Dummagudem or Dummugudem (Telugu: దుమ్ముగూడెం) is a subdivision in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Dummugudem which is also the name of the subdivision headquarters and is 25 km from Bhadrachalam. According to religious stories, here, in Treatayuga, Lord Rama killed 14000 demons headed by the

brothers Khara and Dushana. The village was said to be built upon the ashes of these demons. The subdivision isnamed after Dummugudem (In Telugu 'Dummu' means dust or ash). Here Rama is called the Atmarama. It has 80Villages under it .[1]

Dummugudem barrage across the Godavari River was constructed nearly 150 years back by the famous British Indiaengineer Sir Arthur Cotton who also constructed Dowleswaram and Prakasam barrages.[2] Somehow this barrage /weir is not well known among Andhra Pradesh people. A major lift irrigation project called Dummugudem LiftIrrigation Scheme is under development drawing water from the barrage pond. Dummugudem to NagarjunasagarDam tail pond lift canal is also under construction to transfer surplus Godavari river water to Krishna river.

GeographyDummagudem is located at 17°51′00″N 80°51′00″E.[3] It has an average elevation of 47 metres (157 ft).

PopulationThe subdivision has a population of 44,393 while Dummugudem town has a population of 3420 (2001 census)[4]

LiteracyThe subdivision has a literacy rate of 36% while Dummugudem town has a literacy rate of 65.8 as per the 2001census .[5] The literacy numbers show a contrast between rural and urban areas of the Dummugudem subdivision.
