PART FIVE

    INTRODUCTION

    This is another story explaining the abstract principles of space and time.

    In Leelas story, the Brahmin of the GiriGraama village dies and is bound in the little

    room-space of the hut he lived. Within a few days of his death there, his Jeeva

    experiences a life as King Padma for many years. When King Padma dies, his Jeeva is

    entrapped in the tiny space under the arch of his bed-room. And within a day or so, the

    Jeeva experiences again a compete life as King Vidooratha. His Jeeva returns to Padmas

    body by the grace of Goddess Jnapti and he lives later on happily in the company of apleasing wife.

    In Lavanas story, King Lavana experiences a whole life of a Chaandaala within a few

    minutes, as he is seated on the throne itself, caught under the spell of the sorcerer. After

    waking up on the throne he visits the places seen in his delusory state. He is surprised to

    find that his Chaandaala experience of a few minutes had really occurred in those places

    for many long years and finds the proof in the words of those people.

    Here Gaadhi the Brahmin takes a dip in the water to chant some Mantras. Before he lifts

    his head, he undergoes the experiences of a Chaandaala from birth to death. He also, like

    Lavana goes in search of those lands he saw in his delusion and finds that those eventshad occurred there within a long span of many years for those people there.

    How it was possible is explained here, through the words of Lord Vishnu, the Supreme

    Controller of Maayaa.

    GAADHIS STORY

    CHAPTER ONEVasishta spoke

    Rama! This delusion called the worldly existence is never-ending (limitless).

    It perishes only by the conquering of ones own mind.

    In order to prove the paradoxical nature of the world appearance caused by delusion,

    I will tell you this story! Listen attentively.

    There is the city of Kosala adorning the earth pedestal, like the forest of Kalpa trees, the

    store-house of gems adorns the Meru Mount.There lived a Brahmin in that city named Gaadhi. He was noble in character, well versed

    in scriptures, extremely wise and was like the embodiment of Dharma.

    From childhood he had developed dispassion in the mind, like the earth enveloped by the

    taintless sky.

    For some fulfillment he wanted to achieve, he left all his relatives and went to the forest

    to perform penance.

    That excellent Brahmin reached a lake filled with lotuses, like the moon approaching a

    star-filled sky.

    He decided to stand in the water submerged till the neck and do penance until he could

    get the vision of Lord Vishnu.

    He entered the water and stayed in the waters for eight months.Being in the company of lotuses which contract by the separation of the Sun, his face also

    had slightly lost its shine, as it were.

    Pleased by his penance, Lord Vishnu appeared in front of him, like the dark cloud

    appearing in the scorching summer sky to dampen the earth.

    Lord Vishnu asked him to request for any boon.

    4/47

    Lord spoke

    Brahmin! Get out from the middle of the waters and accept the required boon.

    Your tree of penance has borne the desired fruit.

    The Brahmin spoke

    Salutation O Vishnu!

    You are the (dark-hued) bee

    hovering in the hollow of the lotus of the hearts of countless beings

    in the single lotus lake of the tri-worlds!

    Lord! I want to see this Maayaa (Deluding power) of the Supreme Being,

    created by you which is named the worldly existence

    and which blinds one and all.

    Vasishta spoke

    You will see that Maayaa and will renounce it also

    The unborn Lord said so and vanished like an illusory city.

    CHAPTER TWO

    Vasishta spoke

    The excellent Brahmin got out of the water, after Lord Vishnu was gone, like the moon

    rising out of the cool and pure milk ocean.

    He felt very happy by the vision of the Great Lord like the night lotus blooming by the

    sight and touch of the moon.

    Exhilarated by the vision of Lord Vishnu, he continued to do his routine duties of

    Brahmin hood and remained in that forest for some more days.

    One day early in the morning he went to the lake filled with lotuses to bathe in its waters.

    He was thinking about the words of Lord Vishnu as he submerged inside the water; and

    recited the special chants which ward of the sins with suitable gestures holding the Kushagrass in his hand, remaining inside the water itself as ordained.

    Suddenly he forgot the words of the chant and his mind went blank.

    His head was reeling.

    {He saw as he remained submerged in the waters of the lake, within a few minutes-}

    himself lying as a corpse in a house like a tree that fell from the mountain stuck by heavy

    winds;

    the body was without the functions of Praana and Apaana flow of airs;

    limbs remained still like the branches in a windless atmosphere;

    the face had become pale like the dried up leaf of a tree;the body was lying lifeless like a lotus cut off from the stem; it was dead;

    the eyes were without sight like the early morning sky without stars;

    it appeared as forlorn as a village filled with dust all over, when rains are absent;

    all the relatives sitting around the dead Gaadhi and mourning his death;

    his wife holding on to the feet of the dead body like a lotus adorning his feet; her tears

    flooding out as if a dam had broken;

    his mother holding his face covered with newly growing hairs lamenting aloud;

    people with tears dampening their faces,

    were sitting next to the body,

    like the dry leaves fallen all around the dead tree

    with their moisture evaporating away;

    6/47

    the limbs were spread out like unrelated members,

    not wanting to join the main body for fear of separation;for they knew that union always leads to separation;

    the lips were apart

    baring the slightly darkened white teeth which were laughing with contempt

    about their own life with dispassion as it were;

    as if silent and meditating; as if made of wet mud;

    sleeping deeply not intent on waking up at all;

    as if in profuse rest;

    and as if trying to hear the screaming shouts of the grieving crowd with great effort

    to analyze their degree of affection;

    {He saw as he remained submerged in the waters of the lake, within a few minutes-}

    his inauspicious lifeless body never to be seen again, carried by his relatives beating their

    chests and collapsing in grief, to the cremation ground spread out with rotting flesh and

    bone pieces;

    his body burnt to ashes in a blazing fire;

    the fire consuming his body with a great noise;

    CHAPTER THREE

    Vasishta spoke

    {Gaadhi saw through his apprehensive mind, as he remained submerged in the waters of

    the lake, within a span of just a few minutes-}

    the country named BhootaMandala;

    people of low caste living in the outskirts of that country;

    the streak of Jeeva entering the womb of a Chaandaala woman there;

    suffering the pangs of residing inside a womb, with fragile limbs;

    tormented inside the low-caste womans body as if lying in ones own feces;

    in course of time getting born with a black hue like that of a monsoon cloud and lying on

    the filthy ground;being a child in a Chaandaala home as a darling of his parents;

    moving here and there as if caught in the floods of the dark waters of Yamunaa River;

    becoming twelve years old; then turning into sixteen; having thick shoulders and a plump

    body like a fat cloud;

    moving in the wild forests accompanied by hosts of dogs; killing hundreds of deer;

    living like a Chaandaala;

    married to an attractive female of his caste; wandering in the forests enjoying her

    company; living inside the hollows of the trees and the caves of the mountains;

    becoming an expert in forest-living and killing animals;

    getting many children of worst characters to light up his family line, in those hills, like

    the Khadira tree producing thorns;living as a family man and losing his youth;

    body deteriorating like the rain-less field;

    reaching the country called Bhoota-Graha (Mandala) near his birth place; constructing a

    small hut out of leaves in the outskirts and living there like a Sage;

    himself old and living with his sons who had grown old;

    appearing like a dark dried up Tamaala tree rising out of a dark snake hole;

    himself old and having a huge family;

    himself extremely cruel in words and actions;

