Most of us had come
with a dream to return
someday to our
motherland. That
remains a mirage. We
go through various
stages of immigration,
H1B Visa, then Green
Card and finally
Naturalization and
Citizenship. Milestone
changes, plan changes.
Returning becomes
difficult and finally
impossible. The Life
somewhat resembles
that of a lion that we
see in an artificial
safari.

In career anchors, all of us faced the ‘reality-
shock’ when we entered the corporate life
after college. This reality shock is nothing
compared to the cultural shock that we went
through when we had come to this country.
The accent difference is significant. Forget we,
even a person who has spent multiple
decades in this country, can still be identified
clearly that he is from India. Not only accent,
there are many in the list. What we call a bank
cheque in India, is spelt as ‘check’ here. On
my first day here, I had been to a nearby
McDonalds. Looking at the photos of the
menus, I ordered for a Crispy Chicken meal.
So far the conversation with Mc girl was
somewhat ok. She then asked, “here? To go?” I
thought I heard her correct, but was confused
and could not make out what was she asking.
After further probing, I realized and replied
her “I want to take it to home”. She told, “ok,
you mean ‘to go’”. Then, I gave her my credit
card for payment. She told “we don’t accept
card payment. Here is your check (gave me
the printout), please give me that five dollar
bill(pointing at the five dollar note I had in my
hand). It is called a ‘check’ what we know as a
‘bill’ for years in India. What we call “note”
(like a Hundred Rupees note) in India, is
called “bill”(like 100 dollar bill) here. Most
vegetables, including potato, onions etc are at
least double the size of that we see in India.
Here, cost of labor is high and therefore,
repairing goods is expensive and people
prefer buy a new one, trashing the old one.
Legal system in US is strong. There are
various unimaginable subjects that are law
suited in this country. We still fear what is
appropriate to talk or what is the right way to
act and we always keep in mind that any slip
may lead to a law suit.

Most of us grew up without any self ambition but were
ambitioned to study hard to become engineers, doctors,
teachers or lawyers. Our social acceptance was high if we were
good students. Very few of us had tried to listen to our hearts.
As a result, the creative traits were not cultivated. When, we
neared the 10th grade, our parents counseled us to study hard,
forgetting every other thing. Our creative and artistic traits got
subdued. When we look back, we watch programs on talent
exhibition in TV shows, we identify with those performers and
think, “I wish I tried this line….”. We feel “maybe it’s not the
right age, but what’s wrong in trying. We also want our children
to perform in front of the crowd and earn appreciation”. But,
there’s a need of a platform.
We formed a club, ‘BayBasi’, in Foster City, CA primarily with
Bengalis who came from Kolkata and live in Foster City or its
neighboring areas. Baybasi hosts multiple cultural events during
Durgapuja, Saraswatipuja and such other celebrations. It
provides this needed platform to the members and their family
members to demonstrate talents. However, because some of us
are unaware of our own hidden talents, we eventually try out
something that we never had in our capabilities. Sometimes, it
is like a situation of “Shashi Aditya”-meaning; portray the Moon
as Sun. We try ourselves or through our children with great
enthusiasm. Sometimes, it blossoms out the latent talent like a
pearl, the way it comes out of an oyster. These platforms may
give rise to budding singers or actors in future. The platform
offered, is so encouraging that even ‘Amalkanti’ could fulfill his
impossible ambition of becoming Sunlight. Amalkanti is a
famous character of a distinguished Bengali poet, Nirendranath
Chakraborty in his poem “Amalkanti”. Amalkanti was a dull
student who didn’t want to become a doctor or engineer or
lawyer, but sunlight.

Glossary:
Galvanized: Coated (iron or steel) with rust resistant zinc. Here it means brilliant enhanced appearance using cosmetics to or cover up. Locus: The set or configuration of all points whose coordinates satisfy a single equation. Here it means ‘track of movement’ Polarized: Rays of light made to the state in which all the vibration takes place in one plane or caused to vibrate in a definite pattern. Here it means ‘caused to behave in a definite pattern’. Critical angle: The angle of incidence above which no light will be transmitted out of the medium. Here it means looking secretly, that none would catch that you’re looking at something. Third law: Newton’s 3rd law of motion, an action has equal and opposite reaction. Coulomb: Unit of charge. Exergy: Available energy Ten power seven Erg: Erg is unit of energy. Ten power seven Erg is Joule. Here it means high energy. Inertia: Here means static inertia Angle of repose: The steepest angle of descent or dip of the slope relative to the horizontal plane when material on the slope face is on the verge of sliding. Here it means pause point Escape: Escape velocity means the speed needed to "break free" from a gravitational field without further propulsion. Here it means a high velocity of a moving person who can’t be followed. Decibel and pascal: Units of noise and pressure respectively. Amorphous: Non-crystalline, here it means not crystallized or shaped up or at random. Scalar: Value without direction and vector is with direction. Here it means ‘with choice’ and ‘no choice’ respectively. Young Modulus: Coefficient or degree of elasticity. Here it means ability of one’s endurance. Antigen is external protein in body which creates antibody and paratope is the antigen-binding site of an antibody. Here it means coexistence. Isotope: Atoms of an element with same atomic number but different mass number. Therefore, the chemical properties of isotopes remain the same. Here it means same of similar behavior. Entropy: Degree of randomness. Allotropy: Property of some elements to exist in two or more different forms, e.g., Carbon exist in form of Graphite, diamond and various others. Here it means different approaches of the same act.

Today our kids, in US, are growing
in a complete different
environment. Forget iPad or
computers, we didn’t even have TV
at home. We grew up hearing
stories from our parents, then by
reading books of Rabindranath,
Abanindranath and such other
writers. Our individual values and
beliefs were developed from those.
Today, our children are no longer
interested in their works . But the
same values are instilled through
cartoons, videos and animations.
Though, we know that these are
well researched and scientifically
developed for the children’s
learning, we still suspect if these
methods are appropriate. In our
times, our unwanted behaviors
were stamped out by punishment.
Today, the concept is different. We
used to feel a song but today, songs
are enjoyed.

Majority of Indians, who came
to the USA in the last decade,
rather since Y2K time, are the
software professionals
expatriated by Indian
outsourcing companies. Since
the time of Y2K debugging,
we have seen three
presidents - Clinton, Bush and
Obama. We witnessed
terrorist attack of ‘Nine
Eleven’, wars, dotcom bust
and various other economic
downturns. We have
experienced the drop in real
estate. Real estate was
soaring up in Bay Area and we
learned the term ‘Economic
bubble’. We experienced the
collapse of retail chains of
‘Good Guys’, ‘Circuit City’,
‘Borders’ and many others.
And etail business swept away
the retailers. Especially,
Amazon created the history of
making more than 25
inventory turns per year
compared to normal 5-6
inventory turns per year by
the other retailers.
