Colour

Rustic shades of brown offer the perfect backdrop for

brighter colours within the seasonal palette. Jewel-in-

spired tones offer a regal look; purple amethyst and

turquoise join with ruby red and emerald green. Eclectic

colour grouping is key. Inky pools of petrol blue, navy and

iron green bleed and blend together, whilst oily pearles-

cent finishes reflect a whole rainbow of metallic hues.

Gold, silver and bronze take on oxidised effects.

Print & Pattern

Christmas 2015 is heavily influenced by craftsmanship

and artisan techniques; intricate paper-cuts and lace

doilies inform finely detailed prints. Positive space is

balanced with the negative, as loosely tessellating motifs

form patterns that flow across the canvas.

Elaborate illustrations are made up of refined lines,

drawn with tattoo-precision and embellished with

tribalesque mark-making. Gradients and shading are

replaced with areas of stippling, while digitally created

imagery is cleverly distressed and textured to imitate the

aesthetics of lino printing.

Eye-catching typography unmistakeably communicates

the festive season, but also plays a huge part within

designs. Lyrics from well-known Christmas carols, joyful

seasonal greetings and humorous phrases are all made

up of decorative fonts, multicoloured and mismatched

together.

Texture & Embellishment

Natural materials continue to dominate the trends; kraft

paper, hessian and other eco-friendly materials feature

heavily, whilst tanned leather provides the answer to

trend-led finishing touches.

Colour

The season’s colour palette shows a subtle influence of soft retro.

Creamy pastels cover designs in a soft and dreamy ombré of colour.

Soft, warm pastels cover designs; dreamy Cotswold creams,

cornflower greys, feminine dusty pinks and almond whites. Colour is

sweet but not too sweet. This season’s colour palette basks in

summery warmth. Foxglove pink, sweet mango and coral give prints a

sun kissed glow.

Shades of turquoise and minty greens combine with succulent green

and citrons and soft metallics, such as antique and honeyed bronze

add a hazy dreamlike quality.

Print & Pattern

Designs are elegant, graceful and glitzy and lace envelops design in

intricate and feminine ways. Traditional lace is reinvented in contem-

porary ways, whilst broderie anglaise is given a graphic style update.

The season shows a hint towards Victoriana and romantic and

glamorous vintage style is glistened with modernism and contempo-

rary touches. See the photography of Romina Margherita A. Diaz and

the paper structures by Matt Shlian for inspiration.

Designs have a rebellious streak with Surrealist art and illustrations

providing inspiration for details. Unruly brush strokes disfigure

classical masterpieces to portray creative expression and unusual

pairings. There is also a retro feel to design work with soft abstract

shapes, classic checks and pinstripes adding twists to artwork. Lacoli

& McAllister’s design work plays on shape, colour and proportion and

captures the retro feel for the season.

Plant life thrives this season as leaves are magnified and digitised and

mix with fonts for a lively, overgrown feel. Typography comes in

various forms, from the organic handwritten style to the more

rounded, bold typefaces. Florals continue to blossom in a sweet array

of colour.

Texture & Embellishment

Glass pieces are dainty and pure and sparkle with

high-powered sheen and iridescent qualities. Glass

may also be light green giving pieces a frosted

appearance and a milky transparency.

Ceramic surfaces are enticingly tactile and appear

to have a sugar chenille coating with delicate and

distressed, embossed florals adding romance to

designs. See the white vases from Kinto.

Vintage treatments are looked towards for creating

imperfect beauty. Designs have natural flaws and

raw edges. See the work by Eve Lateiner for

inspiration. Structured polygon ceramic pieces are

dipped with glitter and astrobright shiny surfaces

are combined with matte finishes. Polka dot

stickers add further interest to designs.