    Then Gaadhi, who, through his delusion, saw that he was himself older than all other

    Chaandaalas, bore witness to all the members of his family being taken away by Death,like the flood carrying away the collection of forest leaves;

    He was crushed by the grief and lamenting alone in the forest, wandered like a deer who

    had lost his herd; having no one to support him and eyes filled with tears.

    He spent a few more days in the same place and then filled with grief, he left that village

    like a bird flying away from the lake with dried up lotuses.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    8/47

    He wandered in many countries depressed and forlorn; just moving as if forced by some

    one else, like a cloud thrown about by wind. He reached some day, the prosperous

    country ruled by Keeras, like a traveler in the sky wandering in the empty sky suddenly

    comes across a beautiful sky-vehicle.

    CHAPTER FOUR

    Vasishta spoke

    The Chaandaala Gaadhi now walked along the royal road which appeared like a

    pathway to heaven.The trees on the side of the road were adorned by clothes stitched with precious stones.

    Flowers were strewn all over the road reaching up to the ankles. Fragrance of the sandal

    pervaded everywhere. Crowds of men and women hung out here and there.

    He saw then a huge elephant looking auspicious and decorated with gems and diamonds,

    like the Meru Mountain on the move.

    As the king of that country was dead, the elephant was walking on that road in search of a

    new king for the country, like a diamond-expert searches for a wish fulfilling

    Chintaamani Gem.

    This Chaandaala remained staring at the elephant curiously which was like a mountain

    slowly walking towards him.

    As he stared, the elephant lifted him with his trunk and gently placed him on its back like

    placing the Sun on top of the Meru Mount.

    Immediately the drums sounded marking the auspicious moment.The shouts of the people May the King be Victorious filled the quarters.

    Ladies of excellent beauty surrounded the surprised Chaandaala like waves enveloping

    the Mandara Mountain.

    Those pretty maidens covered him with royal garments and ornaments of all kinds.

    Beautiful flower-garlands adorned his chest.

    Fragrant pastes covered his dark body.

    The old Chaandaala now appeared like the Kalpa Tree filled with flowers of precious

    stones.

    He was led to the court; was made to sit on the royal throne; was consecrated as the king

    of the country.

    In this manner, the Chaandaala entered the Keera city and got the kingdom like a crow

    getting a dead fat deer of the forest.

    His feet and hands were massaged by the beautiful Keera women.

    His dark body shone red by the application of crocus (Kumkuma) paste, like the

    evening sky.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    9/47

    He now was like a lion residing in a flower-filled forest, along with his family of

    lionesses, a king of all those civilized citizens of the Keera country.

    His body covered with the rare pearls found on the head of the elephants stuck by lions;

    freed of all apprehensions and grief; he enjoyed the royal pleasures offered by the good

    people of the country. He was now all-powerful. His commands were obeyed by one andall. Within a few days he made his own rules and had the control of everything.

    Entrusted the care of the kingdom by the people, he became a king there by the name of

    Gavala (Wild buffalo).

    CHAPTER FIVE

    Vasishta spoke

    Gavala lived happily enjoying all the pleasures of the royal class.

    He was always surrounded by pretty maidens.

    He was worshipped by the ministers.

    He was saluted by all the subordinate kings.

    He walked under the white umbrella fanned by the chowries.

    All obeyed his orders verbatim.

    He was an expert now in the science of administration.

    He was now in the highest position.

    He was freed of grief and fear and exhaustion.

    He forgot completely his identity as a Chaandaala.

    He was always getting praised by poets.His brain was intoxicated as if drunk, by so much joy and well-being.

    In this manner he ruled the kingdom of Keeras for eight years, acting highly civilized like

    a high caste man in the presence of others!

    CHAPTER SIX

    Vasishta spoke

    Once he had removed the royal adornments and sitting alone in his private chambers, like

    the dark sky removed of all the shining objects like the stars, moon, sun etc.

    He did not much value the gold and diamond ornaments now. His mind had bloated by

    the status of a king and he did not feel that he needed those ornaments to hide himself

    anymore.

    He walked out of the room bereft of his royal attire and entered the courtyard occupied by

    the servants like the Sun leaving the huge sky and descending down into the dark world.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    10/47

    He saw there a group of fat dark Chaandaalas, singing melodiously to the accompaniment

    of a stringed instrument like the cuckoo bird in spring; softly like the bees humming

    around a tree. (For his Chaandaala ears the song of his clan was more melodious than the

    royal orchestra).

    One of them got up as soon as he saw the king; his eyes were red because of old age; he

    was the chief of that Chaandaala group, looking like the peak of the crystal mountain

    covered by snow (dust-covered body).

    He addressed the Keera king shouting loudly- Hey Katanja!

    Assuring all his people around him that the king will award the best singer with gifts; will

    offer various gifts like gold and clothes to all of them, he called out to the king-

    Hey King! I am extremely happy to see you, like the lotus by the Sun. Sight of a relative

    is the best of all joys one experiences in life.

    CHAPTER SEVEN

    Vasishta spoke

    As the Chaandaala uttered these words, the shocked king ignored the Chaandaala chief

    and moved away.

    But the ladies looking out into the courtyard through the windows saw all this.

    They were pained to know that their king was a Chaandaala by birth and their faces lost

    colors like the lotuses hit by snow. The civilized ladies of higher caste lost their shine likethe mountains burnt by fire.

    The king moved away quickly from that place without acknowledging the words of the

    Chaandaala chief, like a lion ignoring the calls of a cat sitting on top of a tree.

    He made haste and entered the harem where the girls stuck by depression had collapsed

    on the ground, like trees set on fire at the root region.

    The king saw that everyone there was looking sad, like the flowering plants whose roots

    were eaten by the rats.

    The ministers, citizens avoided touching the king like a corpse placed in the house.

    The servants remained at a distance and did not offer him any service, like the children

    crying for the death of the person, still avoid the dead body.

    All those high caste men and women disregarded him like the cremation ground - dark,ugly and depressing.

