Unlike most larger communities in the South, the city developed with industry at its geographical center like many New England towns, and in homes you will see that area’s architectural influences, as well.

Located on Autauga Creek, Prattville was destined to become the “Birthplace of Industry in Alabama,” when Daniel Pratt selected the site to establish his cotton gin manufacturing company in 1833 – a company that went on to become the leading cotton gin producer in the world. Pratt was a New Hampshire native who grew up familiar with the industrial villages of New England, so when the architect-builder settled here to create an industrial village around his plant, he modeled the homes after those back home.

Heritage Park people sometimes call prattville the Fountain City because of its many artesian wells, such as the Gordon and kathleen Musgrove Fountain in downtown prattville’s Heritage park overlooking Autauga Creek.


iNduSTriAl-STrENgTH PlANSPrattville Partners LLC, a partnership

by Longstreet Capital out of Atlanta, is in the process of preserving and converting those now-empty factory buildings into a cool residential development in the historic heart of the city. The transformation is expected to begin by early 2013.

“The mill buildings are such a central component to our downtown both

historically and structurally,” says Joel Duke, Prattville’s city planner.

When founding the city, Pratt also set aside areas for businesses, churches, schools and residential areas within his new town. Property owners, in conjunction with the Autauga County Heritage Association, have preserved many of these homes and buildings that make up the Old Prattvillage area of downtown Prattville today.

established Prattville along Autauga Creek in the late 1830s, building his cotton gin manufacturing factory near the fall line to use the water for powering the machinery. This made the city known as the “Birthplace of Industry” in Alabama.

And still flowing through it all is what many refer to as the jewel of the city – Autauga Creek. Pratt wasn’t the first to see the creek as a liquid asset. Native Americans established a village not far from where the city is today, naming it Atagi (“water”) which gives the base to the creek’s modern name.

CrEEk FOr THE COmmuNiTyThanks to the hard work

of naturalists and community leaders, Autauga Creek has evolved to suit the needs of the community. Once a critical resource to industry, the creek today is enjoyed by kayakers and canoeists, as well as walkers and joggers on the trail alongside it.

The Autauga Creek Improvement Committee formed in 2011 with the goal of cleaning

up the creek and revitalizing the Autauga Creek Canoe Trail.

Committee President Iris Korthauer says the best things about the creek now are that it is gorgeous and free.

Thanks to the committee and the efforts of its members, the creek trail, which technically was established some 25 years ago, is now vibrant once again. Korthauer says the committee is working on putting maps and kiosks along the trail so people will know where to put in and get out of the creek. Creekwalk and Creekwalk Garden, just behind City Hall near downtown, are also vital elements to the future of the creek and the town.

In the 1830s, Daniel Pratt bought 1,000 acres of land to build a cotton gin manufacturing plant along Autauga Creek. Today, the DanielPrattHistoricDistrict covers 140 acres and includes 154 buildings.

Grand residences are also part of Prattville’s landscape. TheBellHouse, a two-story Queen Anne beauty that was completed in 1893, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. BuenaVista, a distinctive Greek Revival home, has attracted admirers for nearly two centuries.

The breakfast series, a partnership between Auburn university at montgomery and the Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce, brings top speakers to entertain and inform members of the Prattville chamber on a variety of subjects. The breakfasts are held at the Montgomery Marriott Prattville Hotel.

“Past speakers have included Drayton McLane, owner of Lonestar Plastics in Prattville as well as the past CEo of the Houston Astros; former LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens, who oversaw the annual Navistar LPGA Classic golf tournament in Prattville each September; and bestselling author Andy Andrews,” says Kathy Gunter, senior director of the AuM Division of Continuing Education. “The breakfast series provides a mixture of local, state and national speakers, and is a treat for chamber members. It is an excellent learning experience.”

