Periodontics and Dental Implants

In the past, periodontitis was known as pyorrhea, which means discharge of pus through the gums. Using this term was a mistake because, in truth, the periodontal disease involves a more complex group of signs, symptoms that make the treatment and dental maintenance a priority for the overall health of the patient.

At the early phase of the lesion, gums show reddish, inflamed and bleeding. This last sign is very relevant because it is not natural for a healthy organ to bleed. This stage is known as gingivitis, which means inflammation of dental gum. If left untreated, the lesion will evolve into periodontitis, stage in which the tissues that support the teeth weaken, causing mobility of dental pieces and, eventually, loss of teeth.

Our practice is aimed at the prevention and treatment of gum and bone illnesses that affect the teeth. We are also oriented towards healthy tissue and its maintenance. In the event of loss of dental pieces, we are equipped with the safest, updated technology to replace them with implants.

What is the periodontal disease?

The cause related to periodontal disease is bacterial dental plaque, a sticky biofilm of bacteria that grows around teeth and other surfaces in the mouth.

This bacterial deposit, in a susceptible person, would produce toxins that swell the gums, destroy the bones and affect organs such as the heart, the brain or lungs. Periodontal disease has been linked to premature child birth and underweight newborn babies. Studies have shown transmission of the illness between individuals. Additional factors linked to the development of periodontal disease include dietary deficiency, stress, smoking, hormonal changes, pregnancy and immune system illnesses, and more.

Treatment of Periodontal Disease and Implant Dental Replacement

The early stages of the illness is acute and reversible, by following instructions on buccal hygiene and prophylaxis. In moderate cases, illness will be treated scraping and smoothing the roots of teeth. In severe stages, after thorough re-evaluation, treatment might require surgery. Today we have advanced material and procedures that will generate regrowth and restore lost tissue.

When illness becomes extreme and teeth have been lost, these can be replaced by implants. Dental implants restore functionality and aesthetic. We will also restore aesthetics by properly aligning the gums surrounding the teeth and restoring anatomic area that will allow the settlement of prosthesis or will enable tissue to adapt properly to the tooth.

In cases when teeth need to be extracted, we will rebuild the bone to avoid possible alveolar and facial deformation.

We are also basic foundation of odontology, because without healthy gums and tissue even the most excellent dentist work will fail.