    Nobody went near the proximity of that dark-hued pathetic man like the fire avoiding the

    rocky slope of the hill.

    His commands had no effect on his subordinates like the water drops against the ashes.

    People ran away from him as if from a demon known for cruel and inauspicious acts.

    Though surrounded by crowds, he stood alone ignored by all, like the traveler without

    money in a foreign land.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    11/47

    Though he tried to make a conversation, nobody gave their ears to his words like the

    traveler ignores the sound emanating from the pearl-filled bamboo bush.

    The citizens, ministers and all those who belonged to the city decided

    We have lived for long with this Chaandaala and polluted our lives. Let us perform the

    atonement of this sin by entering the fire.

    They set fire to various places in the city using dried sticks as fuel; the city appeared like

    the dark sky lit by stars.

    The entire city was filled with screams and shouts.

    All entered the fire holding hands, crying and weeping for their misfortune.

    Soon the smell of burning flesh filled the quarters.

    The city appeared as if destroyed by the dissolution fires.

    Gavala watched everything helplessly. His mind was filled with remorse and pain. After

    all he had lived with noble company all these years in that kingdom. His mind was purer

    now.

    He thought-

    Because of me, this city stuck by misfortune has perished like this. Why should I live

    any more and suffer this pain? Death suits a man than life when he has harmed so many

    people and earned ill-fame. Death is the greatest joy I can have ever.

    So thinking, Gavala offered his body to the flames like a moth falling into the fire.

    As the body named Gavala fell into the blazing fire and perished, Gaadhi woke up inside

    the water immediately feeling the painful sensation of the burning of his body.

    Vaalmiki spoke

    As the Sage was speaking words profound with knowledge, the day ended; the people in

    the court saluted the Sage and left to attend to their evening duties of bath etc; they

    returned again with the Suns rays.

    CHAPTER EIGHT

    Vasishta spoke

    Within a few minutes Gaadhi recovered from the delusion and was fully out of the

    experiences created by his mind. The apprehensive state of the mind subsided like a

    whirlpool disappearing into the ocean. He was out of the mind-created world, like Lord

    Brahma stops his world-creation job at the end of the dissolution time.

    He woke up to his real world of the Brahmins life as if coming out of a nightmare; as if

    becoming sober after the effect of the liquor was lessened!

    I am so and so; This is what is happening This is not he understood all this like the

    world enveloped by the darkness wakes up to the affairs of the world when the night ebbs

    away.

    Remembering his own identity, he lifted the leg out of the water.

    Looking at the land with its waters, directions and sky again and again, he felt as if he

    was in a different world and wondered at it all.

    Wrinkling his eye brows, he tried to think who he was, what he saw and what he did.

    I was tired and saw all that happened only for a second having decided so, he came out

    of the water like sun rising from the Udaya Mountain.

    He sat on the bank and thought-

    When I was lying dead between the mother and the wife, who was that mother and who

    was that wife?

    My parents had died when I had not even crossed my childhood! I had floated away likea leaf when the tree with the creeper gets cut off by a sword!

    I was not married at all! I do not even know what a woman is like, like a Brahmin knows

    not the taste of the sinful liquor! My own relatives live very far from me! How could I die

    amongst them?

    Then what was it that I saw as so many events akin to the vision of the illusory city?

    The death that occurred with all the relatives grieving for me must be only a delusion of

    the mind. There is no truth in it at all.

    The mind is capable of imagining so many things in the course of the day. This must be

    one such imagined dream.

    Having reasoned out like this, Gaadhi did not give much importance to that experience.He continued his routine life of penance residing in the same hut he had built.

    CHAPTER NINE

    Vasishta spoke

    One day a guest arrived at his hermitage, like Durvaasa visiting Brahma.

    He looked very tired and was offered fruits and drinks by Gaadhi. They both together

    finished the rituals of the day and at night settled on the beds made of tender leaves ready

    to sleep. They talked about various topics and in the course of the conversation, Gaadhi

    asked him Hey Brahmin! You look so emaciated and lean! Why are you so tired? What

    happened?

    The guest spoke

    Listen! I will tell you why I have become so thin!

    I will tell you exactly what happened. I am not given to making up false stories!

    On the northern side of this region, there is a great country named Keera. I remained

    there for a month worshipped by the Brahmins of that country enjoying the taste of the

    various delicacies offered to me.

    One day, one of them said casually, Hey Brahmin! This country was ruled by a

    Chaandaala for eight years!

    I questioned others of that city also. They all repeated the same thing; that their country

    had been ruled by a Chaandaala king; that he entered the fire and gave up his life; that

    hundreds of Brahmins also offered their lives into the fire.I immediately left that country; purified myself in the waters of Prayaaga; performed the

    fasting ritual of Chaandraayana Vow thrice and came to you. That is why I am so thin

    and tired out.{Chaandraayana Vrata- a religious observance fifteen mouthfuls at the full moon; diminishing one

    mouthful everyday during the dark fortnight; zero mouthfuls on the new moon ; increased again in the next

    fortnight}

    Gaadhi questioned him again and again; got the same story repeated. The night somehow

    passed, with Gaadhi lost in thoughts. In the morning the guest finished his morning

    rituals of bathing, worship etc; and went away.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    14/47

    CHAPTER TEN

    Vasishta spoke

    Gaadhi started thinking amazed by what he had heard-

    What I saw in my mind as an imagined experience has been proved to be real by the

    Brahmins account. How can this magical feat occur?

    What I saw as death in the midst of my relatives is undoubtedly a delusory experience.

    What the Brahmin related cannot be real. I will not believe anything till I see that place

    myself and verify the truth of my Chaandaala experiences. I will immediately visit the

    village at the outskirts of the BhootaMandala country. I will test his words by visiting

    those places myself.

    Having decided in this way he got ready to travel to those regions.

    The wise attain even those things conceived by their minds through effort!

    Gaadhi went out and attained abundantly all that he saw in his dream!

    Even the most difficult things get achieved by effort proper!

    Gaadhi wanted to directly experience the delusion of the world!

    He travelled with all the speed and crossed many countries. At last he reached the country

    BhootaMandala and found the forest where he had lived as a Chaandaala. Remembering

    the paths treaded by him in that life, he soon reached the village of the Chaandaalas rising

    in front of him like a city created by illusion. He saw his own house looking like the hell

    situated under the earth, as he had seen in his delusory state. He remembered his own

    identity of the Chaandaala who had lived there. His mind felt detached to all these

    experiences.

    The house was in ruins. Rain had made the place wet and damp. Grass shoots sprung out

    of the walls. He saw pieces of the torn blanket that had covered him; a few remains of his

    bed; the broken down walls; the whole house in a shattered condition.

