    The Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Guwahati started in the year 2002, & strives for excellence in research & high quality education. The department is a major academic host offering B. Tech, M. Tech & PhD in Chemical Engineering. Our academic programme is meticulously designed to equip students with fundamental understanding on the subjects of Chemical Engineering. We keep good balance between theoretical and laboratory based practical courses. Apart from this, the department is also engaged in various R&D and consultancy projects in various organizations.

  • The core courses comprise of Fluid Mechanics, Heat & Mass Transfer, Thermodynamics, Process Control & Instru-mentation, Process Design and Project Engineering etc.The various electives offered are Optimization Techniques, Petrochemicals, etc. to let students be aware of present ongoing changes in Technologies & Industries.The insti-tute offer a minor degree apart from the B. Tech. major in various disciplines for the undergraduate students. Some of the students of the department are taking a minor degree in branches like Computer Science & Engineering, Mechani-cal Engineering, Design etc. In the same way students of other departments opt for a minor in Chemical Engineer-ing offered by the Department. The courses taught in CL minor degree are fundamental subjects such as Heat & Mass Transfer, Thermodynamics, Chemical Reaction Engineering and Process Engineering.


    The Department of Chemical Engineering offers B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering to the candidates selected through JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). The Programme imparts fundamentals of Chemical Engineering while simultaneously developing problem solving capabilities through its multi disciplinary curriculum. Students are encouraged to do Summer Internship. Students have to accomplish a Bachelor Thesis Project in their last year of the programme. The course structure provides optimal mix of core and elec-tive courses.

  • M. Tech.

    The Department of Chemical Engineering offers M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering to the candidates selected through GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering).The M.Tech. degree is offered in two specialization:Petroleum Science and Technology (PST) & Material Science and Technolo-gy (MST). The programme spans for a period of four semesters. The students are exposed to core and advanced areas of Chemical Engineering in the �rst two semester. Students devote their entire second year for the Master Thesis Project.

    Presently, we have 57 research scholars in our department exploring Chemical Engineering through ground-breaking investigation into areas such as nanotechnology, biomedical processes, molecular computation, and catalysis.

    The doctoral programme requires a minimum necessity of taking four course work for master (M. Tech.) degreholder and six course work for bachelor (B. Tech.) degree holder in the �rst two semesters. After the com-pletion of course work, the doctoral students have to appear for the Ph. D. comprehensive examination. The research scholar is further allowed to carry out his/ her research work after successful completion of the Ph.D. comprehensive examination.

  • The department has excellent research facilities, well equipped laboratories and has many valuable developments to its credit. Major research areas include Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Process Systems Engineering, Transfer Operations, Fluid Dynamics, Re�nery Engineering, Thermodynamics, Environmental Engineering,Fuel Cells etc. More than 400 papers have been pub-lished by the students till date.

    The Department of Chemical Engineering visions to impart fundamental knowledge to the graduates. It envi-sions to motivate and develop the intellectual skills in them. It strives to promote extensive research in Chemi-cal Engineering which supports the academic objec-tives, industrial needs and the socioeconomic develop-ment of our country. The aim of curriculum is to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of Chemical Engineering.

    Few of the notable achievements of Undergraduates and Postgraduates are :

    Rahul Mayank (B.Tech. 2012) has won IIChE weekly award for Best research paper in a High impact factor International journal by a Chemical Engineering undergraduate student.

    Bharath K Srikanth (B. Tech. 2013) was a member of winning team which presented BIO MOD 2012 at Wyss Institute, Harvard University.

    Abhishek Panigrahi (B. Tech. 2011) was awarded Panasonic higher study fellowship in Japan.

    Sankar Chakma (M. Tech 2011), Kelothu suresh & Debashish Kundu (M.Tech 2012) won IIChE Ambuja’s Young Researcher award for M.Tech thesis.

    Dr. B.K.Kakati (PhD) won best Paper Award in 3rd international conference on Fuel cell and Hydrogen Technology during Nov 2011.

    Prashant Kumar (B.Tech. 2011) was awarded Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal in 2011 for excellent academics & extracurricular achievements.

    Dr. Ashwin Subramani was awarded the President’s Gold Medal 2006.

  • Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Polymers (CoE-SusPol) was set up with the primary aim of overcoming the limitations of conventional plastics by exploring a large number of alternatives including bio-based plastics. Synthesis of cost-effective, sustainable polymers having properties comparable to conventional polymers is an active area of research with a keen focus on several promising candidates such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(caprolactone) (PCL), poly(hy-droxyl butyrate) (PHB) etc. Distinguishing features of this school include hands-on synthesis of polymers such as PLA, PCL, PHB, and nanocomposites along with charac-terizing them using state-of-the-art analytical instruments. Expert lectures on a variety of topics covering different aspects of sustainable polymers will be delivered by eminent faculty and scien-tists.

    Apart from departmental activities, students actively participate in Alcheringa (Annual Cultural Festival, IITG), Techniche (Annual Techno Management Festival, IITG), Inter IIT Sports Tournaments, Spardha, Manthan, Spirit, Kriti etc. The students participation in such activities amend their personality and help them to grow as a professional and prepares them for the competitive and progressive future.

  • A chemical engineer is involved in the design, development, construction and oper-ation of industrial processes for the produc-tion of a diverse range of products, as well as in commodity and specialty chemicals. They are also skilled enough to be in Quality Control, R&D and Supply Chain of various chemical products. Relevant industries include Oil and Gas, Pharmaceuticals, Fertilizers & Chemicals, Energy, Water treatment, Food & Drink, Plastics & Toiletries & Materials.
