Ralph Arthur Neal, 1925-1990 L. Goodwin

Everyone will be saddened by the untimely loss of Ralph Neal, who died suddenly on II May 1990, while on a lecture assignment in the USA.

Ralph was trained at King's College, London and always remained at heart a dedicated zoologist of the. old school.

He joined the Wellcome Laboratories of Tropical Medicine in December 1945 to work on the chemotherapy of amoe- biasis, in close association with Cecil Hoare and Clifford Dobell. He also worked with Old and New World try- panosomes and with leishmanias of all kinds, By 1958 he was Head of Proto- zoology and later, when the laboratories moved from Euston Road to Becken- ham, was appointed He.ad of Parasit- ology. He left to become Deputy Director of the Wellcome Museum of Medical Science in 1982 but in 1984 took early retirement to concentrate on his bench work, particularly the immu- nology of leishmaniasis, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine,

His work took him to many parts of Africa and South and Central America; he served on several expert committees of WHO, and on the Zoo Record com- mittee of the Zoological Society of Lon- don. He was a founder member of the Parasitology Group, which became the

British Society for Parasitology, and helped to found the Society of Proto- zoologists.

Ralph was widely known and respec- ted; his rather shy, retiring attitude con- cealed a tough, dedicated, determined scientist with very high standards. Kind,

considerate and helpful, especially to his technical and younger colleagues, he will be greatly missed.

Len Goodwin is at Shepperlands Farm, Finchampstead, Wokingham, Berkshire RG I I 4QF, UK.