    It was as if the misfortune had become dense there and poverty had become the walls. It

    was as if adversity had broken its limbs and disaster had broken down.

    Gaadhi spent looking at everything in that house of his for a long time, as if seeing his

    own past body lying there dried up and worn out!

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    15/47

    The dried up white bones of the cows and buffaloes were scattered everywhere; the

    hollow skulls used by him for eating and drinking were now filled with rain waters and

    gave a musty smell; all the remains of the sinews and nerves of animals were covered

    with dried up creepers.

    Feeling amazed by all these sights, he reached the village next to the Chaandaaladwelling like a traveler crossing over the slums and reaching the civilized areas.

    He enquired every villager he met-

    O Good man! Do any of you know what happened to the Chaandaalas who lived in the

    outskirts of this village? An intelligent man always remembers events that have happened

    far back in the past- so say the wise! Do you remember the good old Chaandaala who

    lived like the embodiment of suffering, aloof from all? If you know, please tell me all that

    happened to him.

    Clarifying matters to a traveler is considered as a meritorious deed.

    The village people spoke-

    Whatever you have told us as about these Chaandaalas, that alone has happened; nototherwise! An ugly Chaandaala of terrifying looks named Katanja lived here. He had his

    own group of followers like his family, friends, relatives etc. All his people were

    snatched away by death unfortunately. He left this place and went to the country of

    Keeras. He ruled that country as a king for eight years. When the people found about his

    real origin, they threw him out like a poisonous tree gets cut off by the villagers. They all

    atoned their sin of pollution by entering the fire. The Chaandaala, who had refined his

    character in the company of the noble, also entered the fire and gave up his life.

    O noble man! Why are you making so much effort to know about what happened to a

    Chaandaala? Was he related to you in any way or were you related to him by chance?

    Gaadhi hid in his heart, the embarrassment of being that very Chaandaala who caused a

    country to perish, like the moon hiding its taint. He spent a month in that village slowly

    collecting all the information about the Chaandaala. Whatever he found out was exactly

    the same as he had experienced in his delusory state under the waters, within few

    minutes.

    After getting the proof of his life there from the mouth of all, Gaadhi was stuck with

    wonder.

    16/47

    CHAPTER ELEVEN

    Vasishta spoke

    {He revisited the Chaandaala colony and wandered all over with high amazement. His

    mind could not rest in peace wondering about the magical events of his life. He visited

    every corner of the forest, he touched every object he remembered in his Chaandaala life;

    he remembered again and again all the events of his life in that forest.}

    After spending a long time there, he decided to leave that place and started towards the

    Keera country. Crossing over many forests, hills and rivers he reached his destination at

    last, like Naarada reaching the heavens after a tiresome wandering on earth.

    Gaadhi recognized all the places in that country where he had moved as a king. Heenquired the people there-

    O Good one! Do you remember anything of that Chaandaala king? If you know

    anything about all that happened, please tell me about it.

    The citizens said-

    O Brahmin! A Chaandaala ruled here for eight years as the king. The royal elephant

    chose him as the ruler, when the previous king had died. Later the truth was found out

    and he entered the fire. O Brahmin! Twelve years have passed after that tragic event.

    Whomever Gaadhi questioned the same story was repeated.

    CHAPTER TWELVE

    Vasishta spoke

    {Then he saw the temple of Vishnu; saw Lord Vishnu coming out of that temple dressed

    as a king seated on the royal elephant along with the retinue, in a grand procession. He

    immediately remembered himself as that king and all the royal scenes of the Chaandaala

    life flashed before his eyes.}

    Gaadhi spoke

    s ||

    This is the kingdom populated by the Keeras experienced by me in the past,

    now again in front of me directly experienced by me, as the experience of another life.

    This is in front of me again in this woken up state,

    as if the dream has turned out to be real!

    I do not understand how this Maayaa comes into being, deluding one like this!

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    18/47

    Ah! Because of this mind caught by delusion for long,

    I have become helpless like a peacock trapped in a net.

    Ha! Fie on all this! My ignorant mind harassed by the Vaasanaa,

    sees all these widespread states of delusion like a child.

    This is the great power of delusion revealed to me by Lord Vishnu.

    Well-done! I remember everything.

    Now I will remain inside the cave of some hill

    and try to understand the origin and subsistence of this evil delusion.

    Having thought like this, Gaadhi left that city; reached a cave in some hill; and remained

    there like lion in rest.

    Drinking just a handful of water per day, he performed penance to please Lord Vishnu,

    for one and half years.

    CHAPTER THIRTEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    Lord Vishnu stood in front of the Brahmin pleased by his devotion.

    Lord Vishnu spoke

    Gaadhi! You have had a glimpse of my power of dense delusion!

    You have seen the workings of this universe which appear to be pre-destined.

    When you have fully seen in your mind what you wanted without any fault,

    what more do you want performing penance like this on the slope of the hill?

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    19/47

    Vasishta spoke

    Gaadhi, the Brahmin of excellent character was overcome with joy at the vision of theLord. He offered flowers at his feet; saluted him with devotion and spoke looking at him

    like a chaataka bird looks at the dark cloud.

    Gaadhi spoke

    s

    Lord! Reveal the knowledge ofthis extremely dark deluding power of yours which was glimpsed by me,

    like the Sun lighting up the earth in the morning.

    Whatever delusion the mind adorned by the taint of Vaasanaa perceived,

    as if like a dream,

    how O Lord, is it seen even in the waking-state?

    You are established in the state of taintless Knowledge!

    How did my dream-like delusion experienced for a few minutes inside the water

    become the object of real experience (in the wakeful-state)?

    s

    How is it that,

    when I was having the delusion of being a Chaandaala,

    the short or long duration of the time; and the birth and death of the body,

    were not contained wholly within the mind?

    (How were they experienced outside the mind also?)

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    20/47

    Lord Vishnu spoke

    s ||

    Gaadhi!

    What abundant delusion you saw belongs to the mind which is

    ignorant of the Supreme Truth and which is tossed about by the Vaasanaas;

    which is the very nature of the (embodied) Self.

    There is nothing outside like the sky, mountain, water, earth, directions etc.

    All this is inside the mind like the collection of leaves inside the sprout.

    Like the fruit etc rise up from the sprout and appear outside,

    so do the earth etc rise out of the mind.

    {Every event as embedded in space and time is the projection of the mind as colored by a particular

    Vaasanaa.}

    It is indeed true that the earth etc are inside the mind and not outside.

    The bud is only inside the sprout; that is why the fruit is there!

    {The unfulfilled Vaasanaa latent in the mind alone is perceived as an experience as if outside.}

    The perception of the forms is decided by the mind

    at some mode of time (past, present or future) where the action took place.

