    Summary & Overview

    TORAH

      Exodus 18:1 | Jethro's Advice

Exodus 19:1 | The Israelites Reach Mount Sinai  Exodus 19:9 | The People Consecrated

Exodus 20:1 | The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:22 | The Law concerning the Altar

Jethro  יתרו (Yitro), was derived from the

    Hebrew word ֶתר   (yeter) that

means "abundance". This Torah Portion iscalled “Abundance” and is linked to themajor event that happened at Mount Sinaiwhere Israel received the TenCommandments that took them formslavery, to a life of abundance.

Within this Torah portion we find thefollowing names; Moses, his wife Zipporah, their son El’izar as well as Aaron’s son, El’azar . We are going to look at thesenames and their meanings to see what wisdom we can be revealed. Moses’sname written backwards is “HaShem” that is another way to refer to YHVH, the  Name of the Father. Moses’s wife Zipporah ה ָו פ צ  is derived from ור פ צ (tzippor) that means "bird". These two names represent the Father and His Spirit.

El’azar    and El’izerאלעזָר  that are spelled exactly the same except forאליעזֶר

El’izer  has an inserted “Yod” (hand). - El’azar , the son of Aaron means, “Godhelps” and El’izer  , the son of Moses means, “my God is help”. Aaron’s son’sname seem to be impersonal compared to Moses’ son’s name is morepersonal. Aaron represents the High Priest that represents Y’shua in theSpiritual, that makes Him “impersonal” compared to Moses, who represents theTorah, that is more personal and tangible in our hands. The “yod” that isinserted, represents the Word in our hands making YHVH “my personal God” with Y’shua representing the Word or Commandments.

If we combine all these meanings of all the names and put them together, wesee the connection between three events. The first event is the science whereJohn the Baptist immersed Y’shua and the Spirit of YHVH came upon Y’shua in

the form of a Dove. Y’shua is represented by the two sons, Elizar and El’azar  with the “Yod” inserted (dove coming down representing the Spirit or Hand ofYHVH) to make Him more personal and tangible to man. Zipporah representsthe Dove (bird) that came upon Y’shua that is a symbol of YHVH Spirit. Moses’name backwards, is HaShem that represents the Father that said, “this is my

Beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased, listen to Him”.

All of this connects to the second eventthat is the receiving of the TenCommandments from the Mountain.Previously the “Yod” represented  theDove that descended from Heaven uponY’shua; now it represents theCommandments that “descended fromabove” (the Mountain) upon Israel. Thisconnects the Dove / Spirit to theCommandments / Word, making them

one. This is confirmed by the third eventthat is called the Feast Of Shavuot. Shavuot or Pentecost is the celebration ofthe receiving of the Commandments at Mt Sinai and is fulfilled by the outpouringof the Spirit that “descended from above” in the form of tongues of fire upon theBelievers in Messiah. The symbol of the tongues of fire that came upon thepeople are similar to the hand of YHVH engraving the Commandments ontablets of stone, only this time it is engraved on the hearts of the people. TheSpirit of YHVH writes the very same Commandments on the tablets of ourhearts so that we can have a new nature and a new life in Abundance (Yetro)following Him to the Land of Promise.

    Some facts regarding Commandments/Laws

Everything YHVH created in the Heavens and on the Earth is governed andcontrolled by His Commandments. Yes, every created thing has acommandment or natural law that governs it in order for it to fulfil its functionwithin balance with the rest of His Creation.

Q – Is the law of gravity good or bad?

Gravity can be perceived as bad from a child’s point of view when heexperience pain falling with his bicycle. But we as adults see gravity as a goodthing because we understand the importance of gravity in the sustaining of lifeon earth. In the same way, YHVH gave all His Commandments or Spiritual“laws” to ensure the sustaining of life in this world. Believers withoutunderstanding see the Commandments as a bad that takes away your libertyand freedom, but the more you learn about Him, the more youunderstand the importance of His Commandments and that theyare good and required to sustain your spiritual life. Imagine ifGravity no longer exists, what earth will look like? Water willfloat in pockets and people will levitate away from theirloved ones, and if there is a strong wind, you maylose everything you own being blown away.

