Fr. James Joseph SDB

Happy Feast of Saint Sebastian-A Reflection of Martydom

Jesus preached the Gospel of the good news, that God is restoring our broken world and all of us, through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Our Divine Savior. We who follow Christ, as pilgrims on this journey of life, amidst this world’s fleeting experiences of j o y s and s o r r ows , agonies and ecstasies, relationships and struggles do not travel alone. We have the vast company of the Saints and Martyrs, who give us courage, and provide good example and encouragement, in living faithfully in this world and to become victorious in this struggle. “Therefore, having so vast a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, and throwing off everything that hinders us, and especially our sin that so easily entangles us, let us keep running with endurance the race that God has set before us” (Hebrews 12: 1).

St. Sebastian was a martyr, who was put to death by the Roman emperor Diocletian in c. 287 A.D. A Christian Martyr, is a person who is killed for following Jesus Christ. During the early church years, this often occurred through stoning, crucifixion, burning at the stake or other forms of torture and capital punishment. The word "martyr" comes from the Greek word ‘mártys’, which means "witness." Martyrs were witnesses to their faith in Christ, and they proved their love for Him by the shedding of their blood, and sacrificing their lives.

Pope St. John Paul II, in his apostolic letter Tertio Millennio Adveniente (As the Third Millenium Dawns) quotes one of the early Christian Fathers, Tertullian (c. 155-240) “Sanguinis martyrum, semen christianorum,” (the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians). The Church of the first millennium was born of the blood of martyrs. Very often, many people, who read history wrongly think that it was due to the favors of emperor Constantine, that the church grew and developed. This is not true; but it was rather the "seeds sown by the martyrs" and the "heritage of sanctity" which marked the first Christian generations, which gave the church its miraculous growth. Today, as followers of Christ, we have the sacred duty not to forget the many nameless, unknown soldiers who laid down their lives for God's great cause, the spread of His Kingdom.

In over 2000 years of the Church’s turbulent history, the supreme trial of martyrdom has often been demanded of Christians, time and again down through the centuries. The holy martyrs of the first centuries especially live on in our memory. However, in the following centuries many others, both in the East and in the West under different circumstances, have shed their blood for Christ. The unfortunate occurrence of the rift (schism) between the Churches, does not make their sacrifice less precious! Martyrs are revered with particular devotion by the People of God, who see in them a living portrayal of Christ's Passion. St. Paul tells us that when we suffer for Christ any affliction, we truly share in His Passion for the sake of Christ’s body, the Church. “Now I rejoice in what I am suffering for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church” (Colossians 1. 24).

Martyrs are light for the Church and for all humanity. The blood of martyrs, as Tertullian said, is the seed of Christians. It is also a life-giving sap and the power of unity for the whole Church, the Mystical Body of Christ. Let us pray above all earnestly, that St. Sebastian and all the martyrs, who shed their blood for Christ, through their intercession may hasten the time of full communion between Christians of all denominations (Tertio Millennio Adveniente).
