Chiron (Khairan) enters into Vedic Astrology

I was doing some research work on Chirons influence in vediccharts. That will be put before the esteemed readers of this

Magazine.

Discovery and naming

Chiron was discovered on 18 October 1977 by Charles Kowal from images taken two weeks earlier

at Palomar Observatory. It was given the temporary designation of 1977 UB. It was found near

aphelion[9]

and at the time of discovery it was the most distant known minor planet. Chiron was evenclaimed as the tenth planet by the press. Chiron was later found on several recovery images, going

back to 1895, which allowed its orbit to be accurately determined. It had been at perihelion in 1945

but was not discovered then because there were few searches being made at that time, and these were

have gone down faint enough in the 1930s and did not cover the right region of the sky in the 1940s.

It was named 2060 Chiron in 1979 after Chiron, one of the centaurs; it was suggested that the namesof other centaurs be reserved for objects of the same type.

Physical characteristics

The visible and near-infrared spectrum of Chiron is neutral, and is similar to that of C-type asteroids

Chiron is a Chiron-type comet with (TJupiter > 3; a > aJupiter). Other Chiron-type comets include:

39P/Oterma, 165P/LINEAR, 166P/NEAT, and 167P/CINEOS. There are other non-centaurs that areclassified as comets: 4015 WilsonHarrington, 7968 ElstPizarro, and 118401 LINEAR.

Orbit

Chiron's orbit was found to be highly eccentric (0.37), with perihelion just inside the orbit of Saturn

and aphelion just outside the perihelion of Uranus (it does not reach the average distance of Uranus,however). According to the program Solex, Chiron's closest approach to Saturn in modern times was

in May 720, at just under 30 million kilometres. During this passage Saturn's gravity caused Chiron's

semi-major axis to decrease from 14.4AU to 13.7AU. It does not come nearly as close to Uranus;Chiron crosses Uranus' orbit where the latter is farther than average from the Sun. It attracted

considerable interest because it was the first object discovered in such an orbit, well outside the

asteroid belt. Chiron is classified as a centaur, the first of a class of objects orbiting between the outer

planets. Chiron is an SU object since its perihelion lies within Saturn's zone of control and itsaphelion lies within Uranus' zone of control. Centaurs are not in stable orbits and over millions of

years will eventually be removed by gravitational perturbation by the giant planets, moving todifferent orbits or leaving the Solar System altogether. Chiron is probably a refugee from the Kuiperbelt and will probably become a short-period comet in about a million years.

Chiron came to perihelion (closest point to the Sun) in 1996.

Orbit

Chiron in our natal charts points to where we have healing powers as the result of our owndeep spiritual wounds. We may over-compensate in these areas of life. Chiron, as awounded healer, first must face issues of low self-worth and feelings of inadequacy and

learn to rise above these issues. Because the wound goes deep, and we may work hard to overcome

the wound, healing powers are potent.

Chiron in Aries or the first house

In Aries or the first house, the sense of self has been violated in some way, manifesting in feelingsof worthlessness, and/or that nothing is ever quite good enough. The lessons of Chiron here are in

learning to assert yourself and to take appropriate action or initiative to remedy the situation -

appreciate yourself and others for who they are. Easier said than done, as you can tend to be selfsabotaging in your thought patterns. Remember your thoughts are powerful - you reap what you put

out.

Make a list of areas in your life in which you do feel worthy. Identify your true value and how that

value serves you and others. Don't stop listing until your heart opens to loving yourself. Also list the

ways in which other's "bad" treatment of you has helped you to learn how to assert yourself and tovalue yourself more. Again, keep listing until your heart opens to them, and to yourself, for

With Chiron in this placement, values and security are prominent issues in your life. You may feel

your heart may feel neglected and undernourished leading to poor self-esteem. You may over-compensate this inner wound by accruing money and possessions, or clinging to people in the hopes

that they can provide you with that missing sense of security. With Chiron here, you may also

mistrust your body, feeling that it will let you down, or you may perceive that your body is not

Chiron in Leo and the Fifth House

A fifth house or Leo placement of Chiron often suggests that the ability to be spontaneous and

carefree may be wounded. You may feel deep down that you cannot express the things that arewithin you.

You may have been prevented from expressing yourself creatively as a young child, and

subsequently suppressed this aspect of yourself, giving rise later in life to a difficulty in overcoming

feelings of inadequacy. Many times this manifests as a vacillation between wanting to be the star of

I believe that this is the natural placement of Chiron and as such manifests most powerfully.

healed...that you are somehow imperfectly made. The link between emotions and physical health isunusually strong. Control and an inability to feel secure in delegation of responsibility is another

ardently desire seems to be constantly disrupted by others or yourself. You may fear that you will