Imagine a lawless world where everyone cando whatever they want.

There are over 40 000 Commandments or laws in Australia that you need toobey as part of your privilege to live in this land. The purpose ofCommandments is to govern the nation as well as to protect the people.Commandments are therefore good in their purpose and function and notnecessarily a bad thing. Imagine Australia without Commandments or Lawswhere people do whatever they want living lawless lives. There will be murder;rape, looting and no one will be safe.

There are 1,050 commandments in the New Testament and due to repetitions canbe grouped under about 800 headings or Commandments. Most of theseCommandments are references back to the Torah that came about through theteachings of Y’shua, Paul, John, Peter ect., explaining and interpreting theCommandments (found in the Torah) to the new Believers in Messiah in relation totheir lives. If you compare the Commandments found in the Torah that we can keeptoday vs. the Commandments Christian believers keep today, there is only a smalldifference in the order of 2-3% that is not held by Christians. The majority of theseCommandments Christians do not follow are the “visual reminders” called

Ordinances; the Tzit’tzits, Mezuzah, the Sabbath, Festivals as well as the foodlaws. The rest of the Commandments they do keep even if they believe theCommandments are abolished because of their “new nature” having theCommandments written on their hearts. Before we continue, we need to look at themeanings of a few terms in order to have the right meaning and understanding ofwhat the Torah is, what sin is and what sinless means.

Torah  – translated as Law in the English Bible. It actually means Instructions Inthe Scripture it is also referred to as the “writings of Moses” and consists of thefirst five books of the Bible. It comes from the root word “ Yarah” which means;“ to flow like water ” and “ to learn how to shoot”.

Sin - This is interesting because sinin Hebrew is defined as “missing themark”. Paul refers to the Torah asthe “ knowledge of sin” , and we needthe Torah to help us to hit the markevery time, not sinning. The conceptof water is also found in the “NewTestament” where the Word isreferred to as water (Eph 5:26). Towash with the water of the Word(Torah) is to cleanse yourself from

sin which is defined in the Torah(first five books of the Bible). This

helps us not to miss the mark or to sin, but to live a holy righteous life unto Him.(2 Tim 3:16)

Sinless Lamb - The idea of Y’shua being the Lamb of YHVH without anyblemish implies that He was without sin. Sin is defined by the Torah and revealswhat sin is. Without the Torah, no one would know what offend YHVH. If Y’shuawas without sin then He must have obeyed the whole Torah to be declaredsinless. We as His Disciples should walk as Y’shua walked, not sinningpursuing Holiness.

One, Two, Ten or 613 Commandments

A lot of people say that the Torah (63 Commandments) has been replaced by 1Commandments namely, love. Others think that is being replaced by 2Commandments namely, love God and love your neighbour as yourself.

Mat_22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great C ommand in the Torah?”(37) And Y’shua said to him, “ ‘You shall love

    י

     your Elohim with all

your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind.’ (38) “Thisis the first and great command. (39) “And the second  is like it, ‘You shalllove your neighbour as yourself.’ (40) “ On these two commands hang allthe Torah and the Prophets.”

Q – What Y’shua taught here having Matt 5:17-18 in the back of your mind?

If Y’shua said that the Torah is abolished and replaced by TwoCommandments, then He will be contradicting Himself. He stated that he came

to fulfil and not abolish the Commandments. The Ten Commandments consistsof two parts; the first half is how to love YHVH, doing this will strengthen yourrelationship with Him. The second set or heading of the Ten Commandments isabout your relationship with other people, how to love and live with ourneighbours. Y'shua underlined the two“headings” of the Ten Commandments, and Hesummed up in two fundamental concepts of lovefrom which the Two sets of FiveCommandments “hang”.

