    Planetary Potenc y

-yotiṣa has com(le systems for assessing (lanetary strength or (otenc y butseveral com(onents of (lanetary strength can be assessed sim(ly by loo'ing at ahorosco(e5 Factors of strength can be divided into t w omain categories, those that are evident through observing the s'y directly, and those that are made evident through the system of meanings a((liedin astrology%s symbols5  An instance of the f irst category would be a verybright or full moon5 "he (otency of such a moon can be felt by all who loo'

u( at her alluring beauty on a full moon night5 Babies blessed to be born onsuch a night usually (ossess an abundance of the (ositive traits associated withthe moon5  All other factors being e6ual, they tend to be more emotionallyresilient than those born with a dar' moon7 they tend to assimilate life%so((ortunities better and to recover from its difficulties more easily5 An eam(leof the second category of strength lies in the conce(t of (lanetary dignit y , where a (lanet%s ca(acity to deliver results is weighted by  what its(lacement in a given constellation re(resents5 "his is a s y mbolicconstruction that is not directly observable in the s'  y5

/onditions influencing (lanetary (otency include the f ollo w ing) ealtation, own sign, sign of a friend or enemy, debilitation, retrogression, combustion, di' bala8directional strength9, v argottama, condition of the

dis(ositor and for the moon, brightness and the w a ing (hase

$ach (lanet has one constellation in which it is thought to function  w ithsu(reme (otency, 'nown as ealtation5  An ealted (lanet is said to be able todeliver things that a (erson wants even if they are normall y outside that(lanet%s sco(e5 In order for an ealtation to deliver full results, thedis(ositor of the ealted (lanet should also be strong and ideally, the (lanetshould be near its (oint of maimum ealtation, a (articular degree withinthe constellation5

"he net best thing for strength and sometimes better for results is own sign5"he sun and moon each own one sign and the five true (lanets each owntwo signs5 When they are in their own sign, they are both strong andcomfortable, !ust as we are when we find ourselves in our own home,(rovided no un(leasant relatives are visiting5  A (lanet in its own sign, if unafflicted, will usually ta'e good care of that sign  w hether it is malefic orbenefic5 "he Achilles heel of own sign (lanets is that when they are afflicted, both the house and its lord become aff licted, which creates a double effect for(otential trouble with that house5 "his is something (eo(le are often deceivedby, and they end u( e(ecting better results than are delivered by the own sign(lanet5 If such a (lanet is only influenced by benefics, it becomes 6uite (otent5

"hird, in terms of strength by constellational occu(ation, is sign of a friendor enemy5 While not u( to the (otency of ealtation or own sign, whether or nota (lanet occu(ies the sign of a friend or enemy can be a n im(ortantconsideration5 At the very least (eo(le tend to be v er y uncomfortable with thesignifications of (lanets in the signs of enemies5 For instance, (eo(le who have 2enus in the sign of Leo, ruled by the Sun, who is 2enus%s enemy, may bevery uncomfortable discussing se 82enus9 because they feel it is undignified8Sun95

Fourth is debilitation, the o((osite of ealtation where (lanets tend tofunction (oorly and are inclined to be wea', vulnerable and deranged5

Another category of strength is retrogression, which is when a (lanet a((earsto be moving bac'wards in the s'y5 etrograde (lanets are consideredes(ecially strong for two reasons5 In the case of the outer (lanets, they are theclosest to the earth in their orbit, which causes them to shine more brightly inthe s'y 8!ust as the bright moon is a noticeable ob!ect, so is any bright (lanet95"he second reason is that any retrograde (lanet is moving more slowly thanusual (roducing a more thorough result5 "he o((osite of retrogression iscombustion when a (lanet is so close to the sun it is lost in the sun%s rays5 As(lanets draw nearer to the sun their motion increases so such (lanets are alsomoving very f ast5 etrogression and combustion re(resent the far ends of thes(ectrum of (lanetary strength by s(eed5

&et is di' bala or directional strength5 *irectional strength is a f eature of

diurnal, or daily motion5 $ach (lanet will occu(y its (osition of di'

bala for an hour or two every day because it is a (osition in the heav ens asrelated to the s(inning of the earth5 Mercury and -u(iter achieve di' bala inthe first house5 Mars and Sun in the tenth5 Saturn in the sev enth, and Moonand 2enus in the fourth5 "he first house is the eastern horion, the tenthis directly overhead, the seventh is the  w estern horion, and the fourth isdirectly below our f eet5

2argottama, varga uttama, which means Cbest divisionC is another strengthconsideration5  A (lanet is said to occu(y the best division  w hen it occu(ies thesame constellation in the nav āṃśa as it does in the birth chart5 It is sort of li'ehaving only one marriage5 "hat (erson becomes the sole focus of one%s energies5

-ust so the (lanet%s energies are f ocused twice in the same (lace, (roducing adee(er result5

