    muhyatiis deluded.TRANSLATIONAs the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhoodto youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body atdeath. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.

Theyarise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn totolerate them without being disturbed.

    happiness and distress and is steady in both is certainly eligible forliberation.

    2.16nsato vidyate bhvonbhvo vidyate sataubhayor api do ntastv anayos tattva-daribhiSYNONYMSnanever; asataof the nonexistent; vidyatethere is; bhvaendurance; nanever; abhvachanging quality; vidyatethere is;

    sataof the eternal; ubhayoof the two; apiverily; daobserved; antaconclusion; tuindeed; anayoof them; tattvaofthe truth; daribhiby the seers.TRANSLATIONThose who are seers of the truth have concluded that of thenonexistent (the material body) there is no endurance and of theeternal (the soul) there is no change. This they have concluded bystudying the nature of both.

No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.

    of Bharata.

    bhyaor is again coming to be; ajaunborn; nityaeternal;vatapermanent; ayamthis; purathe oldest; nanever;hanyateis killed; hanyamnebeing killed; arrethe body.TRANSLATIONFor the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has notcome into being, does not come into being, and will not come intobeing. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is notslain when the body is slain.

    fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.

    all-pervading; sthuunchangeable; acalaimmovable; ayamthis soul; santanaeternally the same.TRANSLATIONThis individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neitherburned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere,unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.

    SYNONYMSjtasyaof one who has taken his birth; hicertainly; dhruvaafact; mtyudeath; dhruvamit is also a fact; janmabirth;mtasyaof the dead; caalso; tasmttherefore; aparihryeofthat which is unavoidable; arthein the matter; nado not; tvamyou; ocitumto lament; arhasideserve.TRANSLATIONOne who has taken his birth is sure to die, and after death one is sureto take birth again. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of yourduty, you should not lament.

    2.40nehbhikrama-no stipratyavyo na vidyatesv-alpam apy asya dharmasyatryate mahato bhaytSYNONYMSnathere is not; ihain this yoga; abhikramain endeavoring; naloss; astithere is; pratyavyadiminution; nanever; vidyatethere is; su-alpama little; apialthough; asyaof this; dharmasyaoccupation; tryatereleases; mahatafrom very great; bhaytdanger.

    TRANSLATIONIn this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a littleadvancement on this path can protect one from the most dangeroustype of fear.

    avyavasyinmof those who are not in Ka consciousness.TRANSLATIONThose who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim isone. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who areirresolute is many-branched.

    SYNONYMSbhogato material enjoyment; aivaryaand opulence; prasaktnmfor those who are attached; tayby such things; apahta-cetasmbewildered in mind; vyavasya-tmikfixed in determination;buddhidevotional service to the Lord; samdhauin the controlledmind; nanever; vidhyatedoes take place.TRANSLATIONIn the minds of those who are too attached to sense enjoyment andmaterial opulence, and who are bewildered by such things, theresolute determination for devotional service to the Supreme Lorddoes not take place.

    2.45trai-guya-viay vednistrai-guyo bhavrjunanirdvandvo nitya-sattva-sthoniryoga-kema tmavnSYNONYMStrai-guyapertaining to the three modes of material nature; viayon the subject matter; vedVedic literatures; nistrai-guyatranscendental to the three modes of material nature; bhavabe;arjunaO Arjuna; nirdvandvawithout duality; nitya-sattva-stha

    in a pure state of spiritual existence; niryoga-kemafree from ideasof gain and protection; tma-vnestablished in the self.TRANSLATIONThe Vedas deal mainly with the subject of the three modes of materialnature. O Arjuna, become transcendental to these three modes. Befree from all dualities and from all anxieties for gain and safety, andbe established in the self.

    sarvatain all respects; sampluta-udakein a great reservoir ofwater; tvnsimilarly; sarveuin all; vedeuVedic literatures;brhmaasyaof the man who knows the Supreme Brahman;vijnatawho is in complete knowledge.TRANSLATIONAll purposes served by a small well can at once be served by a greatreservoir of water. Similarly, all the purposes of the Vedas can beserved to one who knows the purpose behind them.

    m phaleu kadcanam karma-phala-hetur bhrm te sago stv akarmaiSYNONYMSkarmaiin prescribed duties; evacertainly; adhikraright; teofyou; mnever; phaleuin the fruits; kadcanaat any time; mnever; karma-phalain the result of the work; hetucause; bhbecome; mnever; teof you; sagaattachment; astuthereshould be; akarmaiin not doing prescribed duties.TRANSLATIONYou have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not

    entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself the cause ofthe results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing yourduty.

    be refrained from; nirhrasyaby negative restrictions; dehinaforthe embodied; rasa-varjamgiving up the taste; rasasense ofenjoyment; apialthough there is; asyahis; paramfar superiorthings; dvby experiencing; nivartatehe ceases from.TRANSLATIONThe embodied soul may be restricted from sense enjoyment, thoughthe taste for sense objects remains. But, ceasing such engagementsby experiencing a higher taste, he is fixed in consciousness.

    attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, andfrom lust anger arises.

    2.63krodhd bhavati sammohasammoht smti-vibhramasmti-bhrad buddhi-nobuddhi-nt praayatiSYNONYMSkrodhtfrom anger; bhavatitakes place; sammohaperfectillusion; sammohtfrom illusion; smtiof memory; vibhrama

    bewilderment; smti-bhratafter bewilderment of memory;buddhi-naloss of intelligence; buddhi-ntand from loss ofintelligence; praayatione falls down.TRANSLATIONFrom anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusionbewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence islost, and when intelligence is lost one falls down again into thematerial pool.

    creatures; anenaby this; prasaviyadhvambe more and moreprosperous; eathis; vayour; astulet it be; iaof alldesirable things; kma-dhukbestower.TRANSLATIONIn the beginning of creation, the Lord of all creatures sent forthgenerations of men and demigods, along with sacrifices for Viu, andblessed them by saying, Be thou happy by this yaja [sacrifice]because its performance will bestow upon you everything desirable forliving happily and achieving liberation.

    The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins becausethey eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who preparefood for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin.

    TRANSLATIONAll living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains.Rains are produced by performance of yaja [sacrifice], and yaja isborn of prescribed duties.

    yat yatwhatever; caratihe does; rehaa respectable leader;tatthat; tatand that alone; evacertainly; itaracommon; janaperson; sahe; yatwhichever; pramamexample; kurutedoes perform; lokaall the world; tatthat; anuvartatefollows inthe footsteps.TRANSLATIONWhatever action a great man performs, common men follow. Andwhatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues.

    modes of material nature.

    regulations; tayoof them; nanever; vaamcontrol; gacchetone should come; tauthose; hicertainly; asyahis; paripanthinaustumbling blocks.TRANSLATIONThere are principles to regulate attachment and aversion pertaining tothe senses and their objects. One should not come under the controlof such attachment and aversion, because they are stumbling blockson the path of self-realization.

    The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is lust only, Arjuna, whichis born of contact with the material mode of passion and latertransformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy ofthis world.

    TRANSLATIONThis supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplicsuccession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But incourse of time the succession was broken, and therefore the scienceas it is appears to be lost.

    4.3sa evya may te dyayoga prokta purtanabhakto si me sakh cetirahasya hy etad uttamam