The Ten Commandments then make up the

“index” for the 613 Commandments. Weapproach the Commandments from the top with Love as the primary purpose orreason for the Commandments. Then the One Commandment of Love dividesin Two Commandments of Love; Loving YHVH and Loving People. Then theTwo Commandments divide into two sets of Five Commandments that givesyou more detail on how to do the two. Then these Ten Commandments arebroken up in further detail that forms the 613 Commandments that covers allaspects of a Believer living in the Kingdom under a King, namely Y’shua, justlike an Australian Citizen residing in Australia under the Australian Government. If you want to live in the Land, then you have to submit under the rule and Authority of that Land.

Psa 111:7-8  The works of His hands are truth and judgment; all HisCommands are true, (8) standing fast forever and ever; they are done intruth and uprightness.

    Consequences of Breaking the Commandments

All of YHVH’s Commandments have consequences and can either bepositive or negative. If you obey His Commandments, you will beblessed (positive), but if you break His Commandments, you will bepunished (negative). From our point of view, we see the

blessings as good and the punishment as bad. FromYHVH’s point of view, they are both the same, namely positive and both are good and given in love.

Q – How can bad consequences or punishment be good?

Punish is the Hebrew word “onesh” spelt sni “ Ayin, Nun – Shin”. i “ Ayen”

means eye and sn “nun-shin” spells “nash” that means “fallen back”.Punishment or consequences of sin are YHVH’s way to wake us up to say “see”(ayin), you have backslidden or fallen back (nush). Pain can be a good thing if ithas a purpose. A pleasant feeling is not necessarily good, and a bad, uncomfortable situation is not necessarily bad. What determines good or evil isthe meaning or purpose.

Q - Why is change painful?

One other meaning of the consequences of YHVH’sCommandments is change. His Commandments changeschange, and it can be painful, which can be perceived as bad. That is one of the reasons why people do not know what to do

YHVH’s Commandments because it is “painful” and involveschange. It is very pleasant to follow the flesh; to “go with”  Amalek and let him win, to allow the flesh to do whatever itpleases. Most people do not like change, and it is unpleasant tobe moved out of your comfort zone. To follow YHVH’sCommandments demands change from us. YHVH ask us notto walk in the ways of the flesh but to walk in “His shoes”,

following righteousness. This is painful to the flesh, and it feels like apunishment. YHVH does not see it as bad as we do, but as good because ofthe change it br ings in us. That is why His Commandments are “indexed” in lovebecause everything that comes from YHVH, is out of love for us and will bringcloseness between Him and us. In a similar way, love is transmitted back toHim as explained by His words to us, “if  you love Me, do My Commandments”.His Commandments is the medium of transferring His love to us and our loveback to Him. It is like breathing in and out that allows us to live, in the same waywe “breathe in” His Commandments in and “breathe out” obedience back toHim. That breath is His Spirit that allows us to experience His “Breath of Life”through receiving and obeying His Commandments.

The Ten Commandments Found in the “New

Testament.”  Since this Torah Portion is about the Receiving the Ten Commandments atSinai, we will look at the Ten Commandments from The Berit Chadasha or NTto show that they are still applicable to believers in Y’shua today.

    1. Exodus 20:1-3-The First Commandment

Then Elohim instructed the people as follows: "I am YHWH your Elohim, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. "Do not worship any other godsbesides me.

The first Commandment is to have faith in YHVH your Elohim and acknowledgeHim as the only God. He is the One who led you out of Egypt, and this relates to

    6/13

      6

the fact that believers are actually part of Israel and that they are brought out ofEgypt (sin and bondage) to be a light to the nations in theworld.

Eph 4:5-6 There is only one YHWH, one faith, onebaptism, and there is only one Elohim and Father, who

is over us all and in us all and living through us all. 1 Cor 8:6  Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live.

