĀnĀtion. Babaji explained all that had happened with him. The

Emperor believed him to be very innocent. He thought it

would be unjust to punish him without sufficient proof

and proper investigation. He therefore, decided to put

Babaji on test.

Sri Krishnadevaraya told Babaji that he will be given an

opportunity to prove himself innocent. For this, he will

be dumped with heaps of sugarcane in the cell and if he

Page 110: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

succeeds in consuming the entire heaps of sugarcane by

the wake of the dawn the next day; he will be released

innocent and if he failed to do so, he would be punished

for the theft.

BĀāĀji ēĀd no cēoice āut to Āccept tēe Emperor’s decision. He was then taken to the prison cell and tons

of sugarcane heaps were dumped before him and

locked the doors of the cell. Babaji sat in the corner,

closed his eyes and prayed the Lord.

‘Hey Lord! I Ām innocent Ānd you know tēe fĀct very well. I have been charged of theft and put on test,

eating this ēeĀp of suĒĀr cĀne. Hey RĀm! It’s not my test. They have put you on test. They want to test your

existence in this world. If anything, I need in this life is

a little place before your feet to serve you till my last

āreĀtē.’

He left everything on the shoulders of the Lord and

immersed in deep penance. A little later, a giant

Elephant appeared in the cell and by the wake of the

dawn, the Elephant ate the entire heap of sugar cane

dumped there for Babaji. The Elephant then woke up

Babaji from his penance with its trunk. Babaji was

surprised to see an Elephant in the cell.

Page 111: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

When he saw the heap of sugar cane finished, he

realized that his Ram had arrived to rescue him and

immediately fell upon its feet and cried. The Elephant

then blessed Babaji with its trunk and trumpeted loud.

On ēeĀrinĒ tēe ElepēĀnt’s trumpet, tēe ĒuĀrds peeped through the keyholes and shocked to see an Elephant

inside a locked cell. They immediately rushed to the

authorities and informed the matter. Meanwhile, the

Elephant broke open the doors and ran away.

When the Emperor visited Babaji, he was found gazing

at the direction where the Elephant had stood,

repeĀtedly utterinĒ Ā word, “HĀtēirĀm..!” When the

king enquired, Babaji explained that his Ram had come

in the form of a Hathi (elephant) and rescued him from

the challenge he faced.

Everyone who had assaulted him on the charges of theft

exclaimed at the great devotion of Babaji. All accepted

that his devotion to Lord Balaji (Lord Ram) was eternal.

The Pradhan Archaka in particular begged his pardon for

the charges made against him out.

Sri Krishnadevaraya relieved him of all charges and

appointed Babaji as the Pradhana Archaka of the temple

of Tirumala. He happily obeyed the orders of the

Emperor as he got a lifetime opportunity to serve his

Lord. Babaji came to be well known as Hathi-Ram Baba,

owing to the incident.

As a Pradhana Archaka of the temple, Babaji served the

Lord for many years. He later sacrificed his soul to the

Lord and entered a Jeeva Samadhi. His body was

cremated near Venu Gopala Swamy Temple on the way

to Papavinasam on the hills of Tirumala. A Samadhi of

Hathiram Baba had been constructed there and daily

pooja is performed every day.

People visiting Venu Gopala Swamy Temple pay their

homage to this great devotee of Lord Venkateswara.

The Hathiram Baba Mutt had been built on the southern

side of the temple in his remembrance.

THE FAMOUS TIRUPATI LADDU

Lord Venkateshwara is not only fond of flowers and

ornaments but also delicious food.

Laddu is one such delicacy offered to the Lord as

Neivedyam in Tirupati Venkateswara Temple. The same

Laddus are then distributed to the devotees as a sign of

Lord’s Love Ānd Affection.

The Laddus are the mainstay of Tirumala Tirupati

Devasthanam Prasadam for more than 300 hundred

years now. The reason for such a popularity of Laddu

among pilgrims of Tirumala is its unique flavour,

characteristics and never compromising quality, ever

since the tradition began.

Page 114: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

113

More importantly Laddu is the favourite neivedyam of

Lord Venkateswara himself. By eating this Srivari

Prasadam the devotee forgets all the sorrows and

hardships he suffered while reaching the hilltop of

Seshachalam for the divine darshan of Lord

Venkateswara and he returns with a feeling of

contentment.

