Erbil Citadel

Erbil

Hawler City (Erbil) is the oldest living city in the world, the capitalof the Federal Kurdistan Region and about 350 km2 north ofBaghdad . It lies on a rich fertile plain between two rivers, theGreater Zab and the Lesser Zab.

Already in the 23rd century BC, the location was an importantcrossroads between East and West. Assyrians, Persians,Ottomans, and Arabs have all ruled he area at some point in time.

The Citadel in Erbil has been occupied for 5,000 years as a fortress and inner city, and has alwaysbeen an important trading post and multicultural melting pot. It is currently restored with the help ofUnesco, and will become an open air museum.

The Citadel rises 28-32 m above the surrounding city, and overlooks the wheatelds, which extendall the way to the Greater Zab River 30 km tothe west.The area of the Citadel is over ten hectares; the population is about 5400, only a fth of whom aredescendents of original families.

There are just over 800 dwellings; most of them are courtyard houses with brick walls and mud roofson timber joists,one-or-two storeys high, some of them have basements. About halfof the houses areprivately owned and the rest belong to the localand central governments. There are two mosquesand one public baths.