Rom 11:17   And if some of the branches were brokenoff, and you (Gentiles becoming believers), being a wild olive tree, weregrafted in among them (Israel), and became a sharer of the root and the

fatness of the olive tree with them (Israel),

    2. Exodus 20:4-6- The Second Commandment

"Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds oranimals or fish. You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, YHWH your Elohim, am a jealous Elohim who will notshare your affection with any other gods! I do not leaveunpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish thechildren for the sins of their parents to the third and fourthgenerations. But I lavish my love on those who love me andobey my commands, even for a thousand generations.

This is one of the most severe Commandments because of its consequenceswhen breaking it. Israel was scattered throughout the nations for breaking thisCommandment, and YHVH said that He would punish the children up to the 3rd and 4th generations making the consequences pretty dangerous.

Q - What is Idol Worship?

Idol worship is bowing down to a physical idol, but there is no real Hebrew wordfor Idolatry other than “avodah zerah” that means, “foreign service”. Anythingyou do as worship unto YHVH that is not prescribed or commanded by Him, isseen as foreign service or idol worship, even if it is done with a sincere heart. Agood example of “avodah zerah” is the golden calf worship Aaron introduced toIsrael.

Aaron, the High Priest of YHVH created an “image of YHVH” that looked like the

one of the gods of Egypt and had a celebration in honour of YHVH. YHVH didnot command this kind of worship; on the contrary, He forbid the making of anyimage of things He created.

We see another example of “avodah zerah” or “foreign service”  where thechildren of Israel were punished to the 4th generation. According to Gen 15:16 ageneration is 100 years and Israel went into slavery for400 years or 4 generations because of what Simeonand Levi did after their sister got raped. They defiledYHVH’s “sign of the covenant” as a means to revengetheir sister’s defilement and thus committed “foreign

service”  unto YHVH. They sinned by connectingsomething foreign “zerah”, by allowing Shechem, theHivite, to be circumcised for the wrong reasons.

  • 8/20/2019 Parashah 17- Yithro

    7/13

      7

Hivite comes f rom the root word “chavah”; that means –  ‘to live’. It also means‘wickedness’. People who are wicked are people without faith. Wicked is theword "ra-ah" that also means ‘to shepherd’   giving us the meaning of “evilshepherds” or “false teachers / prophets”. If you follow a false teaching you areengaging in “foreign service” and fall into the same trap as committing in Idolworship in the eyes of YHVH. That is why you need to make sure if you areworshipping YHVH in Spirit and in Truth, the truth regarding the way He wantsto be worshipped. If not, then you are exposing yourself and your children’schildren to the consequences of your sin.

Gal 5:19-21 The fruits of the sinful nature are obvious…idolatry… I warnyou as I did before that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdomof Elohim.

1 John 5:21  Dear children, keep yourselves free from idols.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him

    in spirit and in truth.

    3. Exodus 20:7-The Third Commandment

You shall not misuse the Name of YHWH your Elohim, for YHWH will nothold anyone guiltless who takes His Name in vain.

Q - What does it mean to take YHVH’s Name in vain?

Vain is the word “shav” that means, “empty, worthless, having no substance”, evil, vanity, falsely and to lie. Ifyou connect anything to YHVH’s Name that is false or

do things in YHVH’s Name that causes vanity, thenyou are taking His Name in vain. Examples of this isfalse teachers teaching false doctrines, saying thatthese teachings are new revelations from Him.

Another example is when people say that you canhave whatever you want, saying that YHVH willprovide all your desires, needs and wants, makingrich. This in itself is tickling the ear, saying thingspeople want to hear. This will lead them on a path ofvanity and their motive to following and serve YHVH isfleshly, thus taking His Name in vain, using His powerto “feather your nest”.

The simplest example of taking His Name in vain is to say that you followMessiah but live a worldly life, connecting fleshiness to His Name, talking thetalk but not walking the walk. He is Holy, His Name is Holy and so must Hisfollowers be, Holy!

Matt 6:9  "This then is how you shall pray: Our Father, who is inheaven, Holy is Your Name.