When considering any (lanet it is im(ortant to weigh in its dis(ositor, the(lanet  who owns the constellation the (lanet inhabits5 Li'e a landlord ora ruler of a country, its condition affects its tenant5

"his is not a com(rehensive list of conditions of (lanetary strength and wea'ness but it is a 6uic' overview of ty(es that are readily observ able in achart5

Sattva, Rajas and Tamas in the Zodia c

Most students of Indian s(irituality and (hiloso(hy are familiar with the threeguṇas, or fundamental 6ualities, of all manifest eistence, sattv a, ra!as andtamas5 $ach guṇa has both (ositive and negative attributes de(ending onthe state in which it is f unctioning5

Sattva guṇa is (ositively characteried by (urity, 'indness, contentment, forgiveness, harmony, order, 'nowledge, stability and truth5 It is negatively characteried by attachment to those things for themselv es rather than as a way to draw nearer to S(irit andDor by inertia and com(lacency5 Sattva is theenergy of 'nowledge and its color is w hite5

"he sattvic (lanets are Sun, Moon, and -u(iter5 "he sattvic rāśis are the dualrāśis5

a!as guṇa is the energy of energy, 'riyā śa'ti, and its color is the red of dynamic activity5 It is characteried by activity, dynamism, desire, (assion, emotion, change, enthusiasm, (leasure see'ing, goalorientation and active selfishness5 When it slides into negativity, itbecomes insatiable desire, undue attachment to li'es and disli' es,unnatural tenacity, cunning, greed, hardheartedness, fic'leness, and

irritabilit y 5"he ra!asic (lanets are Mercury and 2enus5 "he ra!asic rāśis are themoveable rāśis5

"amas guṇa is the energy of fiity, or dravya śa'ti5 Its color is blac'5 Positive6ualities include constancy, rigidity, mass, structure, the bliss of ignorance ornon3a w areness,  and inactive selfishness5 &egative 6ualities include lainess, hel(lessness, refusal to change, stinginess, mechanical behavior, dullness, chronic negativity, and non3a w areness of others5

"he tamasic (lanets are Mars, Saturn, āhu and 1etu5 "he tamasic rāśis are thefied rāśis5

In order to establish the (redominant guṇas in an individual%s nature, onecan loo' at the (rimary influences on the lagna, lagneśa, sun and moon5Planets that are strong will usually (roduce the (ositive 6ualities of the guṇa with which they are associated, and (ositive results as w ell5

    7/115

Planets that are wea' will usually (roduce negative 6ualities and results5  A (erson with wea' ra!asic (lanets may become increasingly distrustf ul of generating new (ro!ects because they are li'ely to have a history of disastrousresults5 Peo(le with a strong and influential Saturn may grow increasingly stubborn as they age because they find that tenacity usuall y (roduces (ositiveresults5

A sim(le loo' at the guṇas can become a (rofound tool for insight andsuggestions for (roductive shifts in attitudes and behav iors5

    The nf l!ence of the "arth#s $oon

"he sun and the moon are the two brightest ob!ects in our s'y and a((ear, uncannily, to be the same sie when viewed from $arth5 "he y are amanifestation of the (rimordial Śiva and Śa'ti, +ang and  +in, masculineand feminine forces that underlie our Eniv erse5

"he sun has a tremendous constancy and (redictability5 4e is self 3luminous, shines continually and moves through the s'y on a (redictable

(ath at a constant rate of s(eed5 4e is regarded as a s y mbol of our essencebecause of these 6ualities of consistent (resence and radiance5

By com(arison, the moon is a very inconstant being5 She mov es throughthe s'y at a variable rate of motion, changes sha(e and sie swiftly andcontinuously, and moves 6uic'ly against the bac'ground of stars5 She does notgenerate her own light but reflects that of the Sun5 She re(resents the *ivineFeminine, the chaos that underlies seeming order, the randomness that givesrise to the beautiful, yet not 6uite (redictable (atterns in &ature5 She is acurvy fic'le body5

"he moon also re(resents the manas or habit body of the individual, the innercontents of our minds, conscious, subconscious and unconscious5  A  2edic

astrologer  will draw conclusions about a (erson%s (redominating v āsanāsbased in (art on the condition of the moon at the time of a (erson%s birth5 Li'ethe moon, the minds of human beings are in constant flu, rotating through(s y cho3emotional states, attentionsand desires within the framewor' of a certain fiity5 "he (erson who is (rone too(timism generally resorts to ha((y thoughts or to thoughts of ha((y outcomes while the (erson who is (rone to glumness does the reverse5 Although both  will e(erience the o((osite, they  will return again and againto the same state5 Modern neuroscience remar's that in the brain Cwhat firestogether, wires together5C "his means that the same state becomes more andmore dee(ly ingrained and more easil y (roduced by the brain with time5"hus human (erce(tion can div erge greatly from the circumstances of the

moment if the brain (roduces a state that reflects its history by fre6uency orintensity, a (henomenon referred to in the common (arlance as (ro!ection, butthat has other

com(onents as well since humans often tend to gravitate to or recreatecircumstances that trigger their dee(est Cwiring5C Manas is memor y , becausememory is a collection of habits5 What a (erson remembers as beingsignificant  will largely be com(osed of things that confirm the(redominating habitsDwiring of the (ersonality5 $(eriences that f eel evenremotely similar  will (roduce the identical state in the brain reinforcing a(articular (s y cho3emotional f rame5