The Laddu Prasadam is prepared by the Temple board

within the temple kitchen known as Potu. More than

2.78 lakh sweet balls are rolled out every day by an all-

male, all-Brahmin kitchen staff of 350. The kitchen uses

around 10,000 kilos of ghee, 12,000 kilos of besan,

2,000 kilos of cashewnuts, 1,000 kilos of raisins, 300

kilos of cardamom, 600 kilos of sugar crystals and

25,000 kilos of sugar daily!

History of Tirupati Laddu

During the time of Pallavas, prasadam was offered to

the presiding deity. Later, Devaraya II gave a grant of

three villages and gift of 200 panam for certain daily

offerings. In addition, another officer of the Devaraya II

administration, Amatya Shekara Mallanna was made

incharge of arrangements for Neivedyam and

Nityadipam to Lord Venkateswara. He introduced the

time table for food offering to the Lord.

The Tirumala Temple received liberal patronage under

the Vijayanagara rulers. The name given in the

inscription is Avasaram, the word Avas in Sanskrit

means food. This term is noticed even in three previous

inscriptions of the year 1554, 1579 and 1616. The

inscriptions also made it clear that there was a similar

food offering instituted by one Maharaja Sri Shudaji

Bhanuji Pantulu.

One Sri. Kalyanam Iyengar is credited as the Laddu

Architect. He was the brain behind making Laddu

synonymous with Tirupati. He introduced the Mirasidari

System to prepare Laddus. Those preparing laddus in

the kitchen (potu) were called as Gamekar Mirasidars.

The Mirasidars enjoyed the privilege to prepare Laddus

and get their share till AD 2001. Out of each lot of 51

laddus, 11 were given to Mirasi Brahmin families later

AP government abolished the Mirasidari system in 2001.

The Laddu had emerged in its present form of a ball in

1940 under the Madras Government. Though as

prasadam in loose form was known to have appeared in

the itinerary of Lord Venkateswara from about 1803. But

in Inscriptions, Srivari temple indicated the presence of

tēe LĀddu prĀsĀdĀm Ānd termed Ās ‘mĀnoēĀrĀm’ in 1480.

Different types of laddus are prepared on different

occasions. Asthanam Laddu, Kalyanosthavam Laddu and

the Proktham Laddu are the three kinds made during

different occasions.

SILA THORANAM

A naturally formed arch of rock, the Sila Thoranam, is a

distinctive geological marvel that is located about 1 km

north of the Sri Venkateswara Temple, Tirumala. It is

near the Chakra Theertham, on the Tirumala hills.

In Telugu, ‘SilĀ’ meĀns ‘rock’ Ānd ‘tēorĀnĀm’ meĀns garland, strung over a threshold. It connects two

Page 117: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

116

vertical columns of rock; a natural bridge. The wonder

in this is that it is formed with dissimilar set of rocks

with a rather thin link connecting them.

The Sila Thoranam is the only one of its kind in Asia and

is believed to be several million years old. It is 25ft in

length and 10ft in height and is one of the only three

known natural arches in the world.

The other two that cut through the headland are the

Dalradian Quartzite in Ukand and the Rainbow Arch

Bridge of Utah in the USA.

While the rock formation is largely attributed to

intensified weathering and erosion, there are various

legends associated with the Sila Thoranam.

One legend points to the arch resembling the hood of a

serpent, a conch (a Shankh) and a discus (a chakra) –

all being symbols associated to Lord Vishnu or Balaji,

the presiding deity of the hills.

Legend also speaks of how the deity in the Tirumala

temple is of the same height as the height of the arch.

It is believed that Lord Vishnu, here referred to as Balaji

or Venkateswara, while descending from Vaikuntam to

Earth, placed his first foot down at a place called Padalu

or Srivari Padalu which means divine footprints, at the

Page 118: Index [] · Vishnu Shloka - Shanthakaram Bhujagashayanam 4 Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham 5 Sri Venkatesa Stotram 15 Sri Venkatesa Prapti 18 Sri Venkatesa Mangalashasanam 24 Sri Venkatesa

highest point of Tirumala hills. His second foot is

believed to have landed at the location of the arch, the

arch getting created as his foot smashed through the

rocks. Thereafter, with the next step He took is believed

to be the place where his idol is now worshipped in the

temple at Tirumala.

The Sila thoranam location has now been developed

into a garden and all visitors to Tirumala temple, stop

over at this beautiful place steeped in Vishnu

symbolisms, thereby honouring the legends and the

Lord Himself.