1 Peter 1:14-16 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you

had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so beholy in all you do for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Phil 2:9-11  Therefore Elohim exalted him to the highest place and gavehim the name that is above every other name. That at the name of YHVHis salvation (see note for John 17:11) every knee should bow, in heavenand on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Y'shuathe Messiah is YHVH, to the glory of the Father.

1 John 2:12  I write to you dear children, because you have been forgiven on account of His Name.

    4. Exodus 20:8-11-The Fourth Commandment

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shall you labour and do all yourwork. But the seventh day is a Sabbath toYHWH your Elohim. On it you shall doany work, neither you nor yourmanservant, nor your maidservant nor

your animals nor the alien within yourgates. For in six days YHWH made theheavens and the earth, the sea, and all thatis in them, but He rested on the seventhday. Therefore YHWH blessed the seventhday and made it holy.

This was the Second Commandment YHVH gave man in the Garden of Eden, not eating from the Tree of Knowledge was the First Commandment. TheSabbath day rest is intended and created for the purpose so that YHVH’speople can spend time with Him, eating from the Tree of Life and learning bout

“the Way of the Tree of Life”. This day is set apart and different to the otherdays where you have to work to earn a living. This day is so that YHVH can doa work in you so that you can grow into a more intimate relationship with Himengaging in studying and spending time in His Word. The Sabbath is also aprophetic foreshadow (just like the Festivals that also has Sabbaths), of theSecond Coming of Y’shua, where we as His Bride will enter into His rest in theSeventh Millennium.

Matt 24:20  Pray that your flight will not take place during the winter oron the Sabbath.

Luke 4:14-16  He (Y'shua) went to Nazareth, where he had been brought

up, and on the Sabbath day went into the synagogue, as was his custom.

Acts 18:4  Each Sabbath found Paul at the synagogue, trying to convincethe Jews and Greeks alike.

Heb 4:9  For there remains a Sabbath day of rest for the people of Elohim.

It was Y’shua’s custom to go to the synagogue on a Sabbath, and Paul taughtthe Jews as well as the Gentiles (Greeks) about Messiah from the Scriptures onthe Sabbath. The Sabbath existed from Creation, before the giving of theCommandments at Sinai and is a sign between you and YHVH of your

    relationship with Him.

    5. Exodus 20:12- The Fifth Commandment

Honour your father and your mother, so that youmay live long in the land YHWH your Elohim isgiving you.

This is the first Commandment that you willencounter as a child and the only Commandmentwith a promise. This Commandment is thetransition between the first four Commandments, how we love YHVH, and the second set of

Commandments, on how we love our neighbour. Firstly, this Commandmentrelates to YHVH, where we as Believers, who are His Children of YHVH, needto honour Him as our Father. Secondly, this Commandment relates to families, where children need to learn to respect and honour their parents. You will notbe able to do the next 5 Commandments, loving your neighbour, unless you

have learned to respect other people. It all starts in the family, having a goodrelationship with your parents, and then you will learn to respect YHVH and tohave a relationship with Him. Then it extends outside of the family circle, whereyou learn to respect and have relationships with people outside your family. This Commandment is all about respect that forms the basis of goodrelationships.

Matt 15:3-6  And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselvestransgress the commandment of Elohim for the sake of your tradition?"For Elohim said, `HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, `HEWHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO

DEATH.' " Eph 6:1-3  Children, obey your parents in our Master (Y'shua)45 for thisis right. HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the firstcommandment with a promise), SO THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU,

AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.

Col 3:20  Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this iswell-pleasing to Our Master (Y'shua).

    6.Exodus 20:13--The Sixth Commandment

    You shall not commit murder.

This was the Third Commandment YHVH gave man as aresult of murder, where Cain killed his brother Abel. This isthe first Commandment heading up the next set of 5Commandments on how to love your neighbour as yourself.Being the first of the five underlines its importance and yetwe dismiss it or not think that we as believers will never killsomeone else.

Q - What does it mean to murder or kill someone that may apply to us?

