    INTRODUCTION:y T

he founding stones for the Blu Ray Disc technologywere laid in 2002 by the Blu Ray Disc Association(BDA) in an attempt to overcome the drawbacks inDVD's.

y This paper essentially is confined with the structuresize, storage& advantages of the Blu-RayDisc. To beeffective, at every stage the disc is compared with DVD

SIZE :y Blu-rayDisc (official abbreviationBD) is an optical

disc storage medium designed to supersede the DVD

    format.T

he format defines as its standard physicalmedia a 12 cm (same as DVDs and CDs), 25 GB per-layer optical disc, with dual layer discs (50 GB) thenorm for feature-length video discs and additionallayers possible later.

STORAGE: It should be noticed that whatever form ofthe disc may be under consideration thedata on the disc is stored on a SPIRALTRACK running from the centre of the discto the end of the diameter of the disc.

On this spiral tracks exists the BUMPSwhichactually hold the data.

These bumps are often called pits. Viewed from the top of the disc these

    bumps look like PITS.

    DATA ACCESS:

From the figure above we can conclude that with the reduction in the laser beam

wavelength accompanied with an effective (proportional) increase in the lens

aperture, it is possible to read & write data into the pits of very small size. This

way more disc space can be provided on a BD.

    BLU RAY DISC WRITER:

PROS:y () High disc space at almost same cost price

    y () Security

y () reverse compatibilityy () high speed data transfer (36Mbps)

    y () online modifications

CONS:y () High cost of the disc reader

y () less data space than AOD (HD-DVD 30 Giga bytes)

    SUPPORTS:

    SONY PLAY STATIONSAMSUNG PLAYER

The rapid strides and the success level of BD is contributed bymajor organizations such as SONY , WARNER BROTHRS & many

others that have joined the BDA (Blu Ray Disc Association) in

bringing it into the market such that it satisfies all the needs of the

    users.

CONCLUSION:y It would definitely take a considerable time for the

Blu-Ray disc to hit the market & completely takeovers

the DVD share hold.y Because of the low level compatibility

y . Anyways soon or later this mass storage optical deviceis going to replace the DVD & let the user experience a

world high quality & disc space (Quality & Quantityensured) with high level of security and privacyensured.
