Introduction

The Constitution of India guarantees equality of law to all its citizens and this guarantee

applies to all aspects of national life-including social and economic.

This provision was meant to be a tool especially for the upliftment of those sections of the

population that had suffered deprivation for long periods in history owing to the pernicious

caste system.

One such section is that of backward Castes known variously as µHarijans¶ or µDalits¶.

According to the Economic Survey 2006-07, Scheduled Castes constitute 16.23% of the total

population of the country (2001 Census) but continue to suffer on account of severe socio-

economic deprivation arising out of poor asset base, dependence on wage labour,and other

unclean jobs.

Our history is evidence that many small enterprises like fan-making, and

manufacturing of musical instruments were their monopoly. These deserve to berevived with help of the new available technologies.

Although reservation has been provided to the backward Castes in Government jobs, the number of such openings is obviously small compared to their populationsize. Entrepreneurship is particularly important as the so called backward Casteshave run and managed a number of traditional such as handicrafts, pottery, leather-

work for centuries

NEED OF STUDY

Despite its evident importance for the socio-economic up-liftment of backward Castes, no

estimates appear to be available about the number of entrepreneurs in those classes. It is the

general perception that their number is abysmally small. This appears to be the reason why

entrepreneurship has not been able to make an appreciable or visible impact on the economic

status of the backward classes.

In order to harness their potential and for the sake of their continuous growth and

development, it is necessary to formulate appropriate strategies for making them aware, for

stimulating them, for extending them support and ultimately, for sustaining their efforts in

the right direction.

The research on backward entrepreneurship is scarce and there are few in-depth studies on

this subject. There is an urgent need as well as wide scope for research on backward

entrepreneurship in a developing country like India .
