God’s Incarnation and His Divine Plays

God incarnates and conducts His divine plays. The devotees singing

the glories of those divine plays remain ever blissful. This cannot take place

without incarnating. Reflection and talks of God continue on, His divine

stories and play continue on. This is possible only due to His incarnation on

earth. Then while singing the praises and glories of the Lord, devotees are

able to cross this ocean of worldliness and continue to stay afloat. God

recognizes the fundamental nature, therefore He incarnates in this world and

engages in divine play, and for this same reason the saints and great souls

are engaged in talks about God.

Tava kathaamrutam taptajeevanam kavibhireeditam kalmashaapaham |

Shravanmangalam shrimadaatatam bhuvi gunanti te bhooridaa janaah ||

(Srimad Bhagwat 10/31/9)

Those who talk about Your nectar filled stories, listen to them, think of

them, they are "bhooridaah." They are the kind to give a lot, so they are both

givers and takers. Let us say that they give to the listeners and

simultaneously listening they take in. The listeners are benefited, then are

the speakers not be benefited? Surely they are.

Significance of the Awakening of Love

In many places it has been said that the fruit of visiting holy places is

quite run of the mill, greater than fasts is moderation of sense organs and

greater than sense moderation is worship and devotion of God and greater

than that is love of God.

Dharmah swanushtih punsaam vishvaksenakathaasu yah |

Notpaadayeh yadi ratim shram eva hi kewalam ||

The occupational activities a man performs according to his own position are

only useless labor if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the the

Lord (Srimad Bhagwat 1.2.8).

Even on proper exercise of Dharma, if there is no awakening of love in

men's heart towards the divine plays and stories of the Lord, then it is sheer

labor and exertion only.

'For persons seeking their salvation I have said mentioned three yogas,

three paths or Disciplines ­ Jnanayoga (Discipline of Knowledge),

Karmayoga (Discipline of Action) and Bhaktiyoga (Discipline of Devotion).

Besides these three, there is no other path for salvation." (Shrimad

Bhagavata 11/20/6)

In fact, every human being is an aspirant. The reason that the being,

while wandering about in eighty four lac forms of life, has been bestowed

upon this human body only to attain salvation. The structure of the human

body is not really a man, but a man is he who can discriminate between the

real and the unreal, what ought to be done and what ought not to be done.

This discrimination is beginningless and has been bestowed upon a man by

God. By attaching importance to discrimination a man may become

Jnanayogi, Karmayogi or Bhaktiyogi and can easily attain salvation. The

body which is acquired and lost is not called a man. The body is a means to

perform an action and its use is only to serve others. But when he regards

the body, objects, ability and power etc., which are acquired and lost as his

and for him, then he is not a Yogi but a Bhogi (pleasure seeker). A

pleasure­seeking person suffers himself and causes suffering for others

because it is a rule that a sufferer causes others to suffer.

World is the first Incarnation of God

It has been said that his world is the first incarnation of God ­

"Adhyovataarah purushah parasya"( Srimad Bhagavata ­ 2/6/41).

The first manifestation of the Supreme is the Purusha (cosmic being).

One God becomes many and by shedding multitude becomes one form. He

remains one in spite of being many. Whether He remains one or becomes

many, it is His will, His Lila (divine play). What difference does it make, if out

of the gold many ornaments are made and again many ornaments become

that one gold , or from sugar (in liquid form) hundreds of toys are made and

again the toys become the one sugar (when melted) ?

Similarly, whatever God (Supreme Consciousness, Divinity) becomes, what

difference does it make? The ‘tattva’ (essence) is only one and shall remain

one only. Except that one ‘tattva’ (essence) nothing else ever existed,

nothing will ever exist and nothing can ever exist. Only one God (Supreme

Consciousness) was there, only one God is there and only one God will

remain.

That one God Himself, taking on the form of the lover and the lovable,

engages in divine love play (Prem Lila). Human life attains perfection

(completeness) in attaining that ever increasing (increasing every moment)

divine love (of God).

God and Saints, the Eternal Well­wishers of All

It has been said about saints, that they are the disinterested friends of

all beings (Srimad Bhagavatam 3/25/21) .

Titikshavah kaarunikaah suhrdah sarvadehinaam |

Saints are forbearing, compassionate and composed; they are friendly

to all living beings and inimical to none

A disinterested friend is he who has the sentiments of seeing towards

the welfare of others and renders service to them. He does not look towards

what the other person does, how he does, whether he listens or not, whether

he is favorable or unfavorable towards him. The method of serving them may

vary. Just as if someone is a thief, a robber then the way to serve him would

be by beating him up. The point is that you do so in order to reform them, to

do good to them, to lead them to salvation. Don’t you slap your son when he

disobeys you? Do you have animosity towards him at that time? In fact you

slap him, because you love him very much. God also adopts such a

reformative method. As a woman that is pleased with the children playing,

gives them sweets, but if they misbehave, she slaps

only her own son. Similarly if God’s ordinance seems to be unfavorable to

you, it means that he loves you very much. He regards you as His very own.

