Srimad Bhagavatam Canto1.Chapter 19

Obeisances to Lord Krishna the Godhead

Chapter 19: The Appearance of S'ukadeva Gosvm

SB 1.19.1

Suta said: "Reaching home the king regretted what he did and felt depressedFeeling 'Alas, what I did to the guileless sage was truly evil and uncivilized.

SB 1.19.4

I may meet with divine wrath and tribulations and do hope that to happensoon enough so that I will expiate my sins and never commit such acts again.

SB 1.19.3

Let fire engulf my kingdom, strength and wealth today in the ire of the brahmin,and the taint of sinning to the Lord, the culture and the cows may not to me, return.'

SB 1.19.4

Repenting thus, the spell of death by snake-bite, pronounced by the sage's son reached himand he took it logical for the impertinence and indifference that material associations deem.

SB 1.19.5

Concluding service at the Lords Lotus feet is superior, he gave up this world and next,

he sat down fasting at the bank of Ganges which to his opinion the he could do best

Waters of Ganges, holy by the dust off Lord Krishnas feetand the serene, floating tulasi leaves , by his worshippers leftas purifying to inner and outer worlds and to Lord of DeathSiva himself ,which mortal would hesitate now to go for it ?

SB 1.19.7

All the vedic sages and their seer-pupils whose visit could sanctify the Gangesjoined him on the plea of a pilgrimage as if to purify themselves by Ganges

SB 1.19.8-10

Atri, Cyavana, S'aradvn, Arishthanemi, Bhrigu, Vasishthha with Pars'ara,Vis'vmitra, Angir, Paras'urma, Uthathya, Idhmavhu and Indrapramada,Medhtithi, Devala, rshthisena, Bhradvja, Gautama, Pippalda, Maitreya,

Aurva, Kavasha, Kumbhayoni, Dvaipyana and the great personality Nrada

SB 1.19.11

Also many other divinities, saintly brahmins, and advisors of the most prominent noblesand many other sages like Aruna appeared to the occasion and all the heads of the dynastiesof sagely assembly there was welcomed by the emperor bowing his head to the spiritualists.

SB 1.19.12

When all were seated comfortably, he,before them with folded hands presentas someone whose mind is detached from worldly affairs, after again in respect

having offered them his obeisances, humbly spoke about his decision to fast.

SB 1.19.13

The king said: 'We are truly grateful to be the most fortunate of all the kings who are trainedto be receptive to the favors granted by the greatest of souls, because at the feet of the saints

the royalty because of their reprehensible actions , are but refuse to be kept at a distance.

SB 1.19.14

For my sins Lord of the Worlds pronounced a curse against me through that sage,as I was living with mundane attachments when Lord ,through my awe ,took stage

Therefore oh Seers , just accept me as one surrendered with the Lords feet in his hearton the lap of divine mother Ganges , and, accursed by the sages son, Let the serpent,

bite me forthwith, while for my soul let me hear the tales of Lord Vishnu hear it recited

SB 1.19.16

I pray to have total union with Lord Krishna, should I have another birthAnd association with His devotees and with all living beings on earth

SB 1.19.17

Composed, on crowning his son earlier, The King seated himself on kus'a grass

laid to the east, while facing the north from the southern bank of the Ganges.

SB 1.19.18

The gods of the skies pleased by his fast until death, showered flowers, amidst the tumult of celestial drums and cymbals in praise, or to bless.

SB 1.19.19

The great sages by their godly goodness, glorifiedin the Vedas, lauded him for his being so enlightened

SB 1.19.20

It is not astonishing that our saintly king, heir to a throne decorated with the crownsof kings, and follower of Krishna, relinquished a royal life for the sake of salvation

SB 1.19.21

We all will stay put here till he leaves his corporeal existence and returnto the Supreme, completely free from worldly concerns and lamentation'

SB 1.19.22

Parikshit complimented the sages, for their speech impartial, sweet , grave and true,with an appropriate show of respect and said, desirous to hear the tales of Vishnu:

SB 1.19.23

As the representatives of the One above the three worlds' here you all have assembledwith no craving for this or the world beyond, but by your nature only to all ,do good

SB 1.19.24

Therefore I beg you , Vedic men of deep learning, to explain what are the different dutiesand prescribed and befitting conduct of all, and especially of those who are about to die,

SB 1.19.25

Then, as if prayed for, the saintly ,mendicant son of Vyasa, Sri Suka appeared, unadorned,Moving amidst children, negating material comforts or identity, in total enlightenment.

SB 1.19.26

Only sixteen years old, he had a body with shapely shoulders and forehead, legs, hands, thighs,arms and a neck as shapely as a conch shell also wide eyes, high nose, nice ears, and eyebrows.

SB 1.19.27

With a fleshy collarbone, a broad chest and a deep navel he had nice folds in his abdomen,Stark naked with curly, scattered hair and long arms and gods he had dark complexion

SB 1.19.28

Though Suka was scantly dressed , the sages, with an eye for physiognomy, recognized

the symptoms of the dark skin, the beauty at the tender age and the attraction he heldfor the fair sex with his innocent smiles, in reverence from their seats all of them stood

SB 1.19.29

Parikshit, blessed by Vishnu, bowed at the young sage and offered his obeisances,as the innocent urchins and women around him retired, for the exalted seat given .

SB 1.19.30

Surrounded by the great sages among , the kings and the saintly ones,S'uka shone forth as moon , by the planets, heavenly bodies and stars.

SB 1.19.31

When calm, enlightened and self-assured, Suka sat down , the great devotee,King Parikshit, who bowing with folded hands asked questions as a votary.

SB 1.19.32

Parkshit said: 'Oh the realiser of Brahman, it is a blessing for us the ruling classtoday to be a servant of thee, the Lords devotee, by your mercy of being our guest

SB 1.19.33

When we think of your divinity , that immediately purifies all the places we inhabit,not to mention what it means to see you, touch you, wash your feet and offer you a seat.

SB 1.19.34

Through your presence, oh great mystic, our gravest sinsare expunged, even of nonbelievers,by Vishnus grace !

SB 1.19.35

Finally Krishna, the Supreme Lord so dear to the sons of Pandu, was of mercy for me and has,for the satisfaction of His cousins and brothers, accepted me, their descendant, as one of theirs.

SB 1.19.36

How else could it be possible that you, Suka Swamy, out of your free will,have appeared here to meet us specially for someone nearing death, while

normally, the all-perfect , you cannot be found among the common people?

SB 1.19.37

Therefore I beg you as the supreme spiritual master , to clarify what, in this life, the beatitude ,the final perfection, would be for a person and what for someone about to die would be the duty.

Please explain what the people in general, oh master, should chant about, what they shouldwhat they should remember and share, as also what would be against the principles ,good.

SB 1.19.39

This I ask because, oh supreme devotee, in the giant mansions of the householdersone rarely sees you staying a time longer than it takes for a cow by its milkers.' "

SB 1.19.40

Suta said: "Thus being addressed and questioned by the king, pleasantlySuka, well versed in the knowledge of what is one's duty, began his reply."