    (If it is in the memory, then it is past; if it is not in the memory, it is future; if seen directly it is present.)

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    21/47

    Like the potter making a pot,

    the mind withdraws sometimes; creates sometimes.

    (Like a potter shapes a pot sometimes holding on to the clay, sometimes leaving it free and so on, the mind

    shapes up the events as belonging to different time modes.)

    From a child onwards, this is experienced by one and all,

    as when dreaming, when deluded, when in the confused state of intoxication;

    when in love; when ill and so on!

    {When mind is affected by love, or illness, or intoxication, or dream, the world looks different. Time

    appears long or short accordingly.

    Similarly the mind which is affected by ignorance of the Self, perceives a world as projected by a latent

    thought-mode (Vaasanaa) hidden in the mind.}

    Countless events (possibilities) remain in the mind seized by the Vaasanaas

    like the fruits and flowers in the tree which has its roots spread out on the land.

    {Fruits are inside the flowers; flowers are inside the sprouts; sprouts are inside the seed. The whole tree

    filled with fruits and flowers, and occupying a large space of the land is contained within the tiny seed.

    Each individual mind also contains the events of the life within itself in the form of Vaasanaas. At thesuitable point, some Vaasanaa becomes a concrete experience.}

    The tree which is detached from the land does not again produce leaves;

    so also the Jeeva bereft of Vaasanaas does not go through births and deaths.

    {The seed had to be inside the earth to project out as a tree. The mind also needs the Vaasanaas to project

    an event as an experience.Uproot the tree from the ground, it grows no more. Destroy the Vaasanaas and the world-delusion no more

    affects you.}

    Where endless world narratives (Vaasanaa-fulfillments) exist by its power,

    if one Chaandaala life-story is manifested as a real experience,

    what is there to be surprised about?

    {Any experience is possible at any time. The mind is ridden with countless Vaasanaas. In the case of

    Gaadhi, his disgust towards the Chaandaalas and envy of the life experienced by kings resulted in his

    becoming a Katanja and Gavala. Nothing magical about it!}

    The Chaandaala state was understood by you as real

    because of the same appearances connected to that state,

    presenting abundant supports of various types.

    {Why did Gaadhi get the proof of the Chaandaala life outside the waters also?

    Because his delusion had not ended with the death-scene of Gavala!After he reached home, the delusion again continued when he met the Brahmin-guest.

    Getting the final proof of his Chaandaala existence was again a part of the same delusion.

    Gaadhi was deluded enough to think that the delusion had ended after he came out of the waters.

    The delusion occurred intermittently so he could never know what was real and what was unreal}

    That is how the guest came to visit you.

    The Brahmin ate and slept at your place.He told the same story you had experienced.

    You were amazed by seeing all this.

    {What is to wonder, if a dream character in a dream proves your dream story?

    The guest-Brahmin was also a part of the delusion experienced by Gaadhi and he gave proof of the Keera

    country and Gavalas death!}

    That is how you got up and said-

    I am going; I have reached the dwelling of the Chaandaalas;

    These are the Chaandaalas; these are the villages.

    You were amazed by seeing all this.

    That is how you saw the ruins of Katanjas house.

    The people said that the house belonged to Katanja.

    You were amazed by seeing all this.

    That is how you said-

    I have reached the country of Keeras.

    All these people also tell me that a Chaandaala was their ruler.

    You were amazed by seeing all this.

    O Excellent Brahmin! All this was just part of your delusory experience.

    What you believe to be real, know that also as unreal!

    The mind is completely entwined by the Vaasanaas.

    Why do you not see inside?

    In one moment of a dream, one has the experience of a year.

    There was no guest; no Chaandaalas; no Keeras; nor was there that city.

    O wise one! You saw all this because of your own delusion.

    24/47

    {In the continuous flow of experiences, where did the delusion end? Where did it begin? What was real in

    Gaadhis life? What was not real?

    Lord Vishnu clarifies-

    The life of the Chaandaala inside the water was a delusion.

    Gaadhi got out of the waters and wondered about all than had happened. That was real.

    The arrival of the Brahmin guest; his description of the Keera country; - were again part of the delusion.

    Believing in the existence of the Brahmin-guest, Gaadhi started on his journey to search for the

    BhootaMandala and Keera country. That was real.

    As he travelled, he became tired and rested inside a cave. There he again experienced the delusion of

    visiting BhootaMandala and Keera country.}

    As you went in search of the dwelling place of Chaandaalas,

    you rested in some cave of the hill like a deer in the forest.

    Inside that cave only, being tired of the journey, you felt drowsy and

    saw the BhootaMandala and the house lived by you as a Chaandaala.Nothing was real!

    So also, you saw the city of Keeras.

    Whatever you saw there (in Gaadhis hermitage or in the cave)

    or anywhere else (as you took holy dip),

    was caused by delusion alone, O Brahmin!

    Always you saw yourself wandering in various places, in all directions like a mad man

    because of the mind filled with delusion.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    25/47

    {Delusion has no fixed time and place. That is why Gaadhi experienced events of many years within a few

    minutes, inside the waters, and inside the cave.}

    Therefore, get up now; remain with a peaceful mind doing your regular duties.

    Men do not attain any good without performing their respective duties.

    {Lord Vishnu vanished after uttering these words.}

    CHAPTER FOURTEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    After Lord Vishnu disappeared, Gaadhi again visited all those places seen in his

    delusion- state once again, like a cloud floating all over the sky. He wanted to

    understand the delusion completely.

    He saw the same places and the same people!

    All the people there recounted the same story as before.

    {This time it was for real, not a delusion state!}

    Again he went to the cave in the mountain and performed penance on Lord Vishnu.

    Sooner than expected, Lord Vishnu was standing in front of him.

    Just a little worship and Lord Vishnu becomes a friend immediately.

    He addressed Gaadhi as a cloud to the peacock- What more do you want through this

    penance?

    Gaadhi spoke

    26/47

    I am confused O Lord,

    having wandered the same lands occupied by the Chaandaalas and Keeras,

    for six months.

    The story differs not even a little, in the conversations that occur there.

    Lord! Why did you tell me that

    the land of the Chaandaalas was seen because of the power of delusion.

    The words of the great should remove confusion; not increase it!

    CHAPTER FIFTEEN

    INTRODUCTION

    Lord Vishnu explains the concept of Time to Gaadhi in the next few verses.

    The explanation is like this-

    After Vishnu disappeared dismissing the Chaandaala dwelling and the Keera country as

    totally unreal, the delusion-experience was over for Gaadhi. He had desired the glimpse

    of Maaya and had his wish fulfilled. He saw how reality and delusion entwined together

    to give a life-experience.

