Editorial

This issue begins with a paper on analysis of Kusumi lac. Price trend of

Kusumi lac was taken for two periods and compared. In the current decade, Prices rose

very sharply. However, decline has been reported in 2013-14. Market forces are

worried if the trend continues.

Market of Mahua, Imli and Mehandi have been analyzed on the basis of report

from Vyapar Kesri.

A small contribution on use of ethephon for enhancing gum production and its

effect on tree health is given. Besides these are the regular contributions of market rates

from various markets of Central India.

Forest are rich source of NTFPs i.e. tannins rubber, gums, resins, essential oils, honey,

medicinal plants etc., which are also known as Minor Forest products, They provide livelihood

to millions of rural people.Among different NTFPs, gums and resins provide a steady source of

income from collection throughout the year. Gums are viscid amorphous exudation formed

due to disintegration of cellulose and hemicelluloses (polysaccharides) located in the plant cell

walls under the process known as gummosis.

Demand of gums resins have expanded tremendously leading to exploitation of gum

yielding species. To meet industrial demand and enhance the productivity, gum inducer

(ethephon) technique has been developed (Nair , 1995; 1996 and Gupta ,2012) onet al. et al.

the use of different doses of ethephon on Roxb. Similarly, Bhatta (1987) andSterculia urens

Tripathi , 2012 have worked on Dhaora gum. So far, its effect on tree health is of concern.et al.

Scientific studies have not been undertaken yet.

According to a special report published in Dainik Vyapar Kesari NO. 105 on 9 May 2015,th

production of Dhaora gum in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states has been reported to

have increased by 5 times through gum inducer technique which led to enhanced gum

production, Gum oozes out upto 1 Kg. after 10 hours of cut made on the dhaora tree.

Earlier in the year production of dhaora gum dropped down to 40 percent which led to

increase in rates of Samuda grade to Rs.450/kg. But due introduction of gum inducer

technique rate have been reported to have declined to Rs. 100 to 150/kg.

In some cases tree damage was also reported. Therefore, there is an urgent need for

undertaking a long term study on prolonged use of ethephon (Gum inducer) to tree health and

for the present, on field use of gum inducer technique should not be undertaken until it will be

certified scientifically.
