THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”

CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a con-temporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritu-ally and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Mu-sic Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the rec-ognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will culmi-nate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethle-hem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and iden-tifying folks to assist on vari-ous committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Chris-tian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

NYSERDA PROVIDES FREE ENERGY ASSESSMENTS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

AND NOT-FOR-PROFITSCAPITAL REGION – NYSERDA off ers no-cost energy assessments throughout New York State. A team of energy effi ciency experts identify cost-eff ective, energy-saving opportunities (e.g. light-ing, heating equipment, motors, thermostats, insulation) to help your organization make informed decisions. Organizations with 10 full-time equivalent employees or fewer are eligible for this free program. Contact L&S Energy Services, the regional program contractor, at 518-383-9405 x223 or [email protected].

Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adop-tion clinics held three times each month.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from fi rst through sixth grade, some of whom talk about their experiences with stut-tering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Ac-tion: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofi t Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPS

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, re-move the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a remind-er that You are not forgot-ten.” The Stars are given free-ly to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded War-riors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Vet-eran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Dona-tions are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].

Tyke

Charlotte

11 Babies of Love

Say hello to Charlotte, A twelve week old hound/bulldog mix. She loves attention and is a typical

playful puppy. She would be great for an active fam-ily with lots of kids and a fenced in yard. She loves

kids and other dogs to play with. She is vet checked, has two sets of shots, de-wormed and more.

Tyke has kind of a funny story on how he was rescued and I am so glad that we did. He is absolutely wonder-ful. About two weeks back we received an email with pictures of dogs that needed rescue from a kill facility

in the Carolina’s. In the way corner of the picture there was this dog with his head tilted asking “What about me?” Something just tugged at my heart strings and I

called facility to ask the story on the Brown and White dog. They said his time was almost up and heneeded

rescue. He was a bigger puppy about 4 months old and was brought in by Animal Control. I knew we had to save him. We payed for his vetting and transport and he is here now at the shelter safe and sound. Please come and meet him. He is adorable, wondeful and

would make a great addition to any family.

These puppies and their mama were taken in by a wonderful

woman who kept them safe until we could arrange for transport. She is keeping the mom and the babies have all been vet checked,

de-wormed and have received their age appropriate shots. They are

9 week old lab mixes and they all have wonderful personalities.

Another new project this year for the Club was preparing a meal in July for 35 guests at the Ronald McDonald House in Albany. Other yearly projects include providing scholar-ships for High school seniors, support for female veterans, adopt a family at Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas, sponsor-ing contests for High school students in arts, crafts and cre-ative writing with cash prizes, semi-annual Adopt-a-Road-side and providing an annual Un-birthday Party for troubled teenage girls at St Anne Insti-tute. The Club is part of the New York State Federation of Woman’s Clubs and General Federation of Woman’s Clubs. Their major fundraiser is the Annual Antique Show and Sale held every February at Shenendehowa High School. The Club also holds social events throughout the year. For information call 877-5514.

Frazzled new parents seek out any way to get their infants to sleep soundly, particularly when these par-ents also could use some shut-eye. Some parents will attest that newborns seem to come into the world with their days and nights mixed up, as well as with an aver-sion to resting comfortably in a bassinet or crib, noting how infants seem to doze off most comfortably in swings or car seats.

While it may be tempting to let sleeping babies lie, or rather, sit, in car seats when they’re asleep, research has suggested that car seats are not the safest places for babies to sleep. A relatively recent study in the journal Pediatrics showed that the car seats can compress the chest wall and reduce air-way size, possibly lowering blood oxygen levels. The study placed 200 healthy newborns in a hospital crib for 30 minutes and in a car bed or car seat for an hour. Infants who slept in a car seat or car bed had lower oxygen levels than when

CAR SEATS AND SWINGS MAY NOT SLEEP BABY SAFELY

Studies show that car seats are not safe sleeping

locations for infants

they slept in the crib.

Pulmonary pediatrics ex-perts at Massachusetts Gen-eral Hospital concur, saying car seats can cause mild respiratory compromise in about 20 percent of new-borns. This means that the car seats should be restrict-ed to use in the car only, and not be used as a makeshift sleeping area outside of the vehicle.

Hypoxia, or a fall in oxygen levels that causes a deficien-cy in the blood, is associated with behavioral problems and adverse effects on de-velopment, offer researchers from Auckland University. Limiting time spent in car seats, and similarly, infant swings, can help prevent the condition. A child’s head can fall forward onto his or her chest and cause a decline in available oxygen. When children are in car seats for travel, ensure the seat is set

at the proper incline, usually a 45-degree angle. This helps keep airways open.

If a child falls asleep in a swing at home, keep an eye on him or her. Turn off the rocking mechanism when he or she falls asleep and be sure that infants are always buckled in securely to avoid their slipping out and falling. Keep the swing in the most reclined position until the baby is able to lift and hold up his or her head on his or her own. Also, don’t pad the swing with loose pillows or blankets, as this can increase SIDS risk, advises the Con-sumer Product Safety Com-mission.

Parents should recognize that car seats and swings should not be used as sleeping areas for children. Consult with a pediatrician about safer ways to help kids get some sleep.