    He could have gone back and lived his routine life as the Lord suggested. But curiosity

    took the better of him. He decided to visit the Chaandaala dwelling and Keera country

    once again and find out whether they existed really or not. Soon he was out searching forthose places.

    Same routes, same paths, and he soon found them as he desired. He met the same people

    he had seen in his delusion; asked the same questions; got the same answer. It was

    obvious that the Chaandaala Katanja had become a king of the Keera country and had

    entered the fire. It was exactly as he had experienced in the delusory states. These were

    real Keera country citizens and they knew the events as real.

    Confused more than ever, he returns to the cave; propitiates Vishnu and requests him to

    clarify matters.

    Vishnu explains-

    What is an event?

    Experience shared by many!

    Or rather minds joining other minds!

    All the minds act as mirrors placed in front of other mirrors. Everyone reflects the

    thoughts of every one and a total scene gets projected as a common experience.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    27/47

    When Gaadhi visited the Keera country for real, the minds of those citizens reflected the

    same thoughts of Gaadhi and recounted Gavalas story as their own experience.

    Since there is no absolute solid space or time outside of the mind, what one experiences

    is just a mind-created phenomenon.Time is also a projection of the mind.

    Since we have no way of knowing about the world except through the mind, what the

    mind says alone holds good.

    Mind can project a sun-set and call it an evening; or project a sun-rise and call it a

    morning. We have no way of verifying anything. We have to verify using the same mind

    and once again what it explains alone holds good. That is why so many religions and

    philosophies are prevalent, describing the reality in various ways. They are all

    conclusions reached through minds.

    The only way to find out the reality is to see things without using the mind; without

    reflecting any ideas of any mind-mirror.When the mind is completely destroyed, then only the truth will appear like a Sun in a

    cloudless sky.

    Lord Vishnu tries to explain this truth to Gaadhi in the next few verses.

    Vasishta spoke

    {EVERYTHING IS A RANDOM OCCURRANCE!}

    Lord Vishnu spoke

    The narrative of the Chaandaala

    reflects in the mind of all the residents of the Chaandaala and Keera lands

    as seen in your mind,

    by mere co-incidence (crow sits and palm leaf falls).

    Therefore dear Gaadhi, they will tell your story as you experienced it.

    The appearance once reflected in the mind does not revert back to non-appearance.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    28/47

    {Your experiences might have affected the minds of the Chaandaala people and citizens of the Keera

    country; and they might have recounted them as their own experiences!

    Every event experienced by the individual mind becomes a Smriti or Memory in Brahmas mind-space

    and gets reflected in all other minds. It does not disappear.}

    Some Chaandaala might have built a hut at the outskirts of the village.

    You saw that; thought you had built it; and got it proved by others also.

    {You might have seen an old ruin of a hut and thought that you were the Chaandaala who lived there. The

    other Chaandaalas there were affected by those thoughts and gave word to it as their own experience.}

    Sometimes the same appearance is perceived by many as a matter of co-incidence.

    The minds ways are indescribable!

    {- some crow-species named Dronaka, sitting on the Taalaa leaf}

    Similarly, one dream is seen by many men,

    similar to getting a confused state of mind as in a dream

    or by consuming intoxicating drinks.

    {Sometimes many may have the same dream; each reflecting the thoughts of the other mind!

    Two or three drunkards together may see the same hallucinations, each affected by the others thoughts!}

    Many boys together enjoy a single sport.

    Many deer cubs are attracted at once by the dark-green hue of the forest-land.

    (Many boys together conceive of hills, houses, etc in a heap of sand and act accordingly in unison.

    The deer cubs together perceive the dark green grass-land and run towards it.)

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    29/47

    s ||

    Many men do efforts as part of a huge group and

    attain their individual results in various waysbecause of the appearance of the fulfillment of one goal simultaneously.

    {The soldiers fighting in a battle may have different individual occurrences connected to them only, like

    death, imprisonment, escape etc. But all of them are moved the delusion of a single goal of victory or

    defeat and make efforts to reach that fulfillment.

    {TIME IS A CONCEPTION OF THE MIND; NOT REAL}

    s ||

    It is a common knowledge that, Time alone creates blockages or opening of all events.

    O Brahmin! Time exists in the Self in the form of conception alone.

    {It is a common knowledge that Time expresses itself as seasons allowing some crops to grow at a certain

    time and blocks some crops from sprouting at other times.

    If Time exists outside controlling events of the world, then how it can be an idea in a particular mind is

    Gaadhis doubt.

    The answer is-

    Time is also an idea in the mind.

    Passing of time is conceived differently by different individuals. Happy event makes time go fast; sad event

    makes one feel the time-span to be longer.

    But united, many minds conceive of the same seasons, same directions etc observing the Suns movement

    as a common experience for all. The clock and calendar the conceptions of many individuals together-

    will be the same for all.}

    Lord Kaala (Time) is formless; he is Brahma himself; he is unborn!

    He does not remove or add anything to any one at any time.

    {Time as a conception binding the entire world is abstract; it is formless; it is part of the Creation process;

    it is Brahma himself, who rises out of the Supreme Brahman Space (AAkaasha) and is bound by time and

    space conception.

    Creator himself is the Time factor which makes the world appearance possible.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    30/47

    Time has no emotions.

    It does not block or open up anything as the common populace thinks.

    It does not favor some one and punish someone.

    Time keeps dissolving events in the mind one after the other continuously, without a break.

    Mind alone colors these events by saying some event occurred in the past; something is happening now;

    some event will occur in the future and so on.

    Time as such is division less. It is beginning less and endless.

    The sight of the sun is termed as the beginning of the day. Many countries see the Sun at different times

    and have their mornings at different times.

    The divisions and terminologies of morning, night, days, months, and years are all man-made.

    Time is just what dissolves the events without a break.}

    Time for the common populace exists in the form of year, Kalpa, Yuga etc.It (Time) is conceived through hosts of objects.

    Hosts of objects exist because of that (Time)!

    {Time is divided as year, Kalpa, Yuga etc by the common lot. The Sun, moon and stars determine the

    space, time divisions for all.

    Based on these calculations, the actions are conceived. Based on these calculations, objects are conceived.

    Then actions are defined based on those objects bound in time and space.

    Conceptions of objects, space, and time all exist together complementing each other and an event is

    experienced.

    But in reality, time and space are undivided, endless and beginning less.}

    The deluded minds together experienced the delusion simultaneously.

    That is why all the Chaandaalas and Keeras saw the king in their experience also.

    Just do what you have to do in your life andanalyze the Self through your intellect.

    O Good man! Remain here without getting deluded in the mind anymore.

    I am leaving.