A new superintendent now serves the 13-campus Autauga County Schools district. Spence Agee, a former principal at Prattville Junior High, is a third-generation educator with 16 years of experience in the teaching and administration field 25 years of military experience and earned a bachelor’s of science degree in education from Alabama State university. The district serves approximately 10,000 students in grades kindergarten through 12, with reading and math achievement levels consistently exceeding the state average. The system’s athletic programs are also highly touted in football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, golf, track and softball.

46 agencies in three key impact areas – education, income and health. In 2011, the organization served more than 140,000 people.

The largest United Way contributor in Autauga County is International Paper, followed by Publix.

“Thanks to a company match of 60 cents for each dollar pledged by employees, International Paper collectively donated more than $131,000 this year,” says Melody Colvert, director of the River Region United Way-Autauga County. “Publix pledged more than $51,000.”

Many of International Paper’s 500-plus employees volunteer with agencies that receive United Way funding, which gives them a personal connection.

International Paper also provides thousands of dollars in grants each year to local organizations through the International Paper Foundation. Through various giving programs, IP Prattville donated almost $80,000 to the local community in 2011, in addition to its employees’ United Way contributions and hours of service.

“Corporate philanthropy is important to International Paper because our employees are the reason for our success, and supporting the communities where we live and work upholds our promise to do the right things in the right way and for the right reasons,” says Susan Poole, mill communications manager at IP Prattville.”

its annual kickoff at the Prattville YMCA Willis Bradford Branch.

“This was the second year for the Bradford Branch to host this wonderful event,” Colvert says. “Alabama Power Co. employees volunteered their time to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for 200 people who attended. At our kickoff, International Paper donated 1,200 reams of copy paper to the Autauga County Board of Education. And Publix, Best Buy and community volunteers donated cases and cases of school supplies to our local school system.”

That kind of generous giving is common among Prattville citizens and businesses.

“This is a special community,” Forst says. “Our employees and their families take such pride in this region, and IP is fortunate to be a part of it.”

HISTORY AND PROGRESS MEET AT AUTAUGA

Liquid Asset INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH PLANSPrattville Partners LLC, a partnership by Longstreet Capital out of Atlanta, is in the process of preserving and converting those now-empty factory buildings into a cool residential development in the historic heart of the city. The transformation is expected to begin by early 2013.

“The mill buildings are such a central component to our downtown both

historically and structurally,” says Joel Duke, Prattville’s city planner.When founding the city, Pratt also set aside areas for businesses, churches, schools and residential areas within his new town. Property owners, in conjunction with the Autauga County Heritage Association, have preserved many of these homes and buildings that make up Old Prattvillage today.And still flowing through it all is what

established Prattville along Autauga Creek in the late 1830s,

building his cotton gin manufacturing factory near the fall line

to use the water for powering the machinery. This made the city known as the “Birthplace of Industry” in Alabama.

The Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce will be working even harder in the next year to help more people discover Prattville.

“Prattville is directly off Interstate 65 near the intersection of Interstate 85, and many motorists travel through this part of Alabama each year,” says Patty vanderWal, Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce interim president. “We want more of those motorists to visit attractions in Prattville, especially now that the economy is starting to turn around.”

Some of those attractions include mainstays such as the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill, plus the newly revitalized Autauga Creek Canoe Trail and the High Point Town Center retail plaza near I-65, for which a new leasing company has promising plans.

Meanwhile, the chamber focuses on its 750-800 members and maintaining its impressive retention rate.

“Membership has remained stable the past few years. our retention rate each year is more than 90 percent, and we are always attracting new members,” vanderWal says. “New businesses open often in Prattville, which is always encouraging to see.” by Kevin Litwin

The Smith-Byrd House is a bed & breakfast inn and tea room located in the Daniel Pratt Historic District. The bed & breakfast has two rooms, each with king- size bed and private bath. Your overnight stay includes a home-cooked breakfast the following morning. The tea room is open Wednesday-Saturday from noon until 5:00 p.m. and features a traditional afternoon tea menu with more than 100 varieties of loose tea to choose from. While reservations for tea are not required, we highly recommend calling ahead to ensure that we have seating available for you and your party.
