DIFFERENT SYSTEMS FOR THE COLLECTION OF

METHANE FROM A LANDFILL

WHAT IS LFG?

LFG commonly known as Landfill gas, is created from the decomposition of organic matter in a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill.

GAS OF OUR CONCERN

The important part of landfill gas is Methane which is used for different purposes in our daily life.

Methane 47.4%

TYPES OF SYSTEMS FOR COLLECTION ON THE BASIS OF LANDFILL

Active collection system.

Passive collection system.

PASSIVE COLLECTION SYSTEM

Passive gas collection systems use existing variations in landfill pressure and gas concentrations to vent landfill gas into the atmosphere or a control system.

These systems can be installed during active operation of a landfill or after closure.

ACTIVE GAS COLLECTION SYSTEMActive gas collection systems remove the landfill gas

under a vacuum from the landfill or the surrounding soil formation, with the gas being literally pumped out of the ground.

These collection systems are considered the most effective means of collection.

Active gas collection systems include vertical and horizontal gas collection wells similar to passive collection systems.

SYSTEM TYPES ON THE BASIS OF EXTRACTION METHOD

Installing methane extraction wells• Methane gas extraction wells are constructed by using

a drill rig to install boreholes.

• typically at least 24 inches in diameter, into the landfill to remove the trash and allow for installation of a well screen and casing.

• Boreholes more than 100 feet deep are common.

COLLECTING AND CONVEYING METHANE

• If the landfill is of substantial size and the anticipated quantity of methane precludes or if the gas will be used for other purposes, a series of extraction wells is installed which convey gas to the main station.

LEACHATE COLLECTION AND PUMPING

• If the piping can’t be installed , then we install a leachate sump and pump on any low spots.

• The sump is generally made of the same material as the piping, with HDPE the most common.
