Orientation workshop for students of RIE-Ecoclub

Youth being both drivers as well as key target group, play a vital role as agent of change for environment conservation. With aim of tapping this potential of youth, CEE Jaipur team organized an orientation programme for students of Regional Institute of Education (RIE) Ajmer, before the Prakriti Mela. The orientation programme was a two day workshop which took place at RIE Ajmer from 13th to 14th December 2014.

The programme started with an ice breaker to help participants feel comfortable with each other. This was followed by a session on environment education through activities with the participants for developing understanding on how each element in the environment is interlinked. The session also helped to sensitize students about how our daily activities affect environment and how education process can aid to come up with innovative or alternative ideas which will in turn help in relieving the pressure on our environment, after-all small steps leads to big change. Post activity students were asked to think on the issues that are affecting our environment and group these into broad themes. While discussing, these issues were categorized in 5 themes: Water management, Biodiversity, Waste Management, Energy and Culture & Heritage. Participants were equally divided in these groups and were given an overnight time to come up with ideas for action projects relevant to their themes that can be done in campus and displayed during “Prakriti Mela”.

Next day teams were given the charts on which they drew their ideas and activities that they will be conducting. The team presented the action ideas in front of all other participants for inputs from them. Last session focused on project based learning, so as to facilitate the participants to link their actions with education process. The entire orientation workshop generated positive atmosphere regarding environment education among the students, who realized that they will have to start from their own to make a change.

Stalls of RIE at Prakriti Mela

1. Waste Management Group: The group identified proper disposal of waste as major problem in their campus. The group installed separate dustbins followed by an awareness drive on the issue. Their actions and ideas for using the waste as resource was displayed at campus and in their stall like compost pit, mud filled bottle bricks (eco-bricks), best out of waste like furniture out of newspaper roll, handmade sheets, etc.

main problem. The team developed information board about identification and medicinal use of plants. They also identified 35 species of bird and prepared a model depicting this diversity. Actions like replacement of bulb with CFL, switch off lights when not in use, etc. were taken. These actions were displayed in their stall along with models on star rating, emergency light, solar appliances, etc.

4 Water group: The group conducted survey on daily water consumption and action project on reducing use (quantity) and reuse of water. A model of dripping tap was displayed to reflect this action. In order to get to this model, they first measured a leaking tap, to understand water wastage in a day and then recorded it. According to their records, a leaking tap may waste around 70-75 L per day and a flowing tap when not in use may waste 90-95 L of water per day. Other ideas displayed through models were on rain water harvesting, ground water recharge, checking soil saturation level before watering plants, etc.

Output/Outcomes

Prakriti Mela, a national event is a platform for teachers and students from schools across the nation to participate and showcase the work done in the area of environmental sustainability and education.

The shortlisted schools are also a reflection of status of EE in India, this gave RIE and CEE some insights to develop new programmes and materials.

The event is successful in spreading the message of taking affirmative action towards environmental conservation and also the need of sustained efforts to do the same. The participants are examples of engaging students in project based learning as envisaged in the NCF 2005 and policy for EE.
