Message from the Vice-Chancellor

The University is always concentrating on improving the academic standards and Introducing new

need based courses and thus involving in fruitful interaction with the society. Not with standing with these

we are now marching towards establishing our interaction with the corporate world in a big way. University

has already established “Department of Statistics: Consultancy Activity Cell” as a part of “University and

Industry Interaction Cell”. Through this cell the Department of Statistics is carrying out consultancy activities

with industries and research organizations. The Department has set an objective to revise/change the courses

and syllabi, from time to time, to meet the statistical and computational needs of corporate world. The M.Sc

Programme offered by the Department of Statistics is with this purpose. It seeks to shape, nurture, and develop

potential statisticians with well-equipped statistical and computational skills. Moreover, they are also trained

in hardworking, pro-active behaviour and positive thinking and action.

I expect from all our students to devote their time and energy to create awareness in the society at

large about valuable work being done in our University.

I am glad to know that last two years students were recruited in different establishments giving good

response to the placement brochure. I am confident that with continued support of various Industries and

let me express my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all those who responded positively for our placement brochures’, since

2004, and showed faith and confidence in our students, by providing suitable recruitments.

I am happy to state that our M.Sc. programme is finding necessary changes and improvements by considering

the suggestions that we received from the experts in corporate sector and in academics from time to time.

In today’s fast computational environment, training the statisticians in computational as well as statistical

skills is a challenging task. Moreover, providing expertise in using simultaneously several statistical techniques based on

complex data sets to meet a set of objectives effectively is an exigent job. The rapidly progressing globalization, fast pace

of technological changes and competitive corporate world has made corporate bodies to acquire world reputed quality

standards certificates. This has resulted in increased use of statistics at every sphere of corporate activities. We hope that

our trained statisticians will be able to meet such demands of the Industry and thus encouraging us to progress by

incorporating necessary changes in our academic activities as and when we receive feedbacks.

Brief Outline of Department of Statistics……..

The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1961. Since its establishment the

department made its name as one of the best teaching and research department in the

western region. At present the department is having seven faculty members actively

engaged in teaching and research.

About M.Sc. Programme:

The M.Sc course of the department is a four-semester programme spread over two years.

In the programme the students study 18 subjects along with practicals and a project. The

curriculum and course work of the M.Sc Programme have been carefully designed by taking

into account the UGC recommendations, availability of the staff with relevant specializations

and need of government and the corporate sectors in and around the township. Students are

offered two specializations :(i) Biostatistics and (ii) Financial Statistics. Along with the M.Sc

programme students are also allowed to take certificate courses in (i) SPSS (ii) Biostatistics and

(iii) Financial Statistics. The objective of these add-on courses is to provide opportunity to the

students to enhance their knowledge base to meet any statistical need of the employer.

The teaching method comprises of lectures, case studies, presentations, seminars, quizzes,

programming, software handling, and consultancy training and practical. The emphasis of the

teaching is on both learning the fundamentals and application of the techniques, by suitably

selecting from the statistical tool kit, for the data obtained through statistical consultancy

activities.

The students’ also carryout project work as a part of their study. In the project student

usually take up the problems assigned by the projects guides. At the end of the work they

submit a detailed report of the project for which they are evaluated for 100 marks. The

emphasis on the project is giving training from the collection of the data till the preparation of

the final report.

Training Received Through M.Sc Programme.

The students of M.Sc programme are given rigorous training both in theoretical

developments and applied statistics. They study most of the applied or application oriented

subjects like Stochastic Process, Multivariate Analysis, Sampling, Design of Experiments, Linear

Models, Reliability and life testing, Statistical Quality Control, Linear Programming and

Econometrics. This year we have opened up a Statistical Consultancy Cell. The cell approaches

the prospective customers and, through its wide publicity, it gets work related to statistical

analysis. These works are assigned to interested students with a teacher-in-charge for necessary

guidance. Thus, students get on hand training of data analysis. Apart from this, we have made

project work as compulsory in M. Sc. final.
