Reactions 1377 - 12 Nov 2011 S Saccharomyces boulardii Probiotic sepsis: case report A 34-year-old woman developed probiotic sepsis following administration of Saccharomyces boulardii [Ultra- Levure]. She subsequently died. The woman was admitted to a burn ICU for thermal burns over 60% of her body area. She was administered Saccharomyces boulardii 100mg three times daily though a nasogastric tube for almost 2 months to improve her digestive tolerance. Blood cultures identified a Candida species infection on the 29th day after admission, and a Klebsiella pneumoniae infection on day 55. During hospitalisation, she underwent multiple operations for her burns, and 2 weeks after the last procedure, she developed a high fever. The woman received antibacterials and supportive therapy; however, her fever persisted and she developed septic shock and multiple organ failure. She received amphotericin B liposomal, but she died on hospital day 98. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was identified from blood culture collected on day 95.