ALL IS GOD

It is said in the Srimad Bhagavatam ­

Nareshvabheeshnam madbaavam punso bhaavayatochiraat |

sparsgisiitaaturaskaaraag saahankaara viyanti hi ||

(Srimad Bhagavatam 11/29/15).

"When a devotee holds that all men and women are God's manifestation;

when he beholds Me in them, then very quickly he becomes totally free from

evils such as jealousy, complaining spirit, and other defects including ego."

(Srimad Bhagavatam 11/29/15).

An aspirant should have a feeling of the presence of God in all beings. If for

some reason, he is unable to have this feeling, then another way is that

mentally he should make an apology for the absence of this feeling. There is

no need to talk about this feeling or to publicize to others. We have to serve

this world with that which belongs to God (this body, mind and speech). We

have to serve God, regarding the world as God's divine form. Then "All is

God" is realized easily, as this is not a new learning. It requires no studying,

no austerities, no effort, no spending of money. All can realize this. If by

mistake, we consider a person bad, then we should seek their pardon or

tender mental apology. Then we should pray to God, "Oh my Lord! I must not

forget ­ that You are Everything. Let me realize this by Your grace!"

In Srimad bhagawat, the Lord takes the worldly view and says;

Kim bhadram kimbhadram vaa dvaisyaa vastunah kiyat |

Vaacho ditam tadnrutam manasaa dhyaatameva cha || (11/28/4)

"All the things in the world can be referred to by sound, and conceived

mentally, therefore these are all unreal. When there is nothing like duality,

then how to differentiate between right and wrong?"

Further from the Almighty's standpoint, it has been said

Manasa vachasaa drushtayaa grhyatenairppenidriyaih |

Ahameva na mattonyaditi budhya dhvamanjasaa || (11/13/24)

Through the mind, speech, and other senses¥, whatever is perceived, all that

is Me and beyond Me there is nothing else you should quickly understand i.e.

accept this doctrine. ¥Here, "manasa" means the mind, "Vachasa" refers to all organs of action and "drstyaa" refers to

all the senses.

Karmayog in Srimad Bhagavata

In Srimad Bhagawat, Karmayog has been indicated as an independent

spiritual discipline and a means to attain the Supreme ­

Svadharmastho yajan yajainaashih kaam udhavah |

Na yaati swarganarakou yadhyanyanna samaacharet ||

(Srimad Bhagavata 11/20/10)

"He who remains established in his Dharma and renounces desires for

sense pleasures, and through his dutiful actions worships and remembers

the Lord, and he who does not do any actions with a selfish motive, he does

not go to either hell or heaven, that is, he is freed from the bondage of

karma."

Asminlloke vartmaanah svadharmasthonadha shuchih |

Gyaanam vishudhmaapnoti madbhaktim va yudhruchyaa ||

(Srimad Bhagavata 11/20/11)

The karmayog who is established in his Svadharma, he while performing

all his duties and conducting himself in this world, he becoming freed from

sins and virtues, without any effort, he attains the Supreme state (Supreme

Knowledge) or Eternal Love (Divine Devotion)".

May all be Served

Any beings in this world, whether movable or an immovable creatures, they

are all our family. It has come in the scriptures that just as the people living in

our home are part of our family, similarly those ants, flies, mice etc. that are in

our house are also our family members only. They too consider this home as

their home. The birds that make nests in those houses, they do not let other

birds stay there. Think about this, within a house there are so many houses !

Therefore to consider the house as our house alone and to do work only for

our own house is animal nature, not human nature.

It has come in the Bhagawat to give up animal intellect ­

"pashubudhimimaam jaahi" (Srimad Bhagwat 12/5/2).

To consider what is beneficial to all as being beneficial for us is human

intellect.

Nowadays, the main reason for the delay in spiritual progress is that you are

exerting your individuality and only desiring your own welfare, in other words,

you are always maintaining your individuality, your defined separateness.

May I attain salvation, may I gain pleasures, may I be benefited, may what I

want happen ­ we do not leave such sense of individuality, such a sense of

belonging to one country. You adopt the nature of animals and then work

according to that very same nature.

