The current Perak Sultanate traces its origins to Sultan Muzaffar Shah, the eldest son of the last Sultan of Melaka. Its rich tin deposit has always been the reason for outside threats to its sovereignty. In 1641, the Dutch attempted to establish a monopoly of the tin trade in Perak by building forts on Pangkor Island and at the estuary of the Perak River. The attempts, however, were in vain. In the 18th century, Perak faced threats from the Bugis and the Thai. With the assistance of the British, Perak was saved from Thai domination in the 1820s. The discovery of tin by Long Jaaffar resulted in an influx of Chinese immigrants who came to work in the tin mines. In 1896, Perak became one of the four states that formed the Federated Malay States.

5 ORANG UTAN ISLAND, BUKIT MERAH

The Orang Utan Island or formerly known as Pulau Panjang covers an area of approximately 35 acres. The climate and vegetation closely resembles Borneo and Sumatra, the native home of the orang utans. The island, opened to the public in early February 2000, has 5 acres that has been set aside to allow the Borneo orang utans to free roam at this point in time.

The Foundation’s main goals for the Orang Utan Island at Bukit Merah are conservation, breeding, rehabilitation, research and education. The Foundation has endeavored to create one of the facilities for observation of orang utans in their natural habitat. At present, the Foundation has one of the most unique models of captive orang utan care, welfare and husbandry. The tunnel concept is especially interesting in that allows visitors to view the animals up close in their natural habitat while they themselves are protected in the safe enclosure. It is hoped that the facilities and habitat that have been created here will provide researchers worldwide with one of the best research environment to study the behaviour of orang utans.

At the Orang Utan Island, a rehabilitation program is drawn up for the young orang utans. They learn various tasks necessary for survival such as nest building, tree climbing and usage of ropes as substitute for veins and foraging for food in the wild. These young orang utans will be exposed to the natural environment and gradually introduced to the wild.

Ipoh - “The Limestone Wonders”Ipoh is also known as the city of Bougainvilleas, a name derived from the city’s abundance of the flora. The name “Ipoh” itself comes from the ipoh, epu or epus tree (Antiaris Toxicana), which once grew wildly here. Ipoh is located 205km north of Kuala Lumpur. The locals are mainly Cantonese and Hakka-speaking Chinese. The Kinta Valley was once renowned for its abundance of tin deposit. Dubbed the “City of Millionaires” due to the wealth created by tin, Ipoh is divided into two sections by the Kinta River. They are the Old Town and the New Town. Government offices, a commercial centre, the railway station and the City Hall are all located in the Old Town while entertainment spots, retail and food outlets are concentrated in the New Town.

Pulau Pangkor is the biggest of the nine islands found off the coast of Lumut. It is about 40 minutes ferry ride from Lumut, a coastal town which is about 84km from Ipoh. Its inhabitants are mainly involved in fishing and its related industries. Despite its small size, the facilities on this island are well developed; and accommodation is convenient and fairly priced. Traveling around the island, one will find the historical Dutch Fort (Kota Belanda), the traditional Chinese architecture temple, the Miniature Great Wall and the Satay Factory. These are places of interests that one should not miss. The Pasir Bogak Beach (the largest and most popular beach on Pangkor Island) along with its long stretch of crescent-shaped bay and abundant shady trees is an idyllic spot for picnicking. Opposite Pulau Pangkor is Pangkor Laut island. The most popular island resort in Perak, Pangkor Laut welcomes visitors with its serene, golden sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and cool, refreshing breezes. It is a popular venue for a wide range of water sports and fishing. Another nearby island, Pulau Sembilan is a fishing haven frequented by anglers.

Lumut

Located about 84 km southwest of Ipoh, Lumut is famous for its beautiful shell and coral handicraft. The economic activities in Lumut mainly revolve around fishing. It also serves as the departure point from the mainland to the island of Pangkor. The most famous beach in Lumut is Teluk Batik, about 6.5km from Lumut town. Another good beach is Teluk Rubiah which has a golf course nearby, the Teluk Rubiah Royal Golf Club.

9 TEMPURUNG CAVE

Located in the vicinity of Gopeng, 24km south of Ipoh, Tempurung Cave is believed to have existed since 8,000BC. Stretching over 1.3km, it is probably the largest natural limestone cave in the country.

Tempurung Cave is made up of five huge domes with ceilings resemble coconut shells. Each dome has different formations of stalagmites and stalactites. The domes also differ from one another in terms of temperature, water level, content of limestone and marble.

There are two types of guided tours for visitors to choose from. The short tours provide basic information of the cave. They are suitable for those who don’t want to get dirty or spend too much time in the cave. A walkway and platforms are available for the convenience and safety of visitors. Those who are more adventurous can opt for the longer excursions. The tours normally take two to 3½ hours through the underground river and come out on the other side of the cave. Visitors will be able to see various stalactite and stalagmite formations, many of which are still growing.

To get to Tempurung Cave, take the North South Expressway and exit at the Gopeng Interchange. Proceed south towards Kampar using the Federal Route 1. About 5km, turn left and visitors will reach Tempurung Cave that is another two km away.

Taiping太平

Taiping is located about 95km north of Ipoh. Formerly known as Klian Pauh, its name was changed to commemorate the end of the Larut War in 1874. The name “Taiping” means “peace” in Chinese. Taiping has a string of historical first that has made it into one of the oldest town in the country. For example, Taiping is the first town in Malaysia to have a swimming pool (1870), court house (1876), government office (1879), hospital (1880), museum (1883), prison (1885), malay school (1942), etc.

Taiping is one of the first towns in Malaysia to boast a lake garden, a zoo and a museum. The 62-hectare Lake Gardens is renowned to be one of the biggest and most beautiful parks in the country. Taiping Lake is a good place for jogging in the morning. You may also want to row the boat in the lake to have a feel of kissing by the gently breeze and shower by the warn sunlight!

The Taiping Zoo, located in the vicinity of the gardens, is probably the first zoo in Malaysia.

Taiping is also home to the country’s oldest museum, the Perak Museum, built in 1883. It was completed in 1903. Its four main galleries display a wide range of zoological and ethnological exhibits. It houses an impressive collection of archeological treasures like ancient weapons, aboriginal implements and ornaments that reflect Perak’s rich historical heritage.

Another interesting attraction in Taiping is Bukit Larut, the country’s oldest and smallest hill resort, which is about 10 minutes’ drive from Taiping. It is formerly known as Maxwell Hill, after George Maxwell, a British resident of Perak. Bukit Larut is approximately 1,035 metres above sea level.

Those who would like to relax in a fresh and cool environment will find Bukit Larut an ideal retreat. It is the perfect place for nature lovers and bird watchers. The Gunung Hijau Trail is the best trail for bird watchers. It spirals up towards the summit of Gunung Hijau, one of the peaks in the hills. From there, visitors will be able to see Taiping town and the Perak coastline, on a clear day.

Teluk Intan is a transit town for those who travel from Kuala Lumpur to the Manjung District and Pangkor Island using the coastal route. The pride of Teluk Intan is its dominating Leaning Tower. This pagoda-like eight-storey building, with a height of 25.5 metres, was originally constructed for a water tank in 1885. Today, the Leaning Tower has become a prominent landmark and a major tourist attraction for Teluk Intan in particular and Perak in general.
