    alsofortheJainsandtheBuddhists.

    Lake Manasaroar lies at 4556mt aboe sea leel and is the

    highest freshwater lake in the world. As per Hindu theology,drinking water from the lake cleanses all the sins of the past

    hundredlies!Howeer,whetheritisthepristinebeautyofthe

    regionoritsreligioussignicanceorthethrillingnatureofthetrek

    throughsnowcoeredhillyterrains,roughweatherandbeautiful

    expanses,KMYisamuchsought-afterextraordinaryexperience.

    Ministry of External Affairs organizes Kailash ManasaroarYatraeery year from last week of May up to end of September. A

    maximumof960yatris(includingLiaisonOfcers)canparticipate

    intheYatra.TheYatraisundertakenin16batches,eachledbya

    LiaisonOfcer,whoisappointedbytheMinistryofExternalAffairs.

    TheKailashManasaroarYatraadertisementispublishedinmajor

    nationalandregionalnewspapersintherstfortnightofJanuaryeery year. The adertisements are also placed in Doordarshan

    and All India Radio. Adertisement in newspapers gies ery

    detailedinformationabouttheeligibilitycriteria,arduousnature

    oftheYatra,risktopersonslife,selectionprocess,comprehensie

    medical tests which are mandatory, amount of fees charged by

    ariousorganizationsinoledintheYatra,andthenon-refundablecomponent of payments. Both the adertisement and Kailash

    ManasaroarYatrabookletarepostedonofcialwebsiteofthe

    MinistryofExternalAffairs.

    The duration of the Yatra proper is 27 days. Howeer, before

    beginning theYatra proper, the yatris need to spend 3-4 daysinDelhitocompleteariousformalities,suchasobtainingaisa,

    undergoingamedicalexamination,etc.Theyatrisneedtonalise

    theirtraelplansaccordingly.ThescheduleforthisyearsYatrais

    gienattheendofthisbooklet.Thetraeldatesindicatedforthe

    batchallottedtoeachyatrimaypleasebenoted.

    At Taklakot, if required, the batch will be diided into two

    groups, with one group undertaking the Kailash Parikrama

    (on foot) followed by the Manasaroar Parikrama (by bus) and

    theotherdoingrsttheManasaroarParikramafollowedbythe

    KailashParikrama.Thisisprimarilybecausethecampsalongthe

    Parikramacanaccommodateonlyabout30peoplecomfortably.BoththegroupswillbetakentoQihubybus.Whilethegroup

    which will do rst the Manasaroar Parikrama will remain at

    Qihu, the group doing the Kailash Parikrama rst will be taken

    toDarcheninadifferentbus.

    The Qihu group will moe to Darchen after completing theManasaroarParikramawhiletheothergroup,aftercompletingthe

    toPanguiaTawaghatbybusandthen13kmstrekfromPanguto

    Sirkha(KMvNCamp)iaNarayanSwamiAshram.Trekkingwould

    startfromPangu.AtPangu,Yatriscanhireportersandponiesforcarryingluggageandforpersonaluseforthefurtherjourney(up

    to Lipu Pass). Pangu lies in Chaudasvalley of Dharchula tehsil

    andistherstillageenroutetotheYatra.AneiewofKhela

    andsurroundingsisseenfromthisplace.Onecanalsoiewthe

    HimalayanpeaksinNepalregion.

    SituatedontheKailashMansaroarRoute,NarayanSwamiAshram

    hasbeenbuiltbyShriNarayanSwamiji.TheconstructionofAshram

    startedintheyear1936.Ittook10yearstoconstructtheAshram.

    Allthematerialforthetempleandhousingweretransportedfrom

    Almora.300to500peoplewereengagedintheconstructionof

    the temple and the buildings. Narayan Ashram is known for itspicturesque,scenicandmesmerizingbeauty.

    Sirkha is at a distance of 14 kms from Gala. A few shops are

    aailableinSirkha.FromSirkha,YatriswillproceedtowardsSamuri

    (2316mts)whichisatadistanceof2kms.Thereissteepascent

    through thick forest from Samuri to Rungling or Samuria-Dhar(3048mts).ThisisfollowedbyasteepdescentfromSamuria-Dhar

    to the stream Simkhola-gad. From Simkhola-gad, a gentle slope

    willleadYatristotheillageGala(KMvNCamp).

    Onanaerage,thetrektakesabout7to12hoursdependingon

    thetnessleelsoftheyatris.Themostarduouspartofthetrek

    istherst7to8kmsuntilLakhanpur.Theroutedownhillisrocky&narrowandmustbetraersedonfoot.Stepshaebeencared

    outoftherockheretomakethetreksomewhatcomfortable.After

    Lakhanpur,thetracktakesmoreorlessaleelcourse,alongthe

    rierKali,whichisaerybeautifulstretch.Alongtheway,asthe

    yatrismayhaetocrossthroughsomewaterfalls,raincoatsmaybe

    kepthandy.TheillageofLamariisonthisroutewhichisagoodplace to rest and enjoy a hot cup of tea.

    FromLamari,thecuringtrailwilltaketheyatristhroughMalpa,thesiteofthetragiclandslideof1998.Here,therubblestillcoersa

    partofthecamp.KMvNwillproidelunchfortheyatrisatMalpa.

    Thelaststretchofthetrailisacrossaquaintbridgewhichleads

    tothecampatBudhi.Oncetheyatrishaerecoupedsufciently,

    theymayisittheoldourmill(Gharat)runonhydelpower,whichsuppliesthelocalillagewithneatta.

