I have extensive practical knowledge in designing for all levels of manufacture from one off production to high volume mass production.

Key projects:
Development of a low environmental impact office seating programme for NZ domestic manufacture and consumption.It was established that the office furniture sector in NZ had a value in excess of $50m pa. We estimated that at least half of this was spent on seating but none of the product was manufactured in NZ. The project had the aim to address this issue but also to create a product that which could be manufactured, in short production runs, in house using OP facilities, also potentially developing OP student and staff skills and experience.
Interactive exhibits for Otago Museum. The Survival Factor Exhibit which was completed in February 2010 ran for over 18 months. The origination, design, development, implementation and installation of this exhibit used staff and many students and recent graduates from numerous departments and disciplines throughout OP .
Interactive exhibits for Otago Settlers Museum. Although a smaller scale project that the Otago Museum project this too was an exemplar of incorporating students and recent graduates in a commercial project.
Corporate Signage for Otago Polytechnic. The production of the corporate signage programme involved both local industry and the production capabilities at the Product Development Centre as well as extensive work by staff at NewSplash.

Founder and Managing Director. Canard Design Limited was a multi disciplinary industrial and product design consultancy. With a core capability and track record in product design and innovation, product and production engineering and design management, our development of a robust collaborative skills and knowledge associate network enabled us, despite having a small core team, to engage realistically, effectively and with credibility across a diverse operational and sector base.
The client base ranged from individual inventors to PLCs. The primary areas of operation were medical and healthcare devices, scientific instruments and devices, industrial instruments, virtual reality equipment, interaction and interface design.
Canard Design Limited was an approved supplier to the NHS. 1 of only 2 design consultancies to achieve that status. We worked extensively with Warwick University and De Montfort University both as a supplier and as a lead research partner on both commercial and research projects over a 10 year period ranging in value from NZ$15k to NZ$1.3M.
Following my departure in 2009 Canard Design continued to develop their core streams of activity. Sadly they recently ceased trading.

Canard Design Holdings Limited was a management vehicle set up to allow Canard Design Limited to more easily explore and exploit, research generated output created within Canard Design Limited. Most times this research was seeded back into client based project work or occasionally became the bases of a separate development programme. Examples of this are Angelcrate Limited and Radicle Furniture (see awards below). Canard Design Holdings directors and investors provided seed development and research funding to commission Canard Design Limited to undertake research and development. The activities of Canard Design Holdings was reabsorbed into Canard Design limited in 2010.

Angelcrate was set up to develop and exploit the commercial opportunity for an entirely original and novel packaging/transportation product. The product consisted of a reusable inflatable envelope. This was developed particularly for the wine industry which suffers substantial losses though breakage. The developed package could withstand a 30 foot drop onto concrete without the bottle breaking. Several other markets were investigated including the transportation of scientific instruments, various high value food products and the airfreight of wheelchairs and cycles.