Additionally, the moon re(resents rasa, or the !uice of life, what /hinese systemsrefer to as !ing5 "he moon (roduces dee( cool sweet nectar that nourishes lifeon all levels5 "he moon is tender and can never burn u( life as the sun can5

"he sun has a relentless 6uality to him butthe moon is ever embracing, li'e a loving mother whom never tires of herbaby5

Peo(le born under a strong moon generally have a good ca(acity torecognie and digest the nutrition that life offers to them5 "hey are healthy eaters not only (hysically but also (sychically5 "hose with a strong moontend to naturally see good in things and have good things come their way5

Peo(le born with a wea' or afflicted moon often have a dar'er turn of mindand are inclined toward de(ression5 "hey are disinclined to (arta'e of life5"his is often fueled by negative e(eriences that set u( their habituated(atterns of (erce(tion and interaction5  A  wea' or afflicted moon can also

give rise to asceticism, because it disinclines a (erson to tasting life all thetime5

"he moon%s orbit varies in s(eed because the moon is sub!ect to t w ogravitational forces, the $arth and the sun5 *e(ending on therelationshi( of these three ob!ects in s(ace, the moon s(eeds u( or slo w s down, !ust as our minds are often (ulled in two directions5 "he moon ta'esa((roimately =@5< days to com(lete an orbit around the earth, but because theearth is also moving in s(ace, it a((ears from here that it ta'es a((roimately =5? days for the moon to orbit5 "hese orbital rates can vary by as much as :=and @ hours res(ectively5 "his is why thetwo halves of the lunar month do not always have the same number of da y s5

A lunar year is eleven days shorter than a solar year5 It ta'es nineteen

years for the two cycles to meet7 thus, every nineteen years, the moon will beat the same (hase and (osition on the same day to within t w o hours5 Ancientcultures 'new this and 'e(t trac' of this nineteen3 y ear lunar cycle, the moonslowly dancing u( and down in the s'y5

"he moon%s gravitational (ull on the $arth causes the $arth to bulge towardthe moon5 Because water is more fleible than land, the oceans bulge morenoticeably than the land, giving rise to higher tides and more un(redictable waters when the moon is closer to us in her orbit5 4uman beings are t w o3thirds  water and our brains are mostly  w ater, which means that moon%sgravitational (ull also affects us strongl y5 Water as an element corres(onds to

all desires, tastes, and emotions5 W ith each month, as the moon draws nearer tous and becomes full and bright, we e(erience her effects u(on our minds andbodies and cansee our condition more fully e(ressed5 If we (ay attention to this c y cle, we can wor' with the moon and learn to accumulate rasa or  !ing, in order to becomemore youthful and more content5 -ust as the moon (ulls on the $arth, (eo(leborn with an influential moon will often have aty(e of charisma that (ulls our attention to them5 Li'e the moon, thischarisma may wa and w ane5

"he moon loves adornment and beauty5 It is always best to loo' nice  when

worshi((ing the moon5 "he moon loves sweet flowers, seashells and(erfumes, white rice, mil', coconut !uice and other sweet cooling things5 Inastrology she rules the mind, emotions, the mother, food, nutrition, thenight, women, fashion, water, memory, imagination, habits, rece(tivity, sensitivity, and changeabilit y 5

"he moon corres(onds to ida nāḍ ī ,  the left and more internal nāḍ ī 5  In ahealthy state, this nāḍ ī   gives a state of balanced e6uilibrium and a sof trece(tivity towards others and ourselves5 When this channel is clogged,de(ression and inertia develo( along with a chaotic and weird internaldialogue5

"he moon influences us in so many ways5 Whenever you wal' outside on a

clear night, loo' at our sweet moon, and give than' s5

"he Moon is so indicative of a (erson that in classical India, all charts wereread from the (osition of the Moon5 In many (arts of India, this remains thetradition5 &o other (lanet gives as much direct ref lection into the state of abeing5 Some tets state that it is the Moon who is the giver of ha((iness ormisery because the Moon is the emotional mind and the comforts that a(erson receives in life5  A (erson with a good Moon will tend to be given bothcomforts and the emotional ca(acity to ma'e the most of them5 "hose withCbadC Moons usually have (lenty of lemons and a (oor idea of how to ma'elemonade5