God has not created man for His enjoyment, nor for engaging man in worldly

pleasures, nor for ruling over Him. Rather He has done this, so that man

loves Him, and He loves man, and man calls Him his very own, and God

calls man His very own; and man looks towards God, and God looks

towards man ! It means that God does not make man his servant “das”

(dependent), rather He makes man like Himself, and respects man like

Himself. Therefore God hesitates to give His devotion, because in devotion,

man becomes God’s servant. It has therefore come in Srimad Bhagavata ‒

मित ददात कहचम न भितयोगम । (ीमभा॰ ५ । ६ । १८)

Muktim dadaati karhichitsma na bhaktiyogam |

(Srimad Bhagavatam 5/6/18)

He bestows now and then (even) final beatitude on those who worship Him;

but He rarely (i.e. in very rare cases) grants the boon of loving devotion (to

His feet).

In other words, at times, God gives liberation, but He rarely gives the yoga

of devotion.

God’s Nature Descends on His Devotees

God's nature descends on His devotees and therefore a devotee having

the inner feeling of the presence of God in all, is friendly and compassionate

to all beings, without any selfish motive, "Suhrdaha sarvadehinaam" (Srimad

Bhagavata 3:25:21), God is good hearted affectionate friend of all beings

"suhrdam sarvabhootanaam" (Gita 5:29). Therefore devotee is naturally

friendly and affectionate towards all beings.

"Hetu rahit jag jug upkaari, Tumh tumhaar sewak asuraari" (Manasa

7:47:3).

He is friendly even to those who are mean to him, because he holds

that whatever is happening is for his welfare, by the sweet will of God.

Moreover he is of the belief that those who are harming him, deserve special

respect as they are destroying his past sins by becoming the instrument, like

the postman in only the instrument in delivering a letter bearing bad news.

Therefore in a very special way, the bearer of bad news is deserving of

respect.

Salvation and Guru

Salvation is only possible when you follow the path shown by a real saint and in that case he is your Guru. Saint Dattatreya has mentioned about his twenty-four Gurus in Srimad Bhagawat.

Prithvivaayuraakaashmapognischndrama ravih |

kapottojagarah sindhuh patango madhukrud gajah || madhuhaharino meenah pingala kurarorbhakah |

kumaari sharkrut sarp oornanaabhih supeshakrut || (Srimad Bhagavata 11/7/33-35)

The earth, the air, the sky, water, fire, the moon and the sun, the dove, deer, the fish, Pingala (a courtesan), the osprey, the infant, the maiden, the forger of arrows, the serpent, the spider, and the Bhrnga (a kind of wasp) - these twenty-four have been accepted, O’ King, by me as preceptors. From the conduct of these I have learnt all that I had to learn in this life for my good. (Srimad Bhagavata 11/7/33-35) It clearly establishes that a person can attain salvation from teachings of any noble soul. Therefore having a Guru is not as important as following the noble teachings. When anybody's teachings help us to attain salvation, he becomes our Guru even without declaring so. On the contrary if we have a Guru but we do not follow his teachings, it amounts to be a sin and offence and it will not lead us to salvation.

True Humanity

To be happy in one's own happiness and sad in one's own sadness is

beastliness, while to be happy in others' happiness and sad in others'

sadness is humanity.

On being moved with the sufferings of others, man thinks of relieving the

sufferers of their sufferings. Just as he spends money to relieve himself of

his pain, similarly, he will be willing to spend money to relieve others off their

sufferings. He will not be able to hoard too much money! Even if it is

accumulated, he will not remain attached to it, by thinking that it belongs to

others. It is therefore mentioned in the Bhagavata ­

Yavad brhiyeta jatharam taavat svatvam hidehinaam |

Adhikam yo'bhimanyeta sa steno dandamarhati ||

(Srimad Bhagavata 7/14/8)

That much and not more, constitutes the rightful due of living beings, with

which their belly may be filled (their body and soul may be kept together). He

who claims more may be a thief and deserves punishment.

A man is authorized to possess only the bare necessities of life. It means that

the food which satisfies his hunger, the water which quenches his thirst, the

clothes and house which are necessary for the bare maintenance of his body,

are his. One who lays a claim to anything else besides these bare

necessities of life is a thief and will be punished. He may say that he has not

got these from somewhere else, these are his own. But how are they his?

Did he bring even a single thing with him when he was born? Will he carry

even a single coin with him when he dies? Therefore all the extra things that

he possesses, belong to those who have a shortage of those things. He who

is sad with the sadness of others, never hankers after pleasure and

prosperity. His heart is filled with compassion which provides him with such a

relish or joy which cannot be provided by mundane pleasures.

Question and Answers related to Srimad Bhagavata

Question: In Srimad Bhagavata, God said that He is following behind His

devotees, wishing that a speck of dust from their feet touches Him, so that He

will be purified; So what is this thing about God getting purified ?

Answer: Sinners, people who engage in good deeds, pure ­ impure all are

within the realm of God. All sinners are in God, therefore their impurity is

God's impurity, and their purity is God's purity. The point is that the dust from

the feet of the devotees (they remain within the realm of God) can purify even

the sinners.
