MET ADVENTURES

Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Sparsely populated, starkly beautiful, Mongolia beguiles travelers with her vast blue

skies, nomadic traditions, and traditional hospitality. On this Met Adventures trip, we invite

you to discover this ancient land on a 10-day exploration that includes a stop in St. Petersburg,

to see the extraordinary collection of Central Asian art at the Hermitage Museum.

We are delighted to have Denise P. Leidy, Curator of Chinese Sculpture and Decorative

Arts in the Museum’s Department of Asian Art, lead this program. Her engaging lectures will

surely enhance our journey.

Begin in Ulan Bator, vibrant capital of what has become one of the world’s fastest

growing economies. View the magnificent collection of Buddhist art at the Zanabazar Fine

Arts Museum; go inside the Choijin Lama Temple, an architectural gem; and tour the Bogd

Khan Winter Palace, home of Mongolia’s eighth Living Buddha.

Fly to Murun, in the Khövsgöl Province, to discover the ancient Uushgiin Deer Stones,

carved with images of flying reindeer, and sleep under the stars in a ger, or circular tent. Hike

along the shores of Lake Khövsgöl, then return to Ulan Bator to attend a performance of

traditional music by the National Ensemble. Conclude in St. Petersburg, where we enter the

Hermitage before opening hours.

For those wishing to spend more

time in Mongolia, an optional-five day

prelude is offered in the Gobi Desert.

We look forward to welcoming you

on this unique Met Adventure.

Sincerely,

Emily K. RaffertyPresident

Denise Patry Leidy, who received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, is the curator of Chinese sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum. She remains fascinated with the ways in which nomadic and

sedentary cultures interact and has explored these exchanges in exhibitions such as China: Dawn of A Golden Age (2004), The World of Khubilai Khan: Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty (2010), and Silla: Korea’s Golden Kingdom (2013). Dr. Leidy’s interest in the spread of religious traditions, particularly Buddhism, is reflected in many of her publications, including The Art of Buddhism: An Introduction to Its History and Meaning (2008), Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (with Donna Strahan, 2010), and the popular Traveling the Silk Road (2011), which she co-authored with colleagues from the American Museum of Natural History. u

NEW YORK Monday, June 30 & Tuesday, July 1

Depart New York on an evening flight to Mongolia, via Paris and Moscow.

ULAN BATOR, MONGOLIAWednesday, July 2

Arrive in the morning and transfer to the historic Ulan Bator Hotel, where rooms are reserved for early arrival. After lunch, depart on a city orientation tour. Surrounded by the Khan Khentii Mountains, Ulan Bator, or “Red Hero,” was established 350 years ago and became a major crossroads for trade and commerce between St. Petersburg and Beijing. The contrast between ancient traditions and the dawning of a 21st-century democracy is most visible here, where traditional gers and Buddhist monasteries coexist with modern high-rises. Visit the National Museum of Mongolian History, then continue to the Zanabazar Fine Arts Museum. Named in honor of Zanabazar, the first Buddhist leader of Mongolia and renowned sculptor, artist, and politician from the 17th century, the museum displays one of the world’s best collections of Buddhist art and artifacts, including many of Zanabazar’s original works. Our welcome dinner is specially arranged at the museum.

Thursday, July 3

This morning fly to Murun, capital of the Khövsgöl Province. Upon arrival, meet our drivers and continue to the site of the Uushgiin Deer Stones, some of the best- preserved in the area. Following lunch, continue to the site of the five Hyadagiin Deer Stones, some of which are an extraordinary nine feet tall. A stop will be made at a nearby ancient burial mound. Conclude the day at a rustic lakeside ger camp, where accommodations are arranged for two nights. A ger (also known as yurt) is a circular tent consisting of a wooden frame and felt walls that has been traditionally used by nomads in Central Asia for thousands of years. Dinner is at the camp.

Dr. Leidy’s interest in the spread of religious traditions, particularly Buddhism, is reflected in many of her publications, including The Art of Buddhism: An Introduction to Its History and Meaning (2008), Chinese Buddhist and Daoist Sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (with Donna Strahan, 2010), and the popular Traveling the Silk Road (2011), which she co-authored with colleagues from the American Museum of Natural History. u

Thursday, July 3

This morning fly to Murun, capital of the Khövsgöl Province. Upon arrival, meet our drivers and continue to the site of the Uushgiin Deer Stones, some of the best- preserved in the area. Deer Stones are ancient megaliths carved with symbols that can be found predominantly in Siberia and Mongolia. The name comes from their depic-tions of flying deer.