To kill someone normally involves taking and object and hit someone or take agun and shoot someone, but there is a deeper meaning to killing someone.

  • 8/20/2019 Parashah 17- Yithro

    10/13

      10

You can “kill” someone if you destroy someone’s reputation through spreadinggossip and lies about that person. This will cause other people to avoid thatperson, and he or she will become “dead” to the community. The Worddescribes words of slander to be like arrows that is shot from a hidden place sothat the one receiving the arrow of death, will not know who “killed them”.

Psa 64:3-4  who sharpen their tongue like a sword, they tread theirarrows, even a bitter word, (4) so that they may shoot at the blamelessone from a lurking place; suddenly they shoot at him, and fear not.

Rom 13:9  You shall not murder.

Mat 5:21-22  You have heard that it was said to the ancients, "You shallnot kill" --and, "Whoever shall kill shall be liable to the judgment." (22)

But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a causeshall be liable to the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother,

Raca, shall be liable to the Sanhedrin; but whoever shall say, Fool! shallbe liable to be thrown into the fire of hell.

Another form of murder we can commit is if we are angry with your brother orsister without a cause.

Q – What examples can you think of that fits this form of murder?

James 3:14-15  - But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition inyour hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdomthat comes down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

James 3:16 - For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will bedisorder and every vile practice.

Bitterness, jealousy and selfishness are the roots or origins of murder where wedo “vile practices” against our fellow man due to the evil that lurks in our hearts. This was the reason Cain killed Abel, and his death was the consequences andoutflow of these grievous things in Cain’s heart. Y’shua underlined this fact thatthe sin of murder starts with anger in the heart towards your neighbour and thatin itself, weigh just as much as the sin of physically killing someone.

    7. Exodus 20:14--The Seventh Commandment

    You shall not commit adultery.

Not to commit Adultery is the Commandmentthat is linked to the 2nd Commandment; not tocommit Idolatry. The Second Commandmentis to guard and protect your relationship withYHVH and this Commandment is to guard andprotect your relationship with your spouse. Both are covenant relationships, one isspiritual, and the other is physical, that are atrisk of these two types of sin. Both of theseCommandments are 2nd on the list of each of

the two sets of 5 Commandments, which makes them high priority. Rememberthe purpose of a Commandment is to protect people and relationships and toreveal the sin that can destroy the things YHVH created.

  • 8/20/2019 Parashah 17- Yithro

    11/13

      11

Rom 13:9  You shall not commit adultery.

James 2:11  For He who said, "DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," alsosaid, "DO NOT COMMIT MURDER." Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the Torah

Matt 5:27-28, 31-32  "You have heard that it was said, ̀ YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; but I say to you that everyone who looks ata woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in hisheart…

Y’shua raises the standard again; He takes the sin back to where it originatesfrom and calls that the “breaking point” of violating the Commandment, not onlythe physical act itself. He teaches us that we should guard our hearts becausethat is where all evil originates from and that the sin takes place in the mind.

The important thing to realise is that if you break this Commandment, you breaka covenant between you and your spouse that YHVH sealed through a

marriage contract. When YHVH chose Israel as His bride, He entered into aCovenant relationship with them, but when they committed Idolatry, they brokethe “marriage covenant” between them and thus breaking the 7th Commandment as well. For a sin to bear fruit, you have to cultivate the “seed” in your mind. This is why YHVH gave His Torah in our hearts through Hisindwelling Spirit so that we might live out His Torah in our hearts before itmanifest as sin in our flesh.

    8. Exodus 20:15--The Eighth Commandment

    You shall not steal.

Matt 19:17-18  And He said to him,"Why are you asking Me about what isgood? There is only One who is good; but ifyou wish to enter into life, keep thecommandments." Then he said to Him, "Whichones?" And Y'shua said, "YOU SHALL NOT

     STEAL."

Rom 2:21  You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself?

You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal?

Eph 4:8  He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will havesomething to share with one who has need.

