Major Issues of Vegetable availability in Rainy Season

1. As high temperature reduces life span of summer crops, the availability of summer vegetables ends in the month of May.

2. Water is the major constraint for growing vegetables on large scale in summer season.

3. Availability of rainy season Vegetables starts from August.

4. Availability of good quality seeds & seedlings.

5. Increasing disease & pest incidences in rainy season.

6. Leafy vegetables are affected by heavy rains.

7. Shortage in vegetables supply in the month of June & July.

A) General

Page 6: State wise Area (000 Ha.) State wise Production (000 M.T.) Sr. No. STATEAreaPercent Sr. No. STATEProductionPercent 1WEST BENGAL1380.30151WEST BENGAL23044.9514

B) Vegetable growers

1 . Lack of market information.

2 . Fluctuation in market rates.

3. Losses due to perishable nature of produce.

4. Large number of middlemen in market.

5. Lack of logistic & PHM support.

C) Consumers1 . Assured availability of safe & quality vegetables at

affordable prices .

Strategies

1. To prolong summer vegetable plantation.

2. Early plantation of rainy season vegetables.

3. Promotion of Vegetable seedlings under protected cultivation (shade nets, poly houses etc.)

4. Off season plantation of vegetables under protected cultivation (shade nets & poly houses) to enhance vegetable production.

5. Initiative for vegetable production through VIUC

(Vegetables Initiative for Urban Cluster) Project.

6. Location specific and need based cultivation of Onion

Tomato, Chili etc. to meet out demand supply gap.

7. Establishment of end to end value chain to ensure fresh

and timely supply vegetables.

8. Direct Marketing of vegetables i.e. growers to consumers.

9. Promotion of FPOs to ensure Backward and forward

linkages.

10. Promotion of PPP-IAD models.

Veg Net1. Veg Net Project is implemented in the state from the year 2015-16 for

registration of exportable vegetables and their phytosanitary certification.

2. Six major crops like Okra, Chilli, drumstick, curry leaf, brinjal, bitter gourd

having major export to EU countries are selected in the project in the first

phase.

3. In the beginning Residue monitoring plan and VegNet software is developed by

APEDA, Mumbai and it is under testing.

4. Vegetable clusters are identified which includes Miraj (Sangli), Parola (Jalgaon),

Vani and Dindori (Nashik), Shahapur, Murbad (Thane), Latur (Latur), Sangamner,

Kopargaon (Ahmednagar), Phaltan (Satara), Parali (Beed), Baramati, Indapur

(Pune), Malshirus (Solapur).

5. Implementation of VegNet ensures the needed traceability of the exported

consignment and assures the importers the pest free export of agriculture

commodities.

Onion Set Plantation The Technique developed by MPKV, Rahuri for set plantation will add to the availability of onion by early maturity.

Recommendations :-1. A set plantation technique of onion is recommended for

achieving early maturity, higher bulb production and profitability of pre kharif onion.

2. For set preparation sowing of onion seeds (20 g/ 6m2) should be done in second fortnight of January and sets be harvested after 90 days from sowing for getting 1.0 to 2.5 diameter set size.

3. The transplanting of stored sets should be done from second fortnight of June for better quality onion production within 70 to 75 days after transplanting .
