Introduction…

• Being a self-driven, motivated and a visionary individual, I have been very passionate about succeeding in life. I feel that over the years, I have gained enormous professional experience working with different kind of people in different kind of environment and circumstances, both home and abroad. • Additionally, being a very good team player,

dealing with both staff and public alike I have always prioritized on individuals needs and also adapted my behaviour in order to be on their top of their mind.

• Born in 1975 in the small Porsha Village of Naogaon District, Barisal to the Shah Family that bears a rich family history and tradition attached to its ancestry dating back to as early as the 15th century. During 1600s, Persian settlers started to migrate to the Barisal region and are strongly linked to the present Shah bloodline. The Shah Family history goes as back as early as 400 years.

• However, the Chowdhury title was given by the British during their rule in the sub continent because of the massive property possession of the Shah Family.

• As of now there are more than 2000 residents in the village and almost everyone is attached to the Shah bloodline by some means.

• With a very rich cultural heritage attached to the Shah Family, they represent the majority of the region. They are also well known for their very kind hospitality and also famous for special delicacies only unique to the area. The Shah Family has played a significant part in the economic development in the area since their early inception in the region.

Family History…

Page 4: Shah Profile

• Shah Family has been politically involved on many instances in Bangladesh since its independence in 1971, and possesses substantial political roots with Bangladesh Awami League. • Most notably, two of my first uncles Dr. Bashir

Chowdhury and Mr. Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, both were Member of Parliament and were very close to the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. • My uncles also had the privilege to have seen

the childhood of our Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Political Background…

Page 5: Shah Profile

• I aspired to join the profession of merchant shipping since childhood and still recall the memories of living next to Chittagong port where I saw the ships and the merchant navy officer’s every day from our house, wanting to be one of them. • Born in a small ward of Naogaon, I studied and

lived in my hometown. I later joined the merchant navy after my secondary examination in 1994. • For the next 7 years I worked as a Mariner for

many well reputed shipping line and went to the UK for higher education in Business Management from Newcastle College, UK and which was preceded by a higher degree in Marine Engineering from South Tyneside College, UK.

Early Years…

Page 6: Shah Profile

• During my time in the UK, on top of my Marine Education and related work experience, I have also gained vast knowledge and experience in the property market and private property sales, and eventually extended my interest property management sector by having my own establishment - Shah Homes. • In this sector I have had good experience in customer

service, where key responsibilities included engaging in property development where I personally bought and sold many residential properties and business premises. Further involvement included price negotiation with estate agent, dealing with solicitors, get the best deal for mortgage and also renovated the properties up to an outstanding standard to sell at a premium.• I have also had several other customer service centric work

experience, working for world renowned British organizations such as Barclays, Cosine, JJB Sports, and British Gas among others.

Years in United Kingdom…

Page 7: Shah Profile

• I returned to Bangladesh in 2009 with a vision to do a revolution in Maritime sector to flourish the industry worldwide with Bangladeshi seafarers. • Having a very keen interest in Marine

Education and Profession, I have been engaged as the Managing Director of Shah Marine and Business Institute, which is the first and only institute in the private sector that operates along with England based South Tyneside College with the permission and approval of both the Bangladeshi and British government. • On a personal base I have been very

successful in all my projects relating to this area.

Return to Bangladesh…

Page 8: Shah Profile

• During my stay in the UK, I was planning to setup an institute that would offer education of an international standard at a lower cost to potential mariners, which was my main passion from my early years. Also from my previous job experiences with several merchant vessels, I have learnt that Bangladesh has a huge potential in this sector and there is a chance to earn huge remittance if we use our workforce in this area. • Since then, I started to explore ways and

opportunities to make a way towards my dream. In 2011, Shah Marine and Business Institute (SMBI) was founded in partnership with South Tyneside College, South Shields – a leading maritime training institute in the United Kingdom.

Return to Bangladesh… (Contd.)

Page 9: Shah Profile

• SMBI is a private limited company providing an international standard maritime academy for the first time in Bangladesh. SMBI provides a direct route of entrance to South Tyneside College from Bangladesh. Two academic routes for a career in merchant shipping are offered with the advantage of serving less time at sea and more time on shore. It also provides access to shipyards and oceangoing facilities. At SMBI, a student can earn a British qualification at lower expenses, in two years’ time, half of which will be completed in Dhaka and the final year to be completed in the United Kingdom.

• This being a huge investment and quite a challenging one, I had to compromise on what could have been a relaxed and a stable profession ahead of me. As a young investor and a dream maker, my institution is a pioneer in this field in Bangladesh and on top of that it is honoured by the British High Commission, Bangladesh.

Page 10: Shah Profile

• I strongly believe that today’s world is competitive and fast changing. To survive in this competition and to adapt to this ongoing change, one needs strong decision-making and modern and career oriented education. And for the career-oriented education, Merchant Navy is always the correct and timely choice. Merchant Navy is the only profession that will give early establishment with discipline life frame, name and money in a very short time and also helps contribute to the economic development of Bangladesh.

• Bangladesh is the world’s biggest riverine country. For the very benefit of Bangladeshi’s geographical location, steps need to be taken by both the government and individuals to make the Merchant Navy profession more up to date and take the country’s socio economic progress way forward.

• Shah Marine and Business Institute is here to introduce Bangladesh in the global frontier by training world class “seafarers”. Shah Marine and Business Institute is the first and only institute in the private sector that operates along with England based South Tyneside College with the permission and approval of both the Bangladeshi and British government.

Road to SMBI…

Page 11: Shah Profile

Being a successful entrepreneur is not good enough to be a good human being. I always believed in giving back to the society we make a living from. We have to think at large. Being a global citizen, our day to day operations impact on society to a larger extent and the strategic decisions we make are therefore more likely to affect legal and ethical standards of living. This has given rise to my urge of being a responsible citizen.

I been actively involved in several Charity programs and CSR programs

• Clean Dhaka City Program: This is a program initiated to raise awareness for a cleaner Dhaka city. The tagline of this program is “Cleaner and healthier living: Cleanliness is a part of faith”.

• In the first stage we are cleaning the surrounding area of SMBI i.e. the Adabor Ring Road area. During the second stage we are covering the whole Adabor Thana. Finally we take this mindset and make a model to implement the idea to whole Dhaka City.

• My overall goal is to ensure that solid waste management services of “Clean Dhaka City” are sustained, while the sanitary environment of the city is improved.

CSR Involvements…

Page 12: Shah Profile

Being a visionary man from my early years, I have always looked at the greater picture on how I could make a difference and contribute to my country’s future. I intend to follow my childhood dream further in my area of interest in the Marine sector and bring about changes that would make Bangladesh economically independent country in the world map. In future I would like to address the following issues:

• Infrastructure development for deep seaports in Bangladesh, in collaboration with UK and Australia.

• Developing the overall shipping sector in Bangladesh which will eventually contribute to the economy of Bangladesh significantly.

• Introducing new fleets of passenger vessels for aiding cost and time effective commuting in our riverine country.