To steal is defined by the act of taking something of value thatbelongs to someone else without permission. Stealing is one ofthe Commandments that is the easiest to break, especially whenno one can see you. Things like pirate software, music games, movies, these things are so easy to steal, and no one will know it

except you. Repent and get rid of those things, which you haveobtained illegally.

    9. Exodus 20:16--The Ninth Commandment

You shall not give false testimony against yourneighbour.

Matt 19:17-18  And He said to him, "Why areyou asking Me about what is good? There is onlyOne who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments." Then he said to Him,"Which ones?" And Y'shua said, "YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSEWITNESS."

Matt 15:19  "For out of the heart come evil thoughts… false witness, slanders.

Col 3:9  Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with itsevil practices.

To lie is to conceal something we do not want other people to know, forexample, our weaknesses and failures. You can mislead someone throughwords that are not true in order to manipulate someone. In a spiritual sense, liescauses false doctrines and teachings that keep people in sin and bondage. Thefirst sin was committed because of a lie when Satan confronted Eve, thuscausing the fall of man through twisting the truth. Lies are very powerful, andthe only way to defeat lies is to bring it into the light, telling the truth.

Mat_12:36-37   “And I say to you that for every idle word men speak, they shall give an account of it in the day of judgment. (37) “For by yourwords you shall be declared righteous, and by your words you shall bedeclared unrighteous.”

Lies, false witness and slander are all related and fall into the category of “idlewords”  because they originate from Satan, the father of lies. If you choose tofollow his counsel (lies), then you will reap his reward (torment), but if you followYHVH counsel (truth), you will receive everlasting life.

    10. Exodus 20:17--The Tenth Commandment

You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall notcovet your neighbour’s wife or his male servant or his

female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything thatbelongs to your neighbour.

Covet is the word that means - to delight in, beauty, greatlybeloved, delectable thing, delight, desire, goodly, lust, (be)pleasant (thing), precious (thing).

The First Commandment is about YHVH, knowing Who He is and having faith inHim. This makes it the most important Commandment. The LastCommandment is the second most important Commandment because it formsthe foundation for breaking all the other Commandments. Not to covet is theCommandment that is the “furthest away” from the First Commandment and willcause you to move the furthest away from YHVH. If you covet, you will murder, you will commit adultery, you will steal and you will lie.

The lust of the eye is behind all these sins, and that was what caused Eve tosin; she saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to theeyes. In other words, she coveted the fruit of the tree they were not to eat from.In the same way, we covet the things we are not permitted to “eat from” orpartake of and break the Commandment related to that “thing” we covet.

Luke 12:15   Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed. Aman's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.

Rom 7:7   What shall we say then? Is the Torah sin? May it never be! Onthe contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through theTorah; for I would not have known about coveting if the Torah had notsaid, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET."

Materialism is a sickness of our society, and most people fall into this trapwanting more or better, in order to keep up with the “Joneses”. People not only covet things, but they also covet through their fleshly desires and indulge

themselves in food, good times, parties and lust. We need to be led by the Spiritand not be enslaved by the desires of the flesh.

    Conclusion

Rom 6:16  Do you not know that to whom youyield yourselves as slaves for obedience, you areslaves to him whom you obey; whether it is of sinto death, or of obedience to righteousness.

You will always be subject to some form of authority,

and the one you obey is the one you serve andworship. People think they are free if they submit to noone. The problem with this is that they are actually submitting to their ownfleshiness and falls into the trap of coveting through fleshly desires breaking allof YHVH’s Commandments.

Joh 15:10  If you keep My commandments, you shall abide in My love, even as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

Joh 8:32  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Mat 11:30  For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

Rom 7:12  So indeed the Torah (Law) is Holy, and the Commandment is Holy and just and good.

We as believers should submit under YHVH and His Commandments andthrough that, obey and worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. His Commandmentsare not burdensome and are there to protect us from the evil that sin broughtinto this world. Do His Commandments as an act of your love towards yourFather.