    AfteranoernightstayatBudhi,theyatriswillbeginoneofthe

    mostscenictreksontheIndiansideofthejourneywithasteep

    climbof5kms.Justasstrainisfelt,thepathleelsoutandwinds

    Thesightsofspecialimportanceinthealleyincludeitsprofusionofraremountainowers(likecobraowers,irises,MayAppleower,

    KasturiKamaletc.)andtheglacier.Theyatriswillwalkthrough

    abeautifulgreenmeadowontheirwaytoGarbyang,alsoknown

    asthesinkingillage,withquainthouseshaingcareddoorsand

    newelposts.TheapproachtoGunjiisthroughathicketofaromatic

    egetationchanges.AstheyatrisgetclosertoKalapani,theywill

    passamountainwhichhasSagevyasascae.AccordingtoHindu

    phenomenonofOm.Themountainontheeasternside,OmParat,

    haspatternsonthesnow,whichresembleanaturallyformedOm,

    ThisisthelaststretchinIndiabeforetheyatriscrossoertothe

    Tibetanside.Thisisatreacherouswalkatthebestoftimesand

    moresoiftheweatherconditionsarenotpropitiousatthenarrow

    pass, which is at 16,500 ft.The crossing of the pass is a nelytimedaffairwiththegroupcrossingintoTibetmeetingthegroup

    thathascompleteditsParikramaandisreturningtoIndia.Yatris

    haetoleaethecampasearlyas0300hourssoastomeetthe

    returninggrouparound0700hoursatthepass.Thecrossingmust

    becompletedbetween0700hoursand0900hours,thetimewhen

    theweatherconditionsaregenerallyfaourable.

    Yatrismusttakecaretoaoidsuccumbingtohighaltitudetiredness,

    as the winds are bitter and the atmosphere is rare with little

    tothesunandlight,RakshashTaliscomparedtothemoonand

    thedarknessofnight.ItisbelieedthatRaanameditatedonthe

    shoresofRakshasTaltoseekShiasfaour.Thelake,is,therefore,

    TheParikramaofMt.KailashbeginsfromDarchen.Yatrisspendthe

    dayinthetown,whichproidesonlybasicfacilities.Thegrouphas

    tomakeitsownarrangementsforfoodandthisiswherethe5kilos

    ofcommonfoodstuffcarriedbyeachyatricomesinhandy.Astoe

    andaroomforcookingwillbeproidedbytheChineseauthorities.

    ThisisthelastplaceformakingISDcallsonthisParikramasincetheothercamps,bothontheKailashandtheManasaroarroutes

    arenotequippedwithsuchfacilities.

    This48KmParikramaofKailashstartsfromtheBarkhaPlains,aat,

    barrenstretchofland.TherstlegwilltaketheyatristoDeraphuk,

    14kmsfromDarchen.Therst10kmsarecoeredbybus/truck.UponreachingtheYamdwarthepropertrekbegins.Afterabout

    10kms,theyatrisentertheLaChuvalleyorthevalleyoftheRier

    oftheGods.Alongtheway,magnicentrockcliffstoweraround,

    withstreamsandwaterfallsowingfromsomeofthem.Someof

    the rocks hae inscriptions of Buddhist mantras on them.Yatris

    ItproidesamagnicentiewofMt.Kailash.Thisistheclosestand

    clearestiewonecangetofKailash,aspectacularsightespeciallywhen illuminated by the rays of the setting sun.The yatris will

    spendanightinthiscamp.

    The next day, they will set off from Deraphuk on a trail which

    ascends to an 18,600-feet pass, supposed to be guarded by a

    TibetangoddesscalledDolma.Alongtheway,aatstretchstrewnwithdiscardedclothingcanbeseen.ThisisShiSthal,whereYama,

    theKingofDeathissupposedtojudgethosewhocrossit.Crossing

    the Dolma pass remains a test of faith and determination, as

    blizzardsareknowntostrikewithoutwarning.Arockhereissaid

    torepresentthegoddessTaraDei.YatriscanpraytoGoddesswith

    theprayerags,placepotsofbutterandlightincensesticks.Itisnotadisabletostayherefortoolongastherareedatmosphere

    maycausebreathingproblems.

    As the yatris descend from the Dolma Pass, they will pass the

    emerald green Gauri Kund, the lake where goddess Parati is

    Manasaroar. The lake changes colour with the passing hours

    andseasons.Itmaybeplacidnowandtempestuoussoonafter.

    Thereectionofthesun,theclouds, thestarsandeen,Kailash,

    keepsthebeholderspellbound.Thelakeislarge,being88-kmin

    circumferenceandwithamaximumdepthof300ft,itsfascinatingariety and beauty capture the heart and imagination of the

    iewers.The water of the lake can be freezing at certain times

    of the day and during certain seasons- and pleasantly warm at

    others.Regardlessofthetemperature,deoutyatrisdontmissan

    toQugu,adistanceofabout85kms.ThereisabriefhaltatHore,

    which has a basic market where one can purchase fresh fruits

    andegetables.ThecampatQuguislocatedonthebanksofthe

    ManasaroarLake.Yatriscan,iftheywish,performtheirpujahere.

    The next day, the yatris return to Qihu, thus completing the

    ParikramaofLakeManasaroar.Theywillstayonemoredayat

    Qihu to meet the other half of their original group, and return

    toTaklakottogether.

    Since yatris hae to carry food for the duration of both the

    Parikramas, i.e. 9 days, they should plan and purchase the food

    items in India itself.As a basic guideline, the food items should

    beeitherpre-cooked/partly-cookedoreasytocook,asfoodtakesmuch longer to cook at high altitudes. As far as possible, food

    shouldbeconsumedinliquidform.

    Thenormalpracticeisforeachbatchtodecideontheamount

    andtype of food itemsthey wish to carrywith them andmake

    purchasesaccordingly.Yatrisofeachgroupcouldmakecombinedpurchase of food items in New Delhi for the sake of logistical