    So saying, Lord Vishnu vanished from sight.

    CHAPTER SIXTEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    Gaadhi remained in the same cave thinking about all the events that happened in his life.

    After a few months he again worshipped Naaraayana through penance.

    Lord Vishnu appeared again in front of him.

    Gaadhi spoke

    Lord! Remembering my Chaandaala-life experiences,

    and the delusory nature of this worldly existence, I feel greatly confused.

    Therefore remove the great delusion in my mind by explaining the truth of everything.

    After stating the truth (do not disappear off) remain here andmake me get engaged in one single taintless action.

    Lord Vishnu spoke

    O Brahmin! This world is a great magical extravaganza!

    Because of the forgetting of the Self,all sorts of amazing events occur here!

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    32/47

    You had many experiences in the Chaandaala and Keera regions because of delusion.

    Such things are experienced by all through delusion.

    Like you, the other Chaandaalas, other Keeras also had the same delusion.

    Though it is not real, it appeared real because of the simultaneous experience.

    Listen, I will explain everything as it is, without any reason for doubt,

    so that your agitation of being a Chaandaala fades away like a creeper in winter.

    s

    This Chaandaala named Katanjaka who lived in the Chaandaala colony,

    for him, all the events occurred in the past,

    as you perceived in your delusory state.

    His wife died as you say, and he went to another country; became the king of Keeras;

    and entered the fire later on.

    For you, the very same experiences of that Chaandaala flashed in the mind,

    when you were submerged in the water.

    Sometimes what is seen and experienced gets completely forgotten!

    Sometimes the mind remembers what is not seen as if seen!

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    33/47

    {Any mind-mirror can reflect any experience stored in the Brahmas mental space and believe that to be its

    own experience. Gaadhis mind might have randomly gone through the experiences of some Chaandaala

    named Katanja!}

    Delusions occur during dreams, imaginations, and fevers caused by humor imbalance.

    The same delusions are seen Dear Gaadhi,

    even in wakeful states by the mind by itself (without any external agent).

    O Gaadhi! The events of the past and future are seen

    by the yogis who know the occurrences of all the three time modes.

    Similarly, the events in the life of Katanja were also seen!

    {What future events are seen by the Yogis are past for them; but later experienced by others.

    What events you saw as present were the past of others.}

    s

    s ||

    I am so and so this is mine that is mine-

    a realized person does not drown in such delusions.

    I am so and so this is mine that is mine-

    a non-realized person drowns in such delusions.

    A Knower of Brahman who has realized that he is the essence of all,

    does not grieve;does not see the divisions of objects (as mine and yours) and suffer through attachment.

    s ||

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    34/47

    Because of such an attitude,

    he does not drown in the events caused by delusion which end up in pain or pleasure,

    though appearing to be immersed in them,

    like the hollow gourd in the waters.

    You are still having a mind caught in the net of Vaasanaas and not aware of the Self.

    You have not reached the natural state of the Self,

    as if there is still some left over residue of a dangerous fever.

    Because your knowledge is incomplete,

    you are incapable of removing the cloud of your mental delusion,

    like a person who has not put in enough effort.

    Whatever appears on the stage of your mind any moment,

    you are getting engrossed in it like a tree by a tall man.

    Mind is the central nave of this wheel of delusion which rotates everywhere.

    If that mind is brought under control and kept like that, the wheel no more affects.

    Get up! Perform penance (control of the mind) on this hill,

    with an undisturbed mind, for ten years.

    Then you will attain the knowledge which has no end.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    35/47

    Having said these words, Lord Vishnu of lotus eyes vanished from sight, like the cloud

    thrown off by the wind; like the snuffed out light; like the wave of the Yamunaa River.

    Gaadhi soon attained dispassion through discrimination, like the tree drying up at the end

    of the autumn season.

    His mind freed of the madly moving mind he regretted the stupidity that had caused all

    the improper delusions of the past.

    For further practice of Knowledge he went to the RishyaMooka Mountain; having

    renounced all conceptions, performed penance for ten years and attained the Supreme

    Knowledge.

    After getting Self-knowledge,

    Gaadhi the great one, realizing his true essence,

    freed of fear and grief,

    established in the state of JeevanMukti,

    remaining in the Quiescent state,

    with a mind filled with unbroken bliss,

    shone forth in the Brahman-sky like the moon complete with all digits.

    CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    Joy of Raghu dynasty!Thus, the power of delusion of the Supreme,

    which is of the essence of great delusion.

    is wide-spread and unfathomable.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    36/47

    Wherefore the perception of a world

    in a delusory dream which lasted for a minute or two?

    Wherefore the delusion of being a Chaandaala king for many years?

    Wherefore, the experiences obtained through delusion?

    Wherefore the delusion getting proved by direct experience?

    Therefore, I tell you O Mighty armed Rama!

    This Maaya is always harmful.

    It pushes a man of uncontrolled mind into great sufferings.

    Rama spoke

    O Sage! How can the wheel of Maayaa be stopped,

    which is rotating very fast

    as if breaking all the limbs of a person?

    (bringing pain through the idea of divisions)

    Vasishta spoke

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    37/47

    Raaghava! Understand the mind to be the main nave of

    the rotating wheel of Maayaa in the form of this world-appearance,

    producing delusions.

    If that (nave) is held steady by the intellect through sincere effort,

    the nave stops rotating and the wheel of Maayaa stops.

    The delusion-wheel with its nave held fast will not move;

    as when the rope stops rotating, the object tied to its end also stops rotating.

    s

    O Taintless one! You are an expert in fighting where you use the wheel as a weapon!

    Dont you know that the wheel when steadied at the nave comes under control;

    not otherwise?

    Therefore hold steady the nave namely the mind with all effort, Raaghava;

    and stop your wheel of world appearance from moving.

    Except through this method, one will be get endless pains.

    If that method is perfected, instantly you will see the end of all pains.

    The disease of the great illness called Worldly Existence

    will not be cured whatever you do,

    except by the excellent medicine called Mind-Control.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    38/47

    Therefore Raaghava, discard all efforts at

    visiting holy places, giving charity, performing penance etc;

    bring the mind alone under control for attaining the Supreme good.

    The world-appearance is inside the mind like the pot-space is inside the pot.

    If the mind is destroyed, there is no world-appearance.

    If the pot is destroyed, there is no pot-space.

    For long, the pot-space called the mind is holding within,

    the ever-changing phenomenon of the world-appearance.

    Destroy it and enter the unparalleled space, which is of the nature of the Self.

    The mind becomes extinctby remaining steadily in the present with ease every moment and

    keeping the out-going mind from thinking about the past and the future.

    If every moment you carefully avoid engaging in conceiving the future,

    then you surely are in the sacred state of no-mind.

