It is with immense pleasure that I welcome the publicationof this small information booklet brought out by the Departmentof Telugu, School of Humanities. For a long time it has been afelt need, particularly, in the field of Indian Languages forsystematic Handbooks, Bibliographies and Abstracts to bepublished. Many years ago, Prof. S. Nagarajan initiated thisprocess in the Telugu department. Then the Department of Telugubrought out ‘Alokana’ a year-wise compilation of articles on Teluguliterature by different scholars in the country under the editorshipof Professor G.V.Subrahmanyam. Now the department hasbrought out this booklet of M.Phil./Ph.D. dissertations done inthe Department of Telugu since 1978 when the first researchscholar was admitted into this department. This was a task earlierattempted by Prof. R. Srihari, former Head, TeluguDepartment.This booklet has information on the Department ofTelugu which is one of the oldest departments in our University,having been established in 1985 after its earlier avatar as part ofthe Centre for Regional Studies in the School of Social Sciences.It also gives information on academic programmes of thedepartment, lists seminars organized and gives a directory ofthe Heads of the Department and the former and current faculty.Such a publication, I believe, will go a long way in giving visibilityto the work of the department. I commend it as an activity whichother departments in the School should take up. This informationBooklet will be a reference book for prospective researchscholars. Introduction:

The Department of Telugu in the School of Humanities,one of the oldest departments of our University, has beenestablished in 1985 separating the subject Telugu from theCentre of Regional Studies, School of Social Sciences.Telugu as a subject was there in Centre of Regional studiessince 1978, starting with Ph.D. programme and then M.A.was started in 1979. The M.phil. was started in 1980 andvery recently in 2006 integrated M.A. was introduced.

The main objective of the Department of Telugu is topromote studies in Telugu Language and Literature. TheDepartment undertakes teaching and research in Telugu withemphasis on various aspects of his torical and comparativestudies in language and literature. The syllabus for variouscourses is drawn keeping in view of the changing needs ofthe society in relation to language use, and the role of literaturein the society. An equal importance is also given for studiesin Classical literature and Sanskrit, along with interdisciplinaryapproach.

The Department has so far produced 111 Ph.Ds. and388 M.Phils., apart from a large number of M.As. OurDepartment is rich in terms of rare specializations at M.A.level like Aesthetics, Paninian Studies, Prakrit language,Epigraphy and Manuscriptology, Computing Telugu andMachine Translation, which are rarely, available in otherUniversity departments of Telugu.

Programmes of Study: The Department offers M.A., M.Phil.and Ph.D. programmes in Telugu.

The M.A. programme in Telugu is of four semesterduration with all the important areas of study. There are 3Core and 2 Optional courses in each semester totaling 20courses. All the courses are 4 credits each and the studentsof M.A. have to earn 80 credits to get the Degree. The coursesare designed with an emphasis on the all round developmentof the personality of the students with an adequate importanceto job opportunities. The courses provide a wide range ofspecializations such as classical, modern and folk literatures,literary criticism and aesthetics, traditional grammar, Telugulinguistics, computer application to Telugu language, andmass media.

The M.Phil. Programme is of two semester durationwhich includes course work of 16 credits and dissertation.

The Ph.D. programme is entirely a research programmetowards studies in classical and modern Telugu literature,comparative literature and Language studies. Thisprogramme will normally extend over a minimum of two yearsfrom the date of confirmation of admission. The nature of theprogramme is individually designed for each candidate butinvariably includes course work of 12 credits and a thesis onthe approved topic under faculty guidance.

Entrance Examinations

M.A. entrance examination consists of 100 multiplechoice objective type questions of one mark each to beanswered in OMR sheet in the areas of classical and modernworks and authors, grammar, chandas, alankaras, Andhra

culture and some related general knowledge based ongraduate level. There is no negative mark.

M.Phil. entrance examination consists of 75 objectivetype questions at post graduation level of one mark each tobe answered in OMR sheet. The questions will be in the areasof classical and modern literature,linguistics and history ofTelugu Language and Literature, grammar, chandas,alankaras, literary criticism, folk literature, dramaturgy,aesthetics, literary works, authors, basic Sanskrit knowledge,General Knowledge etc. There is no negative mark. Thecandidates who qualified in the written test have to attendoral test for 25 marks.

Part ‘A’ Ph.D. entrance examination consists of 25objective type questions of one mark each in the areas ofclassical and modern literature, linguistics and history ofTelugu Language and Literature, grammar, chandas,alankaras,literary criticism,folk literature, dramaturgy,aesthetics, literary works, authors, basic Sanskrit knowledge,General Knowledge etc. There is no negative mark.

Part ‘B’ consists of a) problems concerning the particulararea of research like classical literature, modern literature,grammar, literary criticism, language and folk literature (15marks); b) preparation of research design, detailed synopsisof a given topic (15 marks) and c) literary appreciation orlinguistic analysis of one literary piece out of two (one fromclassical and one from modern age) (20 marks) (Total 50marks). The candidates who qualified in the written test haveto attend oral test for 25 marks.
