Staple: short fibers (ranging from <1” to a few inches)

o All natural fibers (except silk) are staple fibers

o Manufactured fibers can be cut into staple fibers

Filament: long continuous fibers extending for great lengths

(several hundred yards)

o Silk is the only natural filament fiber

o All manufactured fibers are produced as filament fibers

Manufactured staple fibers are fibers cut so that they can be processed the same way as staple fibers such as cotton or wool, or when they have to be blended with other short fibers. Filament fiber is “a fiber of an indefinite or extreme length such as found naturally in silk. Manufactured fibers are extruded into filaments that are converted into filament yarn, staple, or tow” (Source - Dictionary of Fiber and Textile Technology).

Fineness – Coarse wool fibers are typically used for rugs and carpets, whereas fine cashmere or merino wool fibers are often used for apparel. In the United States, denier is used to specify fiber fineness. Microdenier fibers are very fine fibers. Fibers used for apparel typically range from <1 denier (microfiber) to about 7 denier, and carpet fibers are approximately 20 denier. Note: Tex is commonly used in countries that use the metric system.

Tenacity is measured in a manner similar to fabric strength. The fiber is pulled in an Instron or similar instrument, along its length. This is a tensile test, determining the force required to break the fiber when it is pulled apart along its length. Because fibers vary in diameter, the force required to break the fiber is divided by the diameter so that we compare the fibers on an equal size basis.