    As long as the conceptual thoughts continue,

    the delusions created by the mind will persist.

    As long as the clouds keep arising, the rain drops will continue to pour.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    39/47

    As long as the Pure Consciousness is with the mind-faculty,

    so long do the conceptions and imaginations continue.As long as even a tiny part of the Moon is there, the dew drops will keep forming.

    If the consciousness is contemplated upon bereft of the mind,

    (if one remains in the Self-state)

    then, the roots of ones own worldly existence (Vaasanaas and Karma)

    are completely burnt away without any residue (along with the ignorance),

    as in the case of the Siddhas.

    The consciousness bereft of mind is the original consciousness.

    When it remains in its original state without the mind,

    there is no taint of the conceived phenomenon.

    That Consciousness (bereft of mind) alone is the state of truth (Supremacy).

    That alone is the state of auspiciousness (matchless bliss).

    That alone is the nature of the Supreme.

    That alone reveals everything as knowledge.

    Is that not the supreme vision where the mind remains dead?

    Where the mind is,

    there the pains and pleasures always make their appearance,

    like the crows in the cremation ground.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    40/47

    By the continuous practice of

    keeping the company of knowers and study of scriptures,the unreal nature of the objects of the world is understood.

    Self alone is the main cause in the vision of the Supreme state.

    The gem fallen in a bottomless hole is seen only by using another gem

    (through reflection process).

    Self alone wants to get rid of the pains experienced by the Self.

    Therefore Self alone is said to be the main cause of Self-realization.

    CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    {REMAIN ABSORBED IN THE SELF}

    When talking, when giving off, when accepting,

    when opening the eyes, when closing the eyes,

    at all times,

    through unbroken stream of contemplation,

    remain identified with the Self alone.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    41/47

    Getting born, living on, and dying,

    engaged in actions always,

    (as your life goes on through various tragedies and festivities)

    when the taintless state of the Self is attained (by practice)

    remain stabilized in the state of pure consciousness (as the unaffected witness).

    s

    This is mine That also is mine I am so and so with a name and form and familyRenouncing all such Vaasanaas,

    through single-minded concentration,

    remain stabilized in the state of pure consciousness within.

    As long as the body appearance is there,

    have single-mindedness (unaffected by the changing time)

    in the present and the future states of life,and maintain stability of the mind

    always contemplating on the Self.

    Always remain in the contemplation of the Self,

    in all difficult situations in the states of childhood, youth and old age,

    in all pains and pleasures,

    in all the three states of waking, dream and deep-sleep.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    42/47

    Discarding the dirt of the cognized world,

    mind completely melting towards the Supreme,

    cutting off the filthy rope of desires,

    be engaged in the contemplation of the Self.

    Subduing the cholera of desires expressed as good and bad by ones own imagination,

    destroying the vision of likes and dislikes,

    be engaged in the contemplation of the essence of Self.

    Understanding that

    the doer, action and the instruments of action

    do not affect the Self but are (reflections) within;

    without agitations, without supported by a second object,

    remain engaged in the contemplation of the Self alone.

    Asleep while awake (unaffected);

    contemplating on the stable state of the Self;

    with the knowledge- I am everything;

    be of the nature of your true essence alone.

    s

    Freed of the ideas of variety (waking/dream states) and non-variety (deep-sleep);

    because of that freedom, identified with the Self which is equally in all as the essence;remaining as the light which reveals all the appearances spreading out in front of you,

    remain engaged in the contemplation of the Self alone.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    43/47

    Renouncing the ideas of myself and other,

    Without seeing any differentiation in the world phenomenon,

    holding on to the Self as to a diamond pillar

    remain stable.

    When one remains in the true nature of the Self,

    the state of non-dual bliss,

    even nectar tastes like poison

    (as it only brings a break in the blissful experience)!

    CHAPTER NINETEEN

    Vasishta spoke

    {THE KNOWER AND THE IGNORANT}

    We will seek the company of only those men who have realized the Self.

    Others are just donkeys with long arms parading as men!

    Among all these who have achieved the highest targets of life,

    like those who shine forth by their amazing actions;or those who have achieved amazing powers;

    or those who excel in physical prowess;

    or those who are great men of renowned fame-

    the Knower of the Self alone shines as the Supreme achiever.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    44/47

    Just like the Sun, fire, Moon, gems and stars shine forth giving light in this world,

    the excellent men who have known the Supreme also shine forth in this world.

    s

    Rama! Those men who have not known the Self

    are considered as the worst category of beings;

    worser than the worms crawling under the earth,

    worser than donkeys, worser than any animal species.

    As long as the embodied man does not realize the Self,

    so long will the vampire of ignorance possess him.

    The wise state that only the Knower of the Self is endowed with consciousness.

    One who does not know the Self,

    moves about chasing actions resulting in pain.

    He is a moving corpse (without conscious act).

    Only a realized man is endowed with consciousness.

    {THE OBESE MIND}

    The Self-state moves away if the mind is fattened up,

    like one is blinded by darkness by huge clouds looming above.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    45/47

    By discarding the pleasures of the senses the mind should gradually be thinned out

    by the seeker of the Self.The leaf indeed dries up in course of time by the loss of moisture.

    By identifying with the non-self; by caring for the inert body alone;

    by attachment to son, wife and other family members;

    the mind gets obese.

    By the contortions of the ego;

    becoming dirty by the playing around with mine-ness;

    through the idea of this (body) is mine (so I can enjoy pleasures);

    the mind gets obese.

    Through the pain of old age and death;

    wastefully growing more and more;

    holding the serpent of faults within like a snake-hole;

    the mind gets obese.

    By suffering through mental and physical afflictions

    trusting the world appearance (to be pleasing);

    trying to seek and avoid things;

    the mind gets obese.

  • 7/29/2019 YogaVasishta Upashama Prakaranam Part 5

    46/47

    Through attachments, through greed for wealth;

    through acquiring jewels and women;

    by enjoying the momentary pleasures;

    the mind gets obese.

    By drinking the milk of wicked desires;

    through the strength of the wind of pleasures filling up;

    by wandering about fulfilling desires;

    the mind gets obese.

    With the nature of rising and subsiding (transitory enjoyments)

    burning and fainting as if by poison consumption

    (because of disappointments and sufferings),

    by going after countless pleasures (insatiable wants),

    the mind gets obese.

    {REMAIN AS A JEEVANMUKTA}

    s

    Making the mind taintless (all wants destroyed),

    being freed of doubts,

    with the mind completely subdued within,

    seeing with ease everything up to the body- appearance worthless as a piece of grass,

    drink; wander; enjoy;

    having crossed over to the other end of Samsaara!
